Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Nine years ago a group of interested students of reading formed the Western Michigan University Chapter of the International Reading Association. Their purposes then, as now, were to encourage the study of reading problems at all educational levels, to stimulate and promote research in developmental, corrective and remedial reading, to study the various factors that influence progress in reading, to assist in the development of more adequate teacher-training programs, to disseminate knowledge helpful in the solution of problems related to reading, and to sponsor conferences and meetings planned to implement the purposes of the association.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In every classroom there are pupils who fail to make satisfactory progress in their language development. Some youngsters do poorly in reading while others are unable to spell or write effectively. The pupil who continually performs at a sub-standard level of accomplishment in reading and spelling is often looked upon as being either "stupid" or lazy by his teacher. Today it is not uncommon to find youngsters being labelled in this manner.

A Point Of View Concerning Anxiety And Its Relationship To Reading Achievement, Dorothy Mcginnis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Emotional adjustment seems to be a significant factor to consider in the diagnosis and treatment of reading difficulties. This statement is substantiated by a number of studies which have been made to investigate the incidence of emotional disturbances in retarded readers. Misseldine (18) studied the emotional background of thirty children with reading disabilities and concluded that practically all of the children tested were "insecure," "restless," and "emotionally ill." A study by Ellis (9) led him to conclude that there are emotional factors in many, if not all, cases of reading disability. Sylvester and Kunst (23) reported that all pupils with …

The Juvenile On Probation And Reading Retardation, W. William Blackmore
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The fact that delinquent boys tend to read at levels below their mental age is fairly well established in the literature (3). The suggestion is strong that delinquency and reading retardation may share a mutual etiology and causal relationship. Even stronger is the suggestion that the possibility of the rehabilitation of the delinquent youth on probation may be greatly enhanced if he is treated for reading retardation (5).

A Study Of The Effects Of Delayed Side-Tone Upon Voiced And Whispered Reading Time, Bruce Presten Ryan
Masters Theses
Definition of Delayed Side-Tone
The term delayed side-tone feedback refers to the delaying of one's hearing of himself by a fraction of a second, so that instead of hearing himself as he normally does, he hears himself or his own speech a fraction of a second later.
...in order to produce delayed speech feedback it is necessary to return the speaker's speech to his own ears approximately one-means of a magnetic tape recording and reproducing machine which has used to experience the effect prominently since they deliver delayed speech and exclude the normal air-borne undelayed speech sound which provides the …

The Relationship Of Union Attitude To Work Performance, Donald Leo Wass
The Relationship Of Union Attitude To Work Performance, Donald Leo Wass
Masters Theses
Present-day management is aware of the high work-output characteristic of some “rugged individualists" who have "anti- union" sentiments. Studies concerning individuals classified as "ratebusters” have been made by Dalton (4) and by Roethlisberger and Dickson (5). The higher production efficiency of the “ratebuster" is discussed along with the increased personnel problems related to these workers. Because of anti-union sentiments, the “ratebuster” can have a disruptive effect on the labor force as a whole.
The worker with strong pro- union sentiments has received very little attention in the literature. It is probable that present-day management classifies this worker as an undesirable …
