Comparative Study Of Flotation And Sidehill Washing Stages In Deinking Coated Magazine Stock, Joseph M. Korepta Dec 1976

Comparative Study Of Flotation And Sidehill Washing Stages In Deinking Coated Magazine Stock, Joseph M. Korepta

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This is a study comparing the effectiveness of removing ink particles, consumption of water, and the retention of coating and/or filler pigments in deinked pulp between the flotation washing method and the counter-current sidehill washing method. Coated magazine waste paper was deinked using 5.3% Sodium Hydroxide at 190°F. The washing stage of both methods was carried out at a .9% consistency and a temperature of 30°C. The results of the study indicate that the flotation method of washing deinked pulp removed the majority of ink particles but did not remove the coating and filler pigments. The …

The Effect Of Various Concentrations Of Alkali With The Adsorption Of Calcium Ions Onto Oleic Acid, Thomas J. Mcapline Dec 1976

The Effect Of Various Concentrations Of Alkali With The Adsorption Of Calcium Ions Onto Oleic Acid, Thomas J. Mcapline

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to find an optimum condition for the formation of the precipitated calcium soaps. The system investigated included the range of alkali addition of 0 to 1.2 pounds per one hundred gallons (#/100 gal.). A direct relationship between the adsorption with an increasing alkali concentration to a maximum of 145 parts per million calcium ion adsorbed to 833.5 ppm oleic acid when .225 (#/100 gal.) is applied. It shows that any higher concentration of an alkali will level out the maximum calcium adsorption to approximately 140 ppm.

It was also found that the alkali demand …

The Rank And File Movement: The Relevance Of Radical Social Work Traditions To Modern Social Work Practice, Leslie Leighninger, Robert Knickmeyer Nov 1976

The Rank And File Movement: The Relevance Of Radical Social Work Traditions To Modern Social Work Practice, Leslie Leighninger, Robert Knickmeyer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social work, like many fields, has sometimes suffered from an inadequate and distorted understanding of its own history. A profession's inattention to its past is an unfortunate thing. As Clark Chambers has noted, the study of social work history provides models for social work practice and yields insights into social processes (31 11-22). Works like Cloward and Piven's Regulating the Poor have demonstrated the rich potential of the social welfare case study for social analyses (4). In addition, examination of goals and motivations of specific social workers in the past have served to further our understanding of professional issues and …

Comunication Disturbances In A Welfare Bureaucracy: A Case For Self Management, Robert E. O'Conner, Larry D. Spence

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The survey data in this study of 1313 caseworkers and income-maintenance workers of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare provide some elements of a description of white-collar alienation in government bureaucracies. We interpret our findings to indicate that the hierarchical communication network of this department operates to deny implicitly the worth and intelligence of workers. As perceived by employees, the general pattern of message construction, message transmission and message acknowledgment takes no account of their needs for information and validation nor does it allow the information generated at the work place to be fed back to the administration. Thus, the …

The Politics Of Drug Addiction: A Comparison Of United States And Chinese Drug Policies Since 1949, Richard Fortmann Nov 1976

The Politics Of Drug Addiction: A Comparison Of United States And Chinese Drug Policies Since 1949, Richard Fortmann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

During the past decade the increase in drug use and drug addiction in the United States has been viewed with growing alarm. Drug addiction has been compared to a contagious disease, an epidemic which is raging in our cities and towns. Although the rhetoric has become more dramatic, the drug problem is certainly not a new one. This paper is concerned with the historic failure of United States policies to eliminate or even to contain drug abuse and drug addiction. It is the central thesis of this paper that drug addiction is a social disease, and as such is symptomatic …

Learning Modality: Another Pebble In The Pond, Diana Scott

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Approaches for teaching reading, as found in the plethora of reading materials now available, have become increasingly diversified. Audio materials have been added to several major reading programs. Kinesthetic materials are now provided for some programs. Many authors of reading programs are now reluctant to rely on "visual only" cues for teaching the numerous reading skills.

Reading In The Secondary School: Teaching Students How To Add Words To Their Vocabulary, Part I, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

It is not difficult to collect a number of statements by the experts on why we must teach vocabulary growth. Words are the tools of communication, and, words are units out of which we build all thought and philosophy. Those are the truisms of yesterday, too old to attribute to a single person, and seldom thought about in today's world. Here is a thought by an expert today—"The substrata-factor research by Holmes and Singer indicates that vocabulary deserves predominant emphasis, since it contributes 51 percent to reading speed —far more than any other first-order factor." (James I. Brown, "Increasing Reading …

Proponents of a psychometric view of reading support the notion that there are identifiable "skills." These skills portray a compact picture of reading that underlies both its measurement and its teaching.

The Effect Of Music On Reading, Patrick Groff Oct 1976

The Effect Of Music On Reading, Patrick Groff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

It is apparent that music and language reading are both perceptual acts. To read either language or music one obviously must pay close attention to selective details of a graphic display. To listen to music or to words read aloud also involves some common perceptual abilities. Therefore, it is predictable that some have claimed that children's experiences with music will help them to learn to read language. There are several "parallels" in music and language reading, Monroe contends.
