Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl Jan 1965

Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this research was to prepare the bisarylsulfonic acid esters of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol.

This series of compounds is of interest because of the antitumor activity exhibited by the bismethanesulfonates of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol. The compounds which were prepared were submitted to Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center for evaluation in their anticancer program.

It was hoped that the compounds synthesized would be of pharmacological value. It was further hoped that the biological test data of these compounds would demonstrate a correlation between types of substituents on the aromatic nucleus and the degree of activity of the compounds. …

Kalamazoo, Michigan, And The Formation Of The Republican Party Of Michigan, James M. Rigterink Jan 1965

Kalamazoo, Michigan, And The Formation Of The Republican Party Of Michigan, James M. Rigterink

Masters Theses

Introduction

When Judge Levi Baxter rapped for order in the afternoon of July 6, 1854, at Jackson, Michigan, his gavel echoed the discontent gripping the Old Northwest. "Fellow citizens of Michigan...," he said, "let us bow our heads and pray for success in the great enterprise which has brought us here."1 In the oak grove the heads of 4,000 people of conviction bowed in agreement.2 By evening of that day the Republican party of Michigan was an accomplished fact.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the background of the Jackson convention of July 6, 1854, with …

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

A curriculum can be developed in several ways. The simplest method is to use the curriculum of another institution without modification. The hazard of such an approach lies in the possibility that the curriculum may not be a good one or, even if satisfactory for the original institution, may not fit into the conditions of the setting where it is to be used. For example, entrance requirements for institutions vary from country to country and from one institution to another.

Another method is to study a number of curriculums and develop a composite curriculum …

Little Things Can Make Reading Easier, Louis Foley Oct 1964

Little Things Can Make Reading Easier, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In recent years, specialists in linguistics have become increasingly aware of a fundamental reason for poor reading. That is the reading of words one by one, instead of promptly recognizing their grouping, the patterns in which they are joined, or in other words sentence structure. The way a person reads orally seems to be a reliable indication of how he reads silently, for as a leading authority has remarked, "it is not likely that a word-caller in oral reading will read silently by language structures."* so it should be easy to determine in any case whether this basic fault is …

A Precious Legacy, Louise J. Walker

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

One of the blessings of my childhood was the utter freedom in which I was left to explore, sample, and lose myself in books. Almost as soon as I could handle a book, my parents taught me how to open and use one properly. Books have become a part of me. I would be lost without them. They are a way of life for me. I wish this same freedom for all children today!

Ah, Wilderness, George Egland

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In the movement toward greater and greater specialization which is so popular these days, we can find growing tendencies for the members of new branch-professions to operate in ways which dis courage interprofessional cooperation. In much the same way as adolescents strive to establish distinct and secure self-images, so the various branches of the educational profession are seeking separate identity and status, and they are choosing routes which remove them as far as possible from their neighbors. This exclusiveness is pointed up dramatically by the very labels and distinguishing lingo which the new specialties are adopting.

"Look, Ma, He's Reading", Pauline Lucas

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

You learn to swim by swimming. You learn to sing by singing. You learn to drive a car by driving. The same truth holds for reading; you learn to read by reading, to really read that is, not merely to pronounce words. Why, then, don't we as teachers spend more time and effort leading children to the joys and habits of reading—volunteer reading for fun, for recreation, for sheer enjoyment?

An Evaluation Of Alcohol Education Materials In Elementary, Junior High School, And Senior High School Textbooks As Rei.Ated To Student Needs, Daniel L. Paul Jul 1964

An Evaluation Of Alcohol Education Materials In Elementary, Junior High School, And Senior High School Textbooks As Rei.Ated To Student Needs, Daniel L. Paul

Masters Theses

Every state in the United States has statutory provisions requiring alcohol education in the public schools . The earliest of these laws dates back to 1858.Taking these facts into account one might assume that by this time, alcohol education programs would be well established and clearly defined, but most authorities in the field would say that this assumption is incorrect. The reasons for the failure of alcohol education programs to become well established are many and complicated, and are not the function of this paper to discuss except for one aspect, which is one of the contributing factors to this …

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga Jul 1964

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga

Masters Theses

Introduction

In 1957, Adam Rapacki, Foreign Minister of Poland, proposed that a zone be created in Central Europe in which nuclear weapons of all kinds would be prohibited. The zone was to include the countries of West Germany, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. This paper seeks to study that proposal in the light of its background and consequences. The purpose of such a study, beyond the hopeful accretion of knowledge, is to form conclusions based on the analysis of the proposal as the beginning of a solution to the political and military impasse in Central Europe.

The proposal will be …

Southern Expansion In The Caribbean Region, 1850-1860, Keith Ross Speiran Jul 1964

Southern Expansion In The Caribbean Region, 1850-1860, Keith Ross Speiran

Masters Theses

The Background: 1846-1850

The term "Fillibuster" has a different connotation in modern times than that of a hundred years ago. Today according to The American College Dictionary, the term means, "a member of a minority in a legislative assembly who resorts to irregular or obstructive tactics to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored, or to force a decision almost unanimously disliked." The dictionary also gives the older definition, which will be used in this paper. This meaning is "an irregular military adventurer; a freebooter or buccaneer."

The purpose of this thesis is to describe a number of …

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson Jul 1964

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

Suburban-living has become a major part of our culture and the term has been widely accepted and interpreted to mean a distinctive way of life highly advantaged over life in strictly urban or rural settings. The first major move to the suburbs was by the wealthier segments of our society, and the gracious, leisurely pattern of living they sought still colors the popular image of the term "suburban."

Ailred Of Riveaulx The Consistency Of His Life And Writings With His Thought And His Profession As Cistercian Monk, Tyrrell Hughes Jul 1964

Ailred Of Riveaulx The Consistency Of His Life And Writings With His Thought And His Profession As Cistercian Monk, Tyrrell Hughes

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The author confesses to a profound emotional involvement with AiIred of Rievaulx, Saint of the Church and man whose love was charity, the love that is like God's love. But this zealousness on his behalf was born after analysis of and reflection on Ailred's life and writings, comparing these judgments with the treatments he has received at the hands of various scholars, among them the fine names of David Knowles, F.M. Powicke, C. H. Talbot and Aelred Squire. The initial reaction induced by the comparison was indignation at the injustice done AiIred, but much more at the seeming …
