A Study Of Aquifer Sensitivity And Vulnerability In Kalamazoo County, Michigan Based On Hydrogeologic And Agricultural Factors, Steven Douglas Chidester Dec 1993

A Study Of Aquifer Sensitivity And Vulnerability In Kalamazoo County, Michigan Based On Hydrogeologic And Agricultural Factors, Steven Douglas Chidester

Masters Theses

Groundwater in Kalamazoo County, Michigan has been impacted by human activities. This study presents a statistical method for predicting aquifer sensitivity/vulnerability within a glacio-hydrogeologic system.

Computerized data including 3620 water well records with partial chemical analyses, soil surveys, land use maps, and hydrogeologic reports were used to quantify aquifer parameters, nitrate-N contaminant concentrations, soil factors, and agricultural practices. Statistical analyses included simple t-tests , correlation, ANOV A, and multiple regression analyses.

The results indicate that there are statistically significant relationships between nitrate-N concentrations and depth of well submergence, well depth, clay thickness, partial clay thickness, land use, and soil slope. …

Development Of A Systematic Approach To The Implementation Of A Computer Integrated Manufacturing (Cim) For Small To Medium Sized Companies, G. Steven Trimmer

Masters Theses

CIM technology is rapidly becoming an essential part of businesses of all types and sizes. The impact on the culture of the enterprise is possibly of even greater complexity. Most existing implementations have been done by large businesses large teams of specialized talent.

The unique scope of this work is to simplify the implementation of CIM for small companies. The basic research derived from the WMU/IBM CIM Management Center, a fully functioning CIM facility that provides hands on experience to students and regional businesses.

The cultural references concerning CIM are derived from reading and personal experiences with industry while setting …

The Effect Of Viscosity In Beveled Blade Coating, Salih Cebe Dec 1993

The Effect Of Viscosity In Beveled Blade Coating, Salih Cebe

Masters Theses

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of several types of coating viscosity on coat weight development during the beveled blade coating process. In this study, the effects of several types of coating viscosity were experimentally investigated at the applicator roll, before and underneath the blade. Coating color viscosities were changed through two methods. The first method involved changing the temperature of coating color at constant carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) concentration, while the second method consisted of varying the CMC concentration in coating formula at constant coating temperature.

Coating viscosity had an influencing effect both on the amount of …

Neighborhood-Based Initiative To Address Poverty: Lessons From Experience, Robert Halpern Dec 1993

Neighborhood-Based Initiative To Address Poverty: Lessons From Experience, Robert Halpern

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The neighborhood has long been an important locus for efforts to address the causes and consequences of poverty in American society. Over the course of the past century neighborhood- based initiatives have been called on to reduce class conflict, counter feelings of alienation, localize control of social institutions, create jobs and reverse neighborhood economic decline, improve human services, and address a variety of specific poverty-related problems, ranging from infant mortality to juvenile delinquency. In this essay I draw on the historical experience with neighborhood initiative to illuminate its strengths and limitations as a strategy for addressing poverty and its correlates. …

Juvenile Delinquency And The Transition To Monopoly Capitalism, Kevin I. Minor Dec 1993

Juvenile Delinquency And The Transition To Monopoly Capitalism, Kevin I. Minor

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper identifies three macrosociological forces (i.e., the social position of youth, private market relations, and poverty and inequality) that are crucial for understanding delinquency and analyzes how these forces evolved together as part of the historical transformation in the United States to monopoly capitalism. The thesis is that these forces have contributed to delinquency by acting collectively to decrease the capacity of social institutions to maintain informal social control. Implications for policy are also considered.

Primary Coolant Flow Characteristics As It Exits The Palisades Reactor, Gregory Alan Baustian Dec 1993

Primary Coolant Flow Characteristics As It Exits The Palisades Reactor, Gregory Alan Baustian

Masters Theses

During fuel cycles 9 and 10 at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, new phenomena have been observed using the resistance temperature devices installed in the reactor coolant piping. Oscillations in the temperature readings have been observed leading to the assumptions that there is temperature stratification of the coolant in the reactor hot-legs and that the coolant rotates as it leaves the reactor. In addition, oscillations in the bulk coolant flow within the two hot legs have been postulated. This report outlines work performed using computational fluid dynamics modelling which predict the observed and assumed flow characteristics of the Palisades reactor …

Karma In Theodicy, Joji Watanabe Dec 1993

Karma In Theodicy, Joji Watanabe

Masters Theses

The study of religion explicates fascinating aspects of human history. From the past through the present to future times, in every area of human history a person's religious views provide his or her specific world view: How to consider the meaning of life or world. In a sense, suffering has come up as one of major problems in religion. This is because how a group of people finds release from suffering explains the specific aspect of each religious tradition.

With the above as a basis, theodicy was set not as God's justice in the Judeo-Christian tradition but as a broad …

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Risk Factors Among Hand Therapists, Suzanne Makielski Dec 1993

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Risk Factors Among Hand Therapists, Suzanne Makielski

Masters Theses

The following study examined the presence of risk factors among hand therapists for developing carpal tunnel syndrome. A review of the literature indicated a significant relationship between the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome and manual workers whose occupational tasks involve repetitive wrist and hand movements. Hand therapists were characterized as manual workers while possessing specialized knowledge and skill in the evaluation and treatment of hand and wrist disorders. Biomechanical analysis of various "hands on" techniques revealed repetitive wrist and hand movements including the use of force and increased risk for injury associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to determine …

Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of Psti-L Fragment Of Tanapox Virus Genomic Dna, Sarah J. Neering Dec 1993

Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of Psti-L Fragment Of Tanapox Virus Genomic Dna, Sarah J. Neering

Masters Theses

Tanapox virus (TPV), of the genus Yatapoxvirus, is a human poxvirus that was originally isolated from the Tana River Valley in Kenya in 1962. TPV produces a mild disease characterized by a short febrile illness associated with one or more nodular skin lesions. Although there have been limited studies on TPV, other poxviruses such as vaccinia virus, have been extensively characterized and their genomic DNAs sequenced. In order to examine the molecular features of TPV, we have cloned approximately 17% of the genomic DNA. TPV DNA was digested with Pstl restriction endonuclease and cloned into pUC19. The Pst …

Effects Of Cocaine On Fixed-Ratio Responding Of Rats: Modulation By Required Response Force, Malath Makhay Dec 1993

Effects Of Cocaine On Fixed-Ratio Responding Of Rats: Modulation By Required Response Force, Malath Makhay

Masters Theses

The effects of acute cocaine administrations (5. 6 to 32 mg/kg) were determined in rats responding under a multiple fixed-ratio 15 fixed-ratio 15 schedule of food delivery. The minimum response effort required in one schedule component was 25 g, whereas in the other component it was 200 g. Cocaine produced generally dose-dependent decreases in rate of responding and increases in pre-ratio pause times under each component. There was, however, a significant interaction between force and drug dose, and the magnitude of drug effects were larger in the component requiring 200 g for lever operation. Although a number of other parameters …

Perceptions And Reactions Of Language Arts And Reading Teachers, Patricia K. Smith, Steven D. Rinehart, Karen F. Thomas Oct 1993

Perceptions And Reactions Of Language Arts And Reading Teachers, Patricia K. Smith, Steven D. Rinehart, Karen F. Thomas

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The success of whole language will depend upon its acceptance or rejection by classroom teachers. Some teachers avidly support change to whole language while others are reluctant to do so. Given the shift of language arts instruction from the mastery of skills and subskills to a whole language approach, this study investigated current practices in language instruction, the nature of changes, and the perceptions and reactions of teachers. Although the basal reading program continues to be the most widely-used approach to teaching reading in our country (Flood and Lapp, 1986; Barksdale, Thomas and Jones, 1990), a whole language philosophy is …

Book Reading Interactions: What Parents And Children Say, Janice Porterfield-Stewart Oct 1993

Book Reading Interactions: What Parents And Children Say, Janice Porterfield-Stewart

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Children's awareness of how they learn to read or how they view literacy events contributes to the way they approach book reading (Edwards, 1962; Johns, 1972; Muskopf, 1962; Stewart, 1988). Picturebook reading and story reading are the most common forms of interaction that occur between some parents and young children. Both kinds of interaction provide a rich context for language learning and for the development of story comprehension (Harkness and Miller, 1982; Morrow, 1989; DeLoache and DeMendoza, 1987). A number of studies have documented mothers as models in children's acquisition of literacy (Harkness and Miller, 1982; Morrow, 1989; Ninio and …

Ribtickling Literature: Educational Implications For Joke And Riddle Books In The Elementary Classroom, Patricia Wilson, Karen Kutiper

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

During a recent visit to an elementary school we delighted in the number of classrooms which featured writing and reading centers. One innovative third grade teacher went a step further and provided her students with a lively outlet for their creative skills in the "Humor Corner." As we entered the classroom, two youngsters were enjoying jokes produced by classmates and browsing through a few of the riddle books on display. Holding The Biggest Riddle Book in the World (Rosenbloom, 1976), one student greeted us with: "I bet you can't answer this one! What does an envelope say when you lick …

Helping Parents To Select And Evaluate Private Reading/Learning Centers, Norman A. Stahl, William A. Henk

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

For many parents, the various types of reading and learning centers springing up across the country represent a potential answer to their children's academic problems. In fact, commercial tutorial services are opening up on a daily basis in avenue strip malls, in community shopping districts and in local medical buildings. The marketing of these educational support services is part of a growing national trend toward offering private academic services. This rapidly growing service industry caters to parents with disposable income and a desire to help their children improve low grades and test scores, or to move and stay ahead of …
