Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The functions of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, should form a solid foundation from which students can learn as they grow toward maturity in their educational endeavors. Without a proper grasp of those functions, a language imbalance occurs. One might say that the foundation tilts because the base is not sufficiently solid in each direction. As a result one or more language functions are slighted and may not mature sufficiently or may atrophy because of disuse.

The Living Together Arrangement: Social Work And The Lost Client, Robert W. Weinbach, Anne C. Blankenship, Sarah M. Friedman, Judy C. Rutledge, Claudia A. Thompson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A recent research study suggests that persons living together outside of marriage do not view social work services as a potential source of help for problems brought into the living together arrangement, those common to all intimate long-range dyadic relationships or those directly related to choice of lifestyle. A multi-faceted approach is suggested which would aim at reaching this potential client group in a climate which will neither stigmatize or judge the alternate lifestyle or the persons who practice it.

Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman
Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Few would question the appropriateness of oral reading in the first and second grades. Most experts feel that reading aloud is a worthwhile activity in the earliest years of school because the students have not yet developed sufficient speed in silent reading to make silent reading a valuable enterprise for them. Lewis and Sisko (1963) caution, however, that "from the time a child's silent reading rate overtakes his rate of oral reading, usually during the second or third grade, too much oral reading has the adverse effect of slowing down the rate of silent reading and encouraging unnecessary lip movement, …

Each clearinghouse is responsible for obtaining the educational literature within its area for evaluation, indexing, and abstracting into the ERIC data bank, and also for providing information analysis materials and various user services based on the information contained in ERIC. Transcripts of speeches, topical papers, program descriptions, inservice and preservice workshop materials, curriculum guides, research reports, conference proceedings, and educational journal articles are among the documents indexed in the ERIC system.
