Micellar Catalysis Of Hydrolysis Of Substituted Hydroxamic Acids With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Zhongyuan He Aug 1991

Micellar Catalysis Of Hydrolysis Of Substituted Hydroxamic Acids With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Zhongyuan He

Masters Theses

The work demonstrated the effects of differently located and substituted phenyl groups, as well as aliphatic groups in the hydroxamic acids, on micellar catalysis with perfluorooctanoic acid as the reactive counterion surfactant in aqueous acetonitrile solution.

Kinetic rate constant-surfactant concentration profiles for the decano-, 2,5-dimethylphenylaceto-, 4-isopropylphenylaceto-, 4-phenylbutano-, and 6-phenyl-hexanohydroxamic acids were examined and analysis on the data obtained were reported.

The pseudo-phase ion exchange (PPIE) model has been satisfactorily applied to explain the observed micellar effects.

Further investigation into more appropriately substituted hydroxamic acids is suggested in order to obtain a more complete set of data and further evaluation.

Computer Aided Process Planning System For Generating Alternative Process Plans, Rao T. Gali Aug 1991

Computer Aided Process Planning System For Generating Alternative Process Plans, Rao T. Gali

Masters Theses

Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) has a key role in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) as an interface between design and manufacturing. Current CAPP systems treat process planning as a static function, and always generate the same machine and process combinations. Thus, these CAPP systems are inadequate for advanced manufacturing facilities such as Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). This thesis presents research conducted for the design and development of a CAPP system called Alternative Computer Aided Process Planning (A-CAPP) which generates alternative process plans by interacting with production planning and machine loading functions to satisfy system capacity constraints.

A-CAPP is a variant …

Temporal Contiguity As A Defining Feature Of The Terms Reinforcer And Discriminative Stimulus: A Survey Of Journal Editorial Staffs, Julie Ann Fillhard Aug 1991

Temporal Contiguity As A Defining Feature Of The Terms Reinforcer And Discriminative Stimulus: A Survey Of Journal Editorial Staffs, Julie Ann Fillhard

Masters Theses

Behavior analysis is a science that requires a consistent set of terms to describe independent and dependent variables and the relations between them. However, a review of literature indicates that behavior analysis is plagued by terminological inconsistencies, even with such basic terms as reinforcer and discriminative stimulus.

In the present study, 193 journal editorial staff members were surveyed to determine the importance of temporal contiguity in defining the terms reinforcer and discriminative stimulus. Eighty-seven editors (45%) responded to the survey which described two hypothetical scenarios and contained a series of questions relevant to each.

The results of the study indicate …

Cocaine And Timing: Drug Effects Under A Mixed Fixed-Interval Extinction Schedule, Vincent O. Hodge Aug 1991

Cocaine And Timing: Drug Effects Under A Mixed Fixed-Interval Extinction Schedule, Vincent O. Hodge

Masters Theses

The effects of cocaine hydrochloride (3.2-56.2 mg/kg) were determined in rats performing under a mixed fixed-interval 60-seconds extinction 120-seconds schedule of food delivery. Responses were recorded in successive 5-second bins. With the exception of the highest dose (56.2 mg/kg), cocaine did not significantly affect rate of responding under the fixed-interval component or extinction component, or the time of peak responding under the extinction component. The highest dose significantly reduced response rates and shifted the time of peak responding leftward to quicker and earlier moments. Results are discussed in terms of possible rate- and time-dependent effects of stimulant drugs.

Nonidentity Matching Training As A Supplement To The Audio-Visual Combination Test, Melissa Wilson Aug 1991

Nonidentity Matching Training As A Supplement To The Audio-Visual Combination Test, Melissa Wilson

Masters Theses

The Audio-Visual Combination Test is an assessment tool developed by Kerr, Meyerson, and Flora (1977), and used by those working with developmentally disabled persons to assess learning-to-learn skills. The test measures motor, visual, and auditory discrimination learning.

The experimenter attempted to determine if there were an important step-visual nonidentity discrimination-between AVC subtests 4 and 5/6 of the test. Twelve developmentally disabled adults were tested with three different sets of tasks interposed between a revised subtest 4 and 5/6. Results showed that most subjects had greater difficulty with the visual nonidentity discrimination than with the auditory/visual discrimination, subtest 5/6. The results …

King Bela Before The Mongol Invasion (1214-1241), Pongracz Sennyey

Masters Theses

This is a study of the political history of Hungary in the first part of the thirteenth century. Special attention is given to the political role played by King Bela from 1214 until the Mongol invasion of 1241. The focus of the first part of the study is the relationship between King Bela and his father King Andrew II. In the second half of the study, the focus shifts to the policies pursued by King Bela once he became the sole ruler of the kingdom.

The study sheds light on the reasons for the Hungarian defeat by the Mongol armies …

Denominational Rituals As Influencers Of Grief Adjustment, Suzanne Jean Martz Webb Aug 1991

Denominational Rituals As Influencers Of Grief Adjustment, Suzanne Jean Martz Webb

Dissertations

This study identified rituals and traditions that are used by some mainline Christian denominations for grieving parishioners. Determining if there are differences between denominations in either the adjustment widows make during grief or the funeral rituals in which they participated at the death of their husbands was the initial research question. The second research question was whether the degree of ritual used by members of denominations impacts adjustment during grief.

Three denominations of Christianity--the Roman Catholic church, the United Methodist church, and the Reformed Church in America--were chosen to study this issue. The three have some of the same informal …

Reading In Families: A Research Update, Linda Asmussen, Janet S. Gaffney Jun 1991

Reading In Families: A Research Update, Linda Asmussen, Janet S. Gaffney

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Asmussen and Gaffney have uncovered one of the many rich sources of research data inherent in the Read ing Recovery program. The Ohio research studies (already some 13 volumes) have documented the success of Reading Recovery in the United States. Success like this produces a need to unravel the warp and woof to examine the nature of that success. Certainly there are many threads to examine. In this brief research update, they describe a current study to explore reading in the families of a sample of Reading Recovery children in Illinois. It will be interesting to compare their findings with …

Effectiveness Of Aluminum Sulfate And Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid As Carbohydrate Protectors During Oxygen Delignification, Joey L. Klinge Jun 1991

Effectiveness Of Aluminum Sulfate And Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid As Carbohydrate Protectors During Oxygen Delignification, Joey L. Klinge

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Objective

The purpose of this thesis will be to examine three carbohydrate protector's effectiveness during oxygen delignification. Today, about half of the lignin can be removed from a conventional kraft pulp through the application of oxygen delignification as an initial stage in the bleaching process. More extensive delignification results in the degradation of pulp carbohydrates, influencing the final pulp qualities.1 Carbohydrates are attacked by the decomposition of hydroperoxides catalyzed by heavy metal ions, free radicals. Carbohydrate protectors function to deactivate the free radicals, reducing the rate of attack on the carbohydrates.2 This thesis is based on the above …

Steam-Explosion Of Wastepaper As A Pulping Process, Edward G. Schmitt Iii Jun 1991

Steam-Explosion Of Wastepaper As A Pulping Process, Edward G. Schmitt Iii

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Recycling is a major concern in the nineties, and therefore wastepaper recycling is also in the spotlight. This concern has made it necessary to explore new ways to handle wastepaper. Steam-explosion is a possible pulping process that has the capabilities of handling grades that previously have not been used.

The effects of steam-explosion on 100% laser and Xerox printed paper were studied and the resulting optical properties determined. Chemical addition, residence time, pressure, and dispersant level were varied in the steam-explosion trials. A Morton Slush Maker was used to simulate conventional hydra-pulping for comparison with the steam-explosion pulp.

Steam-explosion removes …

Why Is An Inservice Programme For Reading Recovery Teachers Necessary?, Marie M. Clay Jun 1991

Why Is An Inservice Programme For Reading Recovery Teachers Necessary?, Marie M. Clay

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The Reading Recovery program was developed in New Zealand to answer the question how can an education system provide a second chance for young children who have not re sponded to the literacy programme in their first year of instruc tion at school? (It is not a program for teaching beginning reading to 80-90% of school children.) There are four aspects to the program: 1) the teaching of children, 2) the training of teachers, 3) the training of teacher leaders, and 4) implement ing the program in an education system and coordinating the long-term prevention strategy. Teachers help children from …

As We See It; Classroom Teachers View Reading Recovery, Jennifer Hamill, Cynthia Kelly, Jeanne M. Jacobson Jun 1991

As We See It; Classroom Teachers View Reading Recovery, Jennifer Hamill, Cynthia Kelly, Jeanne M. Jacobson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This is the second article in this special issue not written by Reading Recovery trained teachers. Hamill and Kelly are first grade teachers in one of the 26 participating schools in the first year of Reading Recovery implementation in Michigan. In response to questions by the editor of Reading Horizons, they explain the program — its impact on the Reading Recovery children and on their classroom teaching.

Clearly the concerted work of the Reading Recovery teacher-in-training and these teachers demonstrates that the Reading Recovery program is an intervention in the education system, as well as a program for children.

Hypothesizing About Reading Recovery, Michael F. Opitz Jun 1991

Hypothesizing About Reading Recovery, Michael F. Opitz

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Professor Opitz's article is one of two in this special issue not written by a Reading Recovery trained teacher. The author has examined the literature on Reading Recovery and attempted to puzzle out the reason(s) for its success. Trained Reading Recovery teachers will find both points of agreement and disagreement, and many points on which to establish a discussion. Opitz writes, "...we do not, I believe, know why the program works." Yet as Clay suggests in this issue, answers are learned in the year-long and continuing contact training sessions. Our understanding of why the program works does not come from …

Reading Recovery: A Viable Prevention Of Learning Disability, Carol A. Lyons Jun 1991

Reading Recovery: A Viable Prevention Of Learning Disability, Carol A. Lyons

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Mrs. Wishy Washy, one of the most popular charac ters of the little books used in Reading Recovery, sets a Herculean task for herself — to keep the barnyard ani mals clean. Professor Lyons, too, has taken on a big job — to convince the educational establishment that there must be a better way to cope with the increasing number of children classified as learning disabled. Suggesting that Reading Recovery can be that first net for avoiding the mislabeling of young children as "at-risk" learners, she provides a detailed case study of Mike, once labeled LD. The detailed description of …

Helping To Learn: Components And Principles Of Reading Recovery Training, Noel K. Jones Jun 1991

Helping To Learn: Components And Principles Of Reading Recovery Training, Noel K. Jones

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Professor Jones, completing his training at The Ohio State University as a Reading Recovery teacher trainer, reflects on the dynamics of Reading Recovery training at the many levels of the program: teacher training, teacher leader training, and the program for university trainers. Jones identifies a set of unifying activities that underlie the training of Reading Recovery personnel at all three training levels. He zeroes in on "the public teaching" be hind the glass and characterizes it "as a powerful force toward individual self-improvement." He also explores the tension created because of watching the lesson and attending to the discussion, a …

A Representation Of Chemical Reactions By Labeled Graphs, Héctor Hevia Jun 1991

A Representation Of Chemical Reactions By Labeled Graphs, Héctor Hevia

Dissertations

Graphs can be used to represent the atomic structure of chemical compounds where the vertices of the graph represent the individual atoms and the edges of the graph represent the valence bonds between a pair of atoms. M. A. Johnson (1991) introduced a graph-theoretic way to represent structural changes in chemical compounds. Thus, certain labelings of graphs called transitional labelings can be thought as representing chemical equations. Associated with these labelings, we introduce a new invariant of a graph G called the transitional value of G. The transitional value of a graph G gives an indication of how dramatic a …

Developing Language Through A Musical Program And Its Effect On The Reading Achievement Of Spanish Speaking Migrant Children, Dora Dominguez Jun 1991

Developing Language Through A Musical Program And Its Effect On The Reading Achievement Of Spanish Speaking Migrant Children, Dora Dominguez

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a language development program that uses music as a medium of instruction on the reading achievement of Spanish speaking migrant children. Fifty-one preschool aged subjects from a Title I (Michigan Department of Education, 1987) Summer Migrant Education Program participated in the study.

The subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups. They were provided oral language instruction to help them acquire the language of the basal readers. In other words, the vocabulary and language patterns found in a basal reading program were built into the daily language lessons. In the …
