Theme Park Experiences Of Families With A Disabled Child Regarding Accessibility And Participation: Mixed Methods Study, Kylie Allan, Karen Park
Theme Park Experiences Of Families With A Disabled Child Regarding Accessibility And Participation: Mixed Methods Study, Kylie Allan, Karen Park
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Despite the large number of children with disabilities, there is little research focused on the experiences families with a child who has a disability have while at theme parks. Both play and leisure participation offer meaningful opportunities for self-expression and can support skill acquisition and building social connections, particularly in family-oriented environments, like amusement parks.
Methods: Using environmental assessments, surveys, and semi-structured interviews, this mixed-methods study explored the experiences of these families, specifically looking at accessibility and participation in the theme park environment. Thirty-seven parents and guardians completed the online survey, while 10 individuals also elected to …

The Impact Of Computer Training On Confidence And Occupational Participation In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Alicia Jones, Joseph A. Scazzero, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: It is fundamental to understand why older adults choose and use technology to fully understand how to meet the needs of an aging population in a technologically advanced society. This research aimed to design and implement a holistic technology training program for older adults that explores using a laptop beyond basic internet use.
Method: A pre-post mixed-method survey study took place at a local senior center. A classroom-style program was designed to deliver information and instruction using a digital device. An 11-item survey on attitudes toward technology using a 7-point Likert scale with qualitative responses was used to collect …

The Content Validity Of The Functional Cognition Index In Instrumental Activities Of Daily Living (Fci-Iadl) As A Screening Tool For Mild Cognitive Impairment (Mci) In Older Adults In Singapore, Namrata P. Sadarangani, Phyllis Simon
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a syndrome that is considered a transition phase between healthy cognitive aging and dementia. The person may have subjective memory complaints, substantiated by family or caregiver and/or impaired executive function, that lead to difficulties performing complex Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). Our objective was to develop a tool to assess functional cognition in IADLs as a screen for MCI in older adults.
Method: A Qualtrics survey questionnaire was rated by 15 content experts on the relevance of the 22 test item questions to the cognitive domains being measured using a 4-point …
Reframing Occupational Therapy In A Reactive Health System Through Prevention And Caregiver Training, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller
Reframing Occupational Therapy In A Reactive Health System Through Prevention And Caregiver Training, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This article explores the expanding role of occupational therapy in chronic disease management, prevention, and caregiver supported care. Occupational therapy is uniquely positioned to support health promotion and caregiver training but remains underused in prevention-focused health care models. Current literature from the Open Journal of Occupational Therapy highlights the importance of caregiver training, the systemic barriers limiting occupational therapy's role in chronic disease management, and the need for the profession to embrace a broader role within this area of practice.
Program Development And Implementation Of Adaptive Fishing Program At Western Michigan University Center For Disability Services, Will Harahan
Capstone Projects
Participation in meaningful leisure occupations is an essential component of health, well-being, and quality of life. Unfortunately, individuals with disabilities continue to experience numerous physical, environmental, and social barriers that limit participation in community-based recreational activities. Recreational fishing has emerged as an inclusive outdoor leisure occupation that promotes physical activity, social participation, confidence, and emotional well-being when appropriate adaptations and supports are available. The purpose of this capstone project was to develop, implement, and evaluate an adaptive fishing program for participants enrolled in the Western Michigan University Center for Disability Services (CDS) Skill Building Program. Guided by occupational therapy principles, …

‘It’S A Win-Win Situation’— Cultivating University & School Partnerships, Emily Wisniewski, Kelly Virgin, Pauline Skowron Schmidt
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
This qualitative case study examines Writing Zones, a fifteen-year university–high school partnership that embeds preservice English teachers in secondary classrooms as writing mentors. Drawing on surveys from 20 preservice teachers and eight high school teachers, along with follow-up interviews, the study explores perceptions of preparation, support, and program impact. Findings highlight Writing Zones as a mutually beneficial model that enhances student writing through individualized support while providing authentic, field-based learning for preservice teachers. However, effectiveness was conditional, shaped by mentor preparedness, clarity of roles, communication, and scheduling. The study underscores the importance of intentional training, sustained relationships, and institutional alignment …
Dismantling Future Writing Teachers’ English-Only Assumptions: Composing Videos To Learn The Value Of Linguistic And Cultural Inclusion, Ann N. Amicucci
Dismantling Future Writing Teachers’ English-Only Assumptions: Composing Videos To Learn The Value Of Linguistic And Cultural Inclusion, Ann N. Amicucci
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
This article presents the results of a study of 12 students’ video composing assignments and accompanying reflections in which students, all of whom were future writing teachers enrolled in an undergraduate TESOL course, examined how well public spaces acknowledged and included multilingual individuals. Students’ videos and reflections demonstrated that the assignment dismantled these future writing teachers’ assumptions that multilingual writers learn best in an English-only environment but perpetuated perceptions of languages as discrete rather than intertwined. Findings are discussed within the context of scholarship on writing teacher education and English-only policy and practice in the U.S.

Surviving And Thriving: The Indigenous Migrant, Danna Guzman-Rodriguez
Surviving And Thriving: The Indigenous Migrant, Danna Guzman-Rodriguez
Honors Theses
This literature and cultural study highlights the generation of children of indigenous immigrants and the relationship with their indigenous identity and culture. This unique experience is complex and encapsulates issues such as indigenous cultural survival, homogeneity, globalization, and lack of cultural identity. Exploring the Totonac community in La Chaca, Veracruz in Mexico, allows for a deeper explanation of this experience. Speakers of Totonac and other indigenous languages often migrate to countries such as the United States and carry such cultural ties with them. What happens to these ties after moving to a Western-dominated country where globalization favors English and Western …

An Attachment Perspective For Help-Seeking Intentions Among Emerging Adult Women Child Sexual Abuse Survivors, Dominique Giroux
An Attachment Perspective For Help-Seeking Intentions Among Emerging Adult Women Child Sexual Abuse Survivors, Dominique Giroux
Dissertations
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an adverse childhood experience and a global health issue. Approximately one in four girls encounter CSA per year. Research evidence suggests approximately 50% of CSA survivors encounter sexual revictimization during adulthood (Walker & Wamser-Nanney, 2023), but formal help and intervention can mitigate further psychosocial harm experienced by CSA survivors (Widom et al., 2008). Attachment theory has provided a theoretical framework for identifying individuals at risk for revictimization and help-seeking patterns, such that individuals who have insecure attachment styles report more revictimization frequency, but the literature is mixed about attachment styles and help-seeking (Brenner et al., …
Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud
Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud
Dissertations
Deep learning has become the dominant approach for solving vision-centric problems; however, its successful deployment in real-world applications remains limited by high computational cost, data dependency, and insufficient integration with practical and human-centered environments. While state-of-the art deep learning models often achieve impressive performance in controlled settings, they frequently fail to generalize or operate efficiently under deployment constraints such as limited resources, complex data modalities, and real-time interaction requirements. These limitations motivate the need for a deployment-oriented deep learning framework that balances accuracy, efficiency, and practical usability.
This dissertation investigates the design and deployment of efficient deep learning architectures for …
