Solitary Aerobic Exercise As A Treatment Of Unipolar Depressive Disorders In Women, Lisa Ann Romano-Neal
Solitary Aerobic Exercise As A Treatment Of Unipolar Depressive Disorders In Women, Lisa Ann Romano-Neal
Masters Theses
The effects of solitary aerobic exercise on depressive symptoms were tested on four women diagnosed with unipolar depressive disorders. A multiple baseline design was employed. The subjects individually participated in uniform one hour aerobic workouts three times a week for five to eight weeks. Heart rate measures were monitored through the utilization of the physical working capacity test with the Monark 818E Professional Ergometer. Predicted volume oxygen uptake (VO2 max) measures at post-treatment did not increase in two of the four subjects when compared to pre-treatment VO2 max measures. The mean percentage of depressed adjectives endorsed showed minimal reductions on …

Dissertations
Demand and supply of certified special education substitute teachers in the Middle Cities Education Association in Michigan was examined to determine the difference between supply and demand and to describe the factors that attract these teachers to substitute teach in the public schools.
A four-item letter of inquiry was used to acquire information from the membership of the Middle Cities Education Association in regards to supply and demand. Twenty-eight usable returns were received for a 100% response rate.
Questionnaires were distributed to certified special education substitute teachers in 19 school districts. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. Seventeen items related …
How Voluntary Agency Networks Fared In The 1980s, Margaret Gibelman, Harold W. Demone Jr.
How Voluntary Agency Networks Fared In The 1980s, Margaret Gibelman, Harold W. Demone Jr.
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Believing that the least government is the best government, the Reagan Administration favored, in both principle and practice, the transfer of functions to and fiscal independence of the private sector. This article provides a comparative analysis of the financial status of three major types of voluntary agency networks before and near the end of the Reagan era. Focusing on national voluntary health, child welfare league, and family service agencies, proportionate and absolute revenues, sources of income, and new income generating strategies are examined within the context of philanthropic trends and the compensatory role of state and local governments.
These agency …
Differential Perception And Adolescent Drinking In The United States: Preliminary Considerations, John B. Harms, James L. Wolk
Differential Perception And Adolescent Drinking In The United States: Preliminary Considerations, John B. Harms, James L. Wolk
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper addresses adolescent drinking from a perspective very similar to Sutherland's differential association theory. Drinking occurs when positive perceptions of drinking outweigh or outnumber negative ones. Our research focuses on images of drinking communicated by rationalized sources organized specifically to shape perceptions of drinking. We call these organizations "agencies" and assess their impact on perceptions of drinking. It is our contention that the political economic context of the United States in which these agencies function is such that positive images of drinking outnumber and outweigh negative ones, and that this is an important factor contributing to adolescent drinking.

Exchange Rules In The Mediation Of Social Welfare Work, Paula L. Dressel, Michelle Waters, Mike Sweat, Obie Clayton
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article demonstrates the utility of the concept of exchange rules for understanding welfare worker agency in the mediation of workplace ideologies and behaviors. The exchange rules of complementarity, reciprocity, and beneficence are applied to the issues of service worker burnout, worker-client interactions, and labor issues to illustrate their conceptual and practical power. This analysis from an interactionist perspective complements the macro-level observations of the fundamental contradictions within the social welfare enterprise. It also suggests avenues for the mediation and alleviation of certain workplace dilemmas.
Testing The Underclass Concept By Surveying Attitudes And Behavior, Kathleen J. Pottick
Testing The Underclass Concept By Surveying Attitudes And Behavior, Kathleen J. Pottick
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Recent interest in the problems of an underclass has highlighted deficiencies in the conceptual understanding of the term and empirical investigation into its dynamics. This research note describes the current definition of the concept and presents recent empirical tests of it. By presenting available survey data sets that can identify underclass attitudes, values and behavior, the note refines the deliberations on measurement. Two underclass groups, welfare recipients and criminals, are used to illustrate the methodology

Education Research Will Not Profit From Radical Constructivism, William W. Cobern
Education Research Will Not Profit From Radical Constructivism, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
There are moments when philosophy captures the educator's attention. Such an occasion was the opening night of the 1990 annual meeting of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. Ernst von Glasersfeld gave a highly stimulating lecture on "radical constructivism." Radical constructivism is an epistemological philosophy that divorces knowing from any notion that reality is the referent of knowledge. Radical constructivists argue that adopting this view, rather than realist views, will help teachers improve science instruction. This, however, would mean a dramatic shift away from critical realism which has deep historical roots in Western thought, and which arguably was …

The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink
The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink
Honors Theses
For a number of years, differences have existed in the training of music therapists. In some countries, music therapists are trained first and foremost as musicians, and secondly as therapists. Other countries allow music therapy to be practiced by music psychologists, physicians, or educators. Both sides employ varying arguments. Bunt (1988) feels that therapists are either experienced musicians with minimal training in developmental, therapeutic skills, or experienced clinicians lacking in many areas of musical expertise. Bunt further delineates between the two schools of thought by describing how one music therapist may use improvisation to interact with a client and his …

Using Predictable Songs In Beginning Reading Activities, Sandra L. Renegar
Using Predictable Songs In Beginning Reading Activities, Sandra L. Renegar
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
One of the universal languages of humankind is music, a source of rhythms for toe-tapping, melodies for humming, and lyrics for remembering. Like nursery rhymes, many simple songs contain repetitive and/or predictable language which can serve as a means for teaching sight vocabulary to beginning readers (Bridge, Winograd, and Haley, 1983). Predictable text is characterized by the repetitive pattern of the author and concepts familiar to children (Rhodes, 1981). This repetition may be evident in the rhyme and rhythm of the language and/or the cumulative pattern in stories or songs. By introducing beginning reading vocabulary through music, the children's psychological …

The study of how children learn has moved from examining the accumulation of isolated pieces of knowledge to the current research position that it is appropriate to study children's acquisition of complex subject matter and development of learning strategies. Resnick and Klopfer (1989) believe that "[k]nowledge is acquired not from information communicated and memorized but from information that students elaborate, question, and use." As researchers become concerned with how students develop and utilize learning strategies, Resnick (Brandt, 1989) warns that "strategies will not be effective unless there is also attention to self-monitoring and motivation."

It may be argued that a field only comes of age when its professional membership is able to gain insight into the present and begin to predict the future through the organized studying and the collective valuing of the field's past. As we enter the 1990's, it is time for the field of college reading and learning assistance to achieve a broader perspective that more fully incorporates the field's rich and varied past. To achieve this end, collectively we should endeavor to understand our professional roots through chronicling, interpreting, and evaluating the fundamental ideas, the pedagogical achievements, and the research …

Lessons From A French Class On Becoming Literate: A Personal Reflection, Beth Weir
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Recently I set myself the task of learning the French language. I knew the undertaking would be fraught with frustration. I did not know it would provide me with insights into the demands made upon the child who is learning to read and write. Neither did I know it would so soundly reaffirm my belief in the whole language approach to literacy instruction.

Among the presentations at the annual convention of the International Reading Association, held in Atlanta in May, was a session titled "Teachers, Students, and Literacy Instruction: Profiles in Learning." The two session leaders, Robert B. Ruddell, from the University of California at Berkeley, and Martha Rapp-Haggard Ruddell, from Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, discussed their research, which has focused on two aspects of instruction: the characteristics of influential teachers, and the manner in which skillful and less skilled teachers employ ambiguity in their teaching.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
People in the United States have not melted into one homogeneous group. Ethnic groups have retained customs, language, and beliefs. Some have referred to this special diversity as the "tossed salad" effect. Diversity in our population is likely to remain. In 1987, immigrants from 48 different countries arrived on U.S. shores. Our country's Hispanic population increased 30 percent in the last decade. More than 37 million Americans have disabilities and the majority of disabled children spend a good part of their day in regular classes. As educators, we find many representatives of this diverse population in our classrooms. We have …
