Investigations Of Neutron Collimators And Detector Systems Used In A Neutron-Capture Internal-Conversion Apparatus, William Charles Johnston Sep 1964

Investigations Of Neutron Collimators And Detector Systems Used In A Neutron-Capture Internal-Conversion Apparatus, William Charles Johnston

Masters Theses

Preface

During the past six decades considerable effort has been devoted to investigating and explaining the phenomena associated with the atomic nucleus. However, many important features of the nucleus still are not understood. Among these are such fundamental aspects as the structural composition of the nucleus, the nature of the forces between nucleons, and several of the basic processes that occur among the nuclear constituents. The goal of nuclear physics is to construct a unified theory which is able to explain all nuclear phenomena.

The experimentalist contributes toward this objective by gathering and classifying extensive amounts of experimental data in …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Auditory And Combined Auditory-Visual Cues Upon Judged Intelligibility Of Artificial Larynx Speech And Esophageal Speech, Mary Ellen Carder Aug 1964

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Auditory And Combined Auditory-Visual Cues Upon Judged Intelligibility Of Artificial Larynx Speech And Esophageal Speech, Mary Ellen Carder

Masters Theses

Introduction

Surveys have shown that the incidence of total laryngectomy, surgical removal of the larynx, has increased steadily in the United States since 1947 when a total of 846 cases were reported (19, 20), to the present time when cancer registries indicate that about 4,400 new cases of cancer of the larynx are discovered annually (13). While it is estimated that in the United States at the present time there are 15,000 to 20,000 individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to a carcinomatous condition of that organ (27), it is probable that the total population of …

Have Good Readers--Will Go Places, Joan Paul

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

John, a well developed fifth grade boy, has been chosen to repre sent his school in an all-city sports contest. Since he is very athletic and has been encouraged by his classmates, he stands a good chance of winning the 100-yard-dash trophy for his school. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? But, wait. What if his teacher tells him to run slowly so the other boys can keep up with him? No teacher would dream of doing that. We do not expect children to run at the same rate, and we encourage them to try to excel.

Ready Or Not Should They Be Taught, Vern L. Farrow Jul 1964

Ready Or Not Should They Be Taught, Vern L. Farrow

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

One quiet afternoon recently as I was pondering an article advocating early reading instruction, I could hear my children playing hide-and-seek. They were shouting, "Ready or not you shall be caught!" I could not help drawing an analogy between the meaning of their childish rhyme and my feeling toward the growing tempo and insistence of demands to plunge preschool children indiscriminately into formalized reading activities. Unconsciously I paraphrased the rhyme, "Ready or not you SHALL be TAUGHT!" It had an ominous connotation smacking of pursuit, capture, and force and I began considering the problem in earnest.

Angular Correlation Of Co60, Henry Kuhlman

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The probability that a radioactive nucleus will emit a gama ray may depend on the angle between the nuclear spin axis and the direction of emission. The radiation pattern of a sample of randomly oriented nuclei is isotropic. An anisotropic pattern may be observed if the nuclear spin axes are aligned.

The Reaction To Ketoacylhydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Lavern M. Weisenberger Jul 1964

The Reaction To Ketoacylhydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Lavern M. Weisenberger

Masters Theses

Introduction

It has been shown that ketohydrazones react with lead tetraacetate to give azoacetates in good yields (11) according to the following equation:

R2C=N-NH-R + Pb(OAc)4 → R2C(OAc)-N=N-R + Pb(OAe)2 + HOAc

The reaction of the structurally related 4,4- disubstituted ketosemicarbazones with lead tetraacetate quite unexpectedly gave carbamates in good yields (10) presumably according to the following equation:

R2C=N-NH-Co-NR2 + Pb(OAc)4 → R2C-O-CO-NR2 + N2 + Pb(OAc)2 + HOAc

Southern Expansion In The Caribbean Region, 1850-1860, Keith Ross Speiran Jul 1964

Southern Expansion In The Caribbean Region, 1850-1860, Keith Ross Speiran

Masters Theses

The Background: 1846-1850

The term "Fillibuster" has a different connotation in modern times than that of a hundred years ago. Today according to The American College Dictionary, the term means, "a member of a minority in a legislative assembly who resorts to irregular or obstructive tactics to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored, or to force a decision almost unanimously disliked." The dictionary also gives the older definition, which will be used in this paper. This meaning is "an irregular military adventurer; a freebooter or buccaneer."

The purpose of this thesis is to describe a number of …

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson Jul 1964

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

Suburban-living has become a major part of our culture and the term has been widely accepted and interpreted to mean a distinctive way of life highly advantaged over life in strictly urban or rural settings. The first major move to the suburbs was by the wealthier segments of our society, and the gracious, leisurely pattern of living they sought still colors the popular image of the term "suburban."

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton Jul 1964

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. Finally, the validity of the six sub-scales, the original 22 item scale, and a related …

An Evaluation Of Alcohol Education Materials In Elementary, Junior High School, And Senior High School Textbooks As Related To Student Needs, Daniel L. Paul

Masters Theses

Every state in the United States has statutory provisions requiring alcohol education in the public schools . The earliest of these laws dates back to 1858.Taking these facts into account one might assume that by this time, alcohol education programs would be well established and clearly defined, but most authorities in the field would say that this assumption is incorrect. The reasons for the failure of alcohol education programs to become well established are many and complicated, and are not the function of this paper to discuss except for one aspect, which is one of the contributing factors to this …

Analysis Of The Relationship Of Items On An Employment Application To Length Of Service, Margery Hidenach White Jun 1964

Analysis Of The Relationship Of Items On An Employment Application To Length Of Service, Margery Hidenach White

Masters Theses

Certain factors on an application blank may be predictive of length of service and of job success. If personal history items which successfully differentiate between the short-term and long-term employee or the desirable and undesirable employee can be identified, it would assist in the selection process.

A review of recent research concerning factors on an employment application as related to job success reveals that, although considerable research was done in this area during the early 19SO's, there has not been much published in the past two years. Apparently there are three reasons for this: (1) early results indicated high validity …

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder Jun 1964

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

On the second of June in the year 1140, a Council of the Church in Sens formally condemned as heretical nineteen propositions from the works of Peter Abelard, philosopher, theologian, and teacher of unparalleled popularity. Denying emphatically that his teaching varied in any way from that of the Church, Abelard appealed to Rome, only to have Innocent II uphold the decision of the Council. He upheld the condemnation of Abelard’s works, ordered his writings to be burned, forbade him ever again to teach, and, finally, ordered him to perpetual penance. The condemnation of Abelard can be laid to …

Investigation Of Possible Autotoxicity In Daucus Carota L., Carole Greer Smith Jun 1964

Investigation Of Possible Autotoxicity In Daucus Carota L., Carole Greer Smith

Masters Theses

Section I

Introduction

Results of recent research indicate the probable existence of plant-produced chemical substances which affect the behavior of other plants. Germination-inhibiting, and growth-inhibiting substances have been found to be widely distributed throughout the Plant Kingdom (Garb, 1960). Although the presence of inhibitors has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments, their ecological significance has not been clearly defined.

A preliminary study by the writer indicated the probability of autotoxicity in Daucus carota L., a biennial common to fields and roadsides in the northeastern United States. This study suggested the following investigation which was undertaken to determine more specifically the effects …

A Measurement Of The Spin Relaxation Time Of Optically Pumped Rubidium Vapor, Robert Oliver Breault Jun 1964

A Measurement Of The Spin Relaxation Time Of Optically Pumped Rubidium Vapor, Robert Oliver Breault

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Atomic Energy Levels

In 1949 Francis Bitter proposed a method for optcally detecting radio frequency resonance. That same year Alfred Kastler, Fcole Normale Superiéure, Paris, France, introduced a technique, which he called "Optical Pumping", of concentrating atoms in some of the Zeeman sublevels of one of the hyperfine state levels of the ground state. These two experiments are the basis of research involving optical methods of atomic orientation and of magnetic resonance.

The Effect Of Fiber Length And Degree Of Fibrillation On Water Removal By Wet Pressing, John C. Walkush Apr 1964

The Effect Of Fiber Length And Degree Of Fibrillation On Water Removal By Wet Pressing, John C. Walkush

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The amount of water ·in paper determines indirectly the strength of it by dictating what type of bonds are formed between fibers. The less water in paper the stronger it is. Wet pressing is considered in detail as one method of water removal to determine what factors affect the amount of water removal since this would indirectly affect the development of paper strength. Specifically, the effect of fiber length and the degree of fibrillation was studied. It was found that as fiber length decreases the amount of water that can be removed decreases and that as the degree of fibrillation …
