Another Look At Reading And The Teaching Of Reading, Melvin L. Miller Jul 1967

Another Look At Reading And The Teaching Of Reading, Melvin L. Miller

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In recent years a continuous process of searching, experimenting, exploring, evaluating and revising has been pursued in an effort to achieve a better understanding of and performance in respect to reading instruction. This state of dissatisfaction with the teaching of reading and its achievements is appropriate. This is not because present day methods are inadequate and that present day achievements in reading are insufficient. Possible future developments suggest that our efforts should be even more adequate and the returns even greater; that is, a state of higher expectations in reading instruction should be maintained at all times. Perhaps these expectations …

A Study Of The Accuracy Of Prediction Motion In Depth, Neal I. Gelfand

Masters Theses

The study examined the effects of five variables: knowledge of results, distance, stimulus gradient, target speed, and temporal delay (a measure of temporal relationship between the target and standard) on the accuracy with which 3s could predict the arrival of a moving target at the position of a stationary standard.

The results of an analysis of variance on the data obtained from 52 Ss indicated that the variables of knowledge of results, distance.- speed, and temporal delay had statistically significant effects; but no statistical significance was indicated for effects of the gradient variable. Three statistically significant interactions were also indicated: …

The Problem

Introduction

The importance of work to an individual in society is documented by a number of authorities who stress the idea that the average male adult spends more time in his occupation than in any other activity. Before an individual becomes involved in the world of work, he must make decisions regarding the occupation he expects to follow. This type of decision-making has been defined as "... a process which takes place over a period of time and which is best explained by a combination of determinants which themselves interact, are modified and developed with time." (Super, 1957). …

A Caution Concerning The Use Of Standardized Tests, Ronald Crowell Apr 1967

A Caution Concerning The Use Of Standardized Tests, Ronald Crowell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As teachers in the schools of this country, we pay lip service to the proposal that we must be concerned with the education of the individual. In our textbooks in college, we are reminded that the aim of good teaching is to bring about a change of behavior in the individual. In our classrooms, because of broad differences in individual reading ability and individual performance, we often find it necessary to group students into small, more homogeneous, groups so that we can meet the reading needs of the individual student.

Another Hat For The Special Reading Teacher, Lucille Larzelere Jan 1967

Another Hat For The Special Reading Teacher, Lucille Larzelere

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The special reading teacher functions most successfully if he is one who can wear many different hats. He may be required to wear more than one at a time or to change them rather quickly with the ease of a magician. He is versatile and flexible in this accomplishment. However, there is one hat in particular to which we would like to give attention in this article. It is a hat that is deserving particular attention because it is a year around necessity and should be worn in any season. It is indispensable to the reading teacher who works with …
