The New Left And The Human Service Professions, Robert J. S. Ross
The New Left And The Human Service Professions, Robert J. S. Ross
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
There are three characteristics of the New Left which had impact on social and human service professionals. Egalitarianism produced distrustof orthodox professional detachment from and power over poor and minority persons. The movement also gave expression to guilt, for some, over their "privileged" backgrounds. The New Left's decentralist views about power produced an orientation to local insurgency: the organization of neighborhood and community activist organizations. In combination, for those influenced by the movement and entering the professions, a characteristic type of new professionalism arose: advocacy for the interests and organizations of the oppressed. Illustrations of this process are found in …

Temperature Dependence Of The Retention Of Organic Fines Using A Cationic Retention Aid, Danny R. Mcrae
Temperature Dependence Of The Retention Of Organic Fines Using A Cationic Retention Aid, Danny R. Mcrae
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Stock of 50:50 bleached Kraft softwood and hardwood run through the Valley beater at 350 CSF with high fines content (25-30% fines from softwood and hardwood fractions run through a Wiley mill) was prepared and tested for fines fractionation, fines retention, and system surface charge at 10, 25, 40, and 55°C using a Dow Chemical cationic polymer of 1,000,000 molecular weight: SEPARAN CP-7. The Britt Dynamic Drainage Jar was used for fines fractionation and retention data and Halabisky's Colloid Titration Technique for surface charge data. Cationic polymer loadings were taken at 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 pounds of polymer per ton …

Children's Literature And The Classroom Teacher, Lucetta A. Johnson
Children's Literature And The Classroom Teacher, Lucetta A. Johnson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The elementary teacher may well ask why teach children's literature when each day's schedule is already crowded with mathematics, reading, spelling, English, science, social studies, physical education, art, music, values, career awareness, and all subjects that come under these broad headings. This article will suggest some ways that children's literature can be used in the elementary curriculum to achieve reading goals that improve on traditional reading programs. Children's literature in no way replaces these programs, rather, it extends and enriches the reading curriculum while encouraging positive reading attitudes.

"Women Artists: for Children" is a collection of slides, tapes and life-sized dolls that introduces women in the visual arts to third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. The body of this paper presents the four sets of narratives that accompany the individual slide series; "Women Painters", "Women Fiber Artists", "Women Sculptors", and "Women Printmakers". It also includes a discussion of how and why the project came about, a general introduction to the styles and themes of the artists it presents and a brief analysis of its experimental exposure in the classroom.
