The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Carboxylation On Picking Resistance - A Study Of Carboxylated Latexes, Jackie K. Cody Apr 1985

The Effect Of Varying Degrees Of Carboxylation On Picking Resistance - A Study Of Carboxylated Latexes, Jackie K. Cody

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A carboxylated latex is formed by substituting carboxylic acid groups onto styrene/butadiene latex particles, thus displacing the emulsifying agent to a certain degree. This will lead to a more stable system with increased binding power for use in coating systems. The purpose of this study was to determine how variations in the degree of carboxylation affect the IGT picking resistance of a coated sheet.

The experiment consisted of making nine different coating formulations with both latex addition level and degree of carboxylation being varied. These formulations were applied to a paper substrate by the use of the Keagan coater. Testing …

Moving Into Literacy: Then And Now, Maryanne Hall Apr 1985

Moving Into Literacy: Then And Now, Maryanne Hall

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

How children learn to read has intrigued parents, teachers, and psychologists as well as reading authorities and researchers for many years. The question of when children should learn to read has been debated extensively since the 1930s. The attention to this question may have resulted in a lack of acknowledgement that learning to be literate begins long before the formal introduction to reading in a school setting. In this article prereading and beginning reading are examined from both a historical and a current perspective with emphasis on implications of recent findings on children's literacy learning for instruction.

The Impeachment And Trial Of Secretary Of War William Worth Belknap, Duane Edward Holthof Apr 1985

The Impeachment And Trial Of Secretary Of War William Worth Belknap, Duane Edward Holthof

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of the events which lead to the resignation of Secretary of War William Worth Belknap in 1876, to examine the circumstances surrounding his impeachment, and to study the testimony in his Senate trial.

Although Belknap was not convicted on charges of accepting bribes, most of those senators who voted to acquit him did so on the technical ground that the Senate lacked the jurisdiction to try a private citizen. The evidence in the case clearly indicated Belknap's involvement, and there seems little doubt that if Belknap did not know what …
