Keys To Professional Information For Teachers, Roy C. Bryan

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)

One is well aware that graduate students, in the earlier days of their advanced study, tend to be wasteful of their time and effort. Much of this waste is caused by the fact that they have little knowledge of the library keys and indexes that will aid them in locating references quickly and assembling bibliographies that are pertinent to their papers and projects.

This publication is designed to provide that much n needed assistance. The materials contained herein, admittedly, do not include every key and index that is now available. However, the School of Graduate Studies is convinced that those …

Historical Fiction In The Teaching Of World History, Helen Bernice Lobdell

Masters Theses

The Problem

I. Intent. The purpose of this study is two-fold. The first is to survey historical fiction with a view to the selection, on the basis of established criteria, of readings which would be suitable for use in a senior high school course of study in world history. The second purpose is to determine certain periods as recognized by teachers of world history in which such literature is readily available.

An Investigation Of Certain Factors Influencing The Testing Of Auditory Phonetic Discrimination, Warren Scott Curtis Jan 1957

An Investigation Of Certain Factors Influencing The Testing Of Auditory Phonetic Discrimination, Warren Scott Curtis

Masters Theses

The Background of the Problem

Review of the Literature

The importance of auditory phonetic discrimination in speech therapy. One of the basic criteria for good articulation is that the individual sounds or phonetic units which make up a word must be produced correctly and arranged properly in sequence. According to Van Riper (32:127), when a speaker adds, omits or distorts a particular phoneme to the extent that it alters word meaning, calls attention to itself, and/or produces unpleasant emotional reactions in the speaker or audience, he is adjusted to have an articulation defect.

An Investigation Of Nylon Fiber As A Papermaking Material, Robert J. Thiessen Jun 1956

An Investigation Of Nylon Fiber As A Papermaking Material, Robert J. Thiessen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Investigations were made to determine whether or not a practical method of bonding nylon-wood blend paper could be devised in which advantage is obtained from the strength qualities of the nylon fibers in the finished sheet. Two unsatisfactory methods were tried before a satisfactory method was found. By this method 25-to 50-per cent nylon content sheets were dipped in a five to ten-per cent solids water emulsion of a polyamide resin. The sheets were then dried, free of surface support, and then heat pressed to complete the bonding. Paper of high strength and durability was thus produced.

An Investigation Of The Vocal Phonic Abilities Of Children With Normal Speech And Articulation Disorders, Orville Wilson Wensley

Masters Theses

Introduction

Much of the recent literature dealing with the etiology and treatment of functional articulatory defects, has been concerned with perceptual aspects of the problem. Many clinicians feel that it is in the area of perceptual deficiences that most of the causes of articulatory defects occur, even though research does not support that opinion.

An Exploratory Study Of Differential Diadochokinesis, Marie C. Crickmay Jan 1956

An Exploratory Study Of Differential Diadochokinesis, Marie C. Crickmay

Masters Theses

Introduction

In speech man is forced to use organs, muscles and groups of muscles whose basic function is to serve other purposes, namely, to chew, to suck and swallow, movements which are relatively slow and primitive in execution. But in articulate speech it is necessary to manipulate these same organs and muscles at a faster speech, and with far greater precision than was required of them in the performance of their basic function.

Separation Of Carbon From Deinking Waste By Means Of Flotation, Lester R. Beeman Jun 1955

Separation Of Carbon From Deinking Waste By Means Of Flotation, Lester R. Beeman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The technique of froth flotation, as practiced in the separation of mineral ores, has been applied to the separation of carbon black from the deinking waste of the paper industry.

On the theory that carbon black (from ink) has a positive charge in water, and clay and cellulose fibers have negative charges in water, experiments were of two types. First, it was attempted to float the carbon from the clay and cellulose fibers. Second, it was attempted to float the clay and cellulose fibers from the carbon.

Several possible formulas were found for separating carbon black from deinking waste. Favorable …

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

The Place of World History in Secondary Education

The study of world history has great significance in our secondary schools. In an age of persistent world crisis, the importance of the skills, information, and powers of analysis that may be acquired through the study of world history is deemed essential by many educators. The fact of its presence in the curriculum is in itself evidence that world history is considered important. In the most recent survey available from the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare

it was noted that world history is "quite …

Optimization Of A Kraft Pulp Dioxirane Bleaching Stage, Eric A. Thompson Apr 1955

Optimization Of A Kraft Pulp Dioxirane Bleaching Stage, Eric A. Thompson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This research characterized and optimized the bleaching potential of dimethyldioxirane (DMD) on an -oxygen-delignified hardwood kraft pulp. The DMD wash produced in-situ using a caroate (2KHSO5.KHSO4.K2 SO4) acetone under controlled conditions. The studied variables included chemical concentration, consistency, temperature, reaction time, and chelation. Statistically designed experiments with response surface, methodology were used - to help locate the optimum conditions with respect to pulp brightness and strength. These conditions were located at 2.8% AO (activated-oxygen charge), 5.5% consistency, and 55° C.

It was found that over 95% of the total brightness …

The Influence Of Varying Hydrogen Ion And Alumina Concentrations On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Made In The Presence Of Locust Bean Gum, Ronald L. Hamilton Jun 1954

The Influence Of Varying Hydrogen Ion And Alumina Concentrations On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Made In The Presence Of Locust Bean Gum, Ronald L. Hamilton

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Mannogalactans and particularly locust bean gum are used for a wide variety of applications. They serve as thickening agents and emulsifiers for foodstuffs, in sizing as well as finishing yarns and in creaming rubber latex. The papermaking industry is the largest user of mannogalactans. Here they are used in kraft grades, sulphite, book papers, coating raw stock, offset and printing grades, bonds, ledgers, and other fine papers and also in newsprint and other groundwood sheets.

Locust bean gum and methylcellulose are effective as deflocculating agents and are said to surpass the performance of deacetylated karaya gum. Both hydration film and …
