The Effects Of Audiotape Self-Monitoring On Direct Instruction Teacher Presentation Techniques, Kay D. Simon Brynildson
The Effects Of Audiotape Self-Monitoring On Direct Instruction Teacher Presentation Techniques, Kay D. Simon Brynildson
Masters Theses
Prior research has shown that several Direct Instruction teacher presentation techniques are functionally related to student academic achievement. Unfortunately, variability exists in the implementation of Direct Instruction programs with regard to these critical teaching skills. Monitoring of Direct Instruction teachers appears necessary to ensure program effectiveness. The present study employed a multiple baseline across subjects experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of audiotape self-monitoring in improving and maintaining five Direct Instruction teacher presentation techniques: clear signalling, pacing, corrections, contingent reinforcement and student accuracy. The subjects were two middle school special education teachers who taught Direct Instruction corrective reading programs. Both …

The Last World Emperor And The Angelic Pope: Eschatological Figures As Representative Of The Medieval Struggle Of “Sacerdotium" And “Imperium”, Christopher Joseph Beiting
Masters Theses
In adopting the Christian faith, medieval people also obtained a tradition within Christianity, that of esehatology. Because of this tradition, there was a receptiveness among some for prophetic visions of the future, visions of widely varied nature. Two very popular themes running through this visionary tradition involved two eschatological figures, the Last World Emperor and the Angelic Pope, whose advent would right all wrongs and transform medieval society. This thesis will examine elements of medieval political theory as they developed out of contemporary events. It will also trace the growth and development of the figures of the Last World Emperor …

Improving Active Treatment Through Performance Management, Carman E. Stark
Masters Theses
The primary purpose of this project was to evaluate a performance management program using a goal setting and feedback system implemented by unit supervisors in a large psychiatric hospital. The focus of the research study was to improve active treatment for mental health patients by increasing levels of staff-patient interaction. Behaviors o f self-recording by staff and instructions and goal setting by the unit supervisor were targeted. Feedback was provided by the unit supervisor in the form of publicly posted graphs indicating percent of completed assigned activities. The four phases used in the data summary include: (1) baseline, (2) goal …
Progressive Muscle Relaxation As An Adjunctive Treatment For Moderate Asthmatics, Kellye Hutton Slaggert
Progressive Muscle Relaxation As An Adjunctive Treatment For Moderate Asthmatics, Kellye Hutton Slaggert
Masters Theses
This study examined the effects of parent assisted progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) training on moderate asthmatics. Three children between the ages of 7 and 12 participated in the study. After 3 weeks of PMR training and daily practice, the parents became involved in prompting their children to use PMR when an attack appeared likely.
The findings from this study suggest that parental prompting of PMR was instrumental in decreasing the frequency of attacks, increasing peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) values, and decreasing the severity of attacks for 2 of the 3 subjects. The long term implications for using PMR as …
Robert Grosseteste's De Ubero Arbitrio, Andrew L. Pearson
Robert Grosseteste's De Ubero Arbitrio, Andrew L. Pearson
Masters Theses
De Libero Arbitrio of Robert Grosseteste (ca. 1170-1253) represents his primary exploration of that aspect of man's relationship to nature, to other human beings, and to God, known as free choice. This thesis explores the relationship of his treatise De Libero Arbitrio to his treatises De Veritate, De Veritate Propositionis, and De Scientia Dei. It also offers an outline and summary of De Libero Arbitrio and presents an English translation of Ludwig Baur's edition of the first recension of this treatise with updated notes.

Of Berry Pickers, Shanty Boys, And The Jack Pine Bird: Patterns Of Settlement And Subsistence In Nineteenth Century Oscoda County, Rose Lockwood Moore
Masters Theses
The provisions of the Homestead Act of 1863 (U.S. Congress 1862a) required a settlement pattern of dispersed single families on small tracts of land, which, in turn, affected the subsistence strategies available to the homesteaders. The interaction of federal land legislation with the ecosystem of southern Oscoda County resulted in marked spatial and temporal differences between the tracts that were homesteaded as opposed to those acquired for their timber. A sample population of quarter sections was analyzed in terms of the physical and biotic environments, date of entry, and use. The analysis confirmed that the timber lands were located on …

Comparing Recreational Reading Levels With Reading Levels From An Informal Reading Inventory, Lawrence L. Smith, C. Rosanne Joyner
Comparing Recreational Reading Levels With Reading Levels From An Informal Reading Inventory, Lawrence L. Smith, C. Rosanne Joyner
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
When children pull a book off the library shelf for recreational reading, what are they considering -length? ... jacket appeal? ... difficulty level? ... relation to their experiential background? All of these probably enter into consideration when the selection is made. The determining factor, however, for a freely chosen book, is quite likely to be the interest level of that selection for a particular child (Breen, 1967). Teachers acknowledge the importance of a motivating interest when they teach a directed reading lesson or prepare a child for an Informal Reading Inventory selection. Advocates of individualized reading programs have long stressed …
Reading Fluency And The Novice Reader, Beverly B. Swanson
Reading Fluency And The Novice Reader, Beverly B. Swanson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Recent research into the reading process has identified factors other than efficiency in word recognition which account for reading fluency. The automatization of decoding skills exhibited by better readers has been attributed to, among other things, opportunities. Olshavsky (1977), for example, found that poor readers used the same range of strategies as good readers, but had less opportunity to practice and develop them.

Effects Of A Secondary Reading Methods Course On Students' Attitudes Toward Teaching Content Reading, Bruce A. Lloyd
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
It takes a lifetime for individuals to master the reading process, and high school teachers play an important role. Moreover, high school teachers, who are subject matter specialists, are the best persons to teach students the reading skills unique to the various content areas (Shepherd, 1984). Many secondary teachers are aware of this opportunity and responsibility; others are not, so efforts are underway to help them believe in the need for teaching reading skills in their special subjects (Lloyd, 1986; Roe, Stoodt and Burns, 1987).

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
How do magazines and newspapers inspire students to write? They are timely, familiar, readily available, imaginative, and touch their lives in personal ways. Advertising in particular fires students' imaginations. Students can be encouraged to write by responding to a wide variety of familiar images having high visual and verbal impact and appeal. In addition to the advertisements, illustrations and photographs enhance comprehension and help students formulate mental imagery for written descriptions.
Assessment: Stopping The Revolving Door At Rock Valley Community College, Richard L. Bernardi, K. Sue Castleberry
Assessment: Stopping The Revolving Door At Rock Valley Community College, Richard L. Bernardi, K. Sue Castleberry
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The concept of an open door for anyone who wants to attend a community college regardless of that person's educational background is an admirable one. The reality, however, is that the open door too often becomes a revolving door. Students from ages eighteen to eighty choose to attend community colleges for a multitude of reasons. These students often have the proper motivation, but they frequently face failure because they lack the requisite basic skills to succeed. At Rock Valley College, the decision was made to stop the revolving door.

Testing: We Need A New Perspective, W. John Harker
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In their recent study of reading assessment, Farr and Carey (1986) observe that over the past several years "testing programs ... have exploded on the educational scene" (p. 6). Those familiar with reading instruction and the assessment of children's reading development must agree. Testing programs at the district, state, and national levels have proliferated recently as more and more pressure is brought to bear on teachers to demonstrate in some quantifiable fashion their success (or lack of it) in teaching children to read.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Several years ago Bertram Bruce, in a response to P. David Pearson's description of the "Comprehension Revolution," suggested that future studies will go beyond a focus on reading comprehension to a concern for the relationships between comprehension and more general thinking skills (1985). Bruce's comments were written early in what might be called a "Thinking Skills Revolution," and - given the manner in which this revolution has matured in recent years - they seem even more relevant today.

The importance of addressing the needs of at-risk readers in demonstrably sound ways was the theme of a number of presentations at AERA's annual meeting. In one session, Rita M. Bean, of the University of Pittsburgh, presented the report of a study in which she and her colleagues investigated in-class and pullout settings for remedial instruction.

The Relationship Between Private And Commercial Vehicle Driver Records And Accidents In Michigan, Robert E. Maki
The Relationship Between Private And Commercial Vehicle Driver Records And Accidents In Michigan, Robert E. Maki
Dissertations
The primary objective of this study was to determine whether previous accidents and citations are reliable predictors of future tractor-trailer heavy truck accidents in Michigan. In addition, the background material on accident trends shows how heavy truck safety policy was formed at the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Historically, accident prediction models have been able to explain only small portions of the accident experience. More recent studies have tended to show that previous citation and accident experience were good predictors of commercial vehicle accidents. Most studies have suffered from an admitted lack of exposure data and incomplete accident statistics.

A Study Management Course For High-Risk Black College Freshmen, Mark Andrew Jackson
A Study Management Course For High-Risk Black College Freshmen, Mark Andrew Jackson
Dissertations
Attrition of high-risk, black college students has been a perpetual problem faced by colleges and universities. The importance of not only attending college, but actually receiving a degree has substantially greater cultural, educational, societal, and financial implications for black people than for whites. Also, because of shifting demographics, the relatively high attrition rates of black students will have an even greater impact on colleges and universities in upcoming years.
A review of the literature indicates that the origins of this problem are most directly related to academic deficiencies, poor motivation, and inadequate time management and self-management. While there exist numerous …
