The Role Of The School Psychologist In The Teaching Of Reading, Ruth C. Penty
The Role Of The School Psychologist In The Teaching Of Reading, Ruth C. Penty
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The school psychologist or psychological examiner without specific training in the reading area can help the teacher of reading to better understand her task. The psychologist or examiner with background in the teaching of reading can be of even more help to the classroom teacher.

A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
Masters Theses
Preface
This study is prepared to establish a method of evaluating supervisory training. An attempt to evaluate the following hypotheses will be considered: (1) There is a method of selecting the basic performance areas of a first line supervisor. (2) There are acceptable standards of performance in the basic area. (3) Performance appraisals prior to the introduction of training will determine sub-standard performance in the selected areas. (4) Follow-up performance appraisals will indicate the effectiveness of training in improving performance without undue contamination of the criteria by other influences.
During the study other areas of investigation to be examined are: …

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)
Faculty Publications 1957-61 is the first major compilation of the publications of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Compilations like this one are not unique. Nearly all the major universities, as well as many of the smaller institutions of higher education, have prepared them for a number of years. It seemed reasonable, when the enterprise was first planned, for Western Michigan University to publish the compilation as one of the Faculty Contributions of the School of Graduate Studies.

The major concern of this paper is the problem of the retarded readers. They are children whose reading achievement is less than their general measured ability.

Mental Content And Its Relationship To Flexibility Of Reading, Homer L.J. Carter, Dorothy J. Mcginnis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
If reading performance is to vary as to kind and degree and especially if rate of reading and the newer media of instruction are to be stressed, a greater emphasis must be placed upon mental content and its relationship to the reading process. For example, in the sentence "The whipple-tree and traces were seriously damaged," little meaning can be secured without adequate mental content. An increased span of perception provides limited help. Contextual clues are of little value. Structural analysis furnishes little aid, and a rapid rate of reading complicates the whole attempt to secure understanding. There must be mental …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
We are well aware of the complexities we face today in teaching our children to be able readers. It is a much bigger problem than to be able to verbalize words phonetically. Experts in the field of research in psychology, child development, and reading have contributed a great deal of valuable knowledge to aid teachers in the skill of teaching children to read. These ideas are being successfully practiced and we are producing capable readers. However, there is one phase of reading that needs greater stress. To derive the greatest benefit from living in our democracy and to cope with …

A Survey Of Current Techniques For Selecting First-Line Supervisors In Industry, Linford A. Sutherland
A Survey Of Current Techniques For Selecting First-Line Supervisors In Industry, Linford A. Sutherland
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this investigation is to show to what extent the selection of supervisors is still based on subjective opinion, and to what extent objective devices have been developed and have gained acceptance.
The collection of relevant data for this survey involves a search of the published literature in the field. In this work the terms first-line supervisor, foreman, and supervisor will be used interchangeably.
The writer's interest in the area of supervisory selection was aroused after reading several articles on the problem of selecting factory supervisors of the highest caliber as industry now realizes that the supervisory …
The First British Labor Government 1924, Donald Black
The First British Labor Government 1924, Donald Black
Masters Theses
Introduction
In 1924, the Labor Part, assumed control or Britain's political destinies for the first time. Although its tenure or office was brief, from February through October of that year, it marked an important milestone in the slow, unrelenting progress of democratic socialism in the British political spectrum after the conclusion of World War I. Not only did it reveal that Labor could assume its role as an effective opposition Party, but also that Labor had the capacity to govern in a difficult and perplexing era.
A Study Of Figural After-Effects In The Inverted-“T”-Illusion, Wayne H. Bartz
A Study Of Figural After-Effects In The Inverted-“T”-Illusion, Wayne H. Bartz
Masters Theses
Introduction
The term figural after-effect refers to the spatial displacement of a visual figure induced by the inspection of a prior figure. In the figural after-effect paradigm, an observer fixates on a figure called the inspection figure for some time. Fixation is then shifted to a test figure. Any spatial displacement in the test (second) figure is termed the figural after-effect. Generally, maximal figural after-effects are attained with 60 second inspection followed immediately by short test figure exposure (Hammer, 1949; Graham, 1951; Krauskopf, 1954; Parducci and Brookshire, 1956; Sagara and Oyama, 1957; and Kohler and Wallach, 1944). This study is …

Constant X Of The Alcoholic Personality: A Research Study On The Personality Factor In Alcoholism, Jean Carpenter
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
The problem of alcoholism is one of the oldest problems in the history of mankind. Today it ranks world-wide as a major public health problem. Yet, constructive study and research on the subject did not gain much momentum until about 1935.
With the organization of Alcoholism Anonymous in 1935, the awareness of the problem spread, fanwise, throughout the fields of religion, medicine, and psychiatry. Alcohol had once presented a baffling and seemingly unanswerable enigma. But now there was a glimmering of hope in each of these separate fields that the answers might lie within its own particular …

The Conception Of The Proper Work Of A Missionary In The Correspondence Of Boniface, Albert Crawford
Masters Theses
First Paragraph:
The seventh through the tenth centuries witnessed a great expansion of the Roman Catholic Church to the north into lands that were partially or completely pagan. As one of the great missionary periods of the Church it demands the attention of the Church historian. As an important step in the civilization of Europe it demands the attention of the secular historian, as an expression of the contemporary doctrine of the nature of the Church and what is essential for the expansion of that Church into other cultures, it demands the attention of the theologian. The importance of this …

An Investigation Of The Horizontal-Vertical Illusion, Frederick J. Boersma
An Investigation Of The Horizontal-Vertical Illusion, Frederick J. Boersma
Masters Theses
Experimenters have used the inverted "T" to illustrate the horizontal-vertical illusion for many years. This illusion is characterized by the subject perceiving the horizontal line as shorter than the vertical line.
Credit is usually given to Fick (1851) for being first to call attention to the discrepancy between horizontal and vertical estimates. He demonstrated this by visually noticing that a bright square on a dark background looks like an oblong object. Hicks (1906) stated that Oppel was the first person to actually investigate the horizontal-vertical illusion.
The classical theory generally states that an equal length vertical line in a "T" …
