Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Because most states now require that all prospective teachers must have formal instruction in the teaching of reading in order to qualify for certification, the reading teacher must be prepared (1) to justify the requirement and (2) to teach the sort of course which will be valuable to students in a broad diversity of subject areas. In the article which follows. Professor Billie Jo Rieck of West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia offers a workable method for presenting the required course in the teaching of reading to the broad variety of students who pass through it. Professor …

Initiating Assessment Of Student Needs In Content Areas, Jerry L. Johns
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As students move through the elementary grades they encounter more and more reading in the content areas: social studies, science, mathematics, and English. Most teachers are aware of the burden that vocabulary and concept load place upon each student's ability to understand what he/she has read. Although teachers usually group students according to reading ability to facilitate basal reading instruction, there is often little or no effort expended to meet individual or group reading needs in the content areas. One reason for this neglect may be that teachers lack systematic ways of assessing students' mastery of the technical vocabulary in …

Interdisciplinary Study: The Ideal And The Real, W. J. Reeves
Perspectives (1969-1979)
This study will examine the various interdisciplinary programs in operation in major universities, focusing on the methods of organization and detailing the problems of existence of such programs.
There are many ways to organize interdisciplinary programs, but the following methods appear most often:
1. Significant Time Periods
2. Area Studies
3 . Humanities and the Professions
4. Topics
A description of these methods is necessary.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Career education thus provides a framework that can make reading experiences vital and meaningful. Reading, as Brickell (1975) suggests, is "the only skill that will be used in every job, the only skill that can free the mind and put bread on the table" (p. 6). If his comments appear to be zealously stated, they nevertheless serve to amplify the reading-career education connection. For the vast majority of students reading is and will continue to be the most efficient vehicle for learning. It can serve as the prime tool for exploring the world of work and in sharpening the thinking …

The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann
The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Discussions of personal influence in situations in communities and organizations are ordinarily abstract and theoretical. In this paper, a practical method for the measurement of influence in interactional terms is developed. The approach combines the use of Likert scales, sociometric techniques and a simplified version of "blockmodeling" using mathematical matrices. The method is outlined using a hypothetical social service agency with a seven-member staff.

A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks
A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks
Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to: (1) Identify and explore the non-science majors' attitudes toward science; (2) Use the results of the investigation to design a course to be used by instructors of Earth and Space Science.
Two major instruments were developed to collect data for the study. The first was an Attitude Inventory and the second was a Course Content Inventory. A major goal of the Attitude Inventory was to collect data with which to develop an Attitude Index which could be used to predict those non-science majors who have some "negative" attitudes toward science. The course design …
An Application Of Infrared Spectroscopy To The Study Of Binder Migration In Paper Coatings, Fred E. Huang
An Application Of Infrared Spectroscopy To The Study Of Binder Migration In Paper Coatings, Fred E. Huang
Masters Theses
Multiple internal reflectance (MIR) was used to study binder migration of paper coatings. Casein and an acrylic latex were selected as binders because of their characteristic infrared absorption bands. The coatings analyzed were prepared on the Western Michigan University Pilot Coater using the airknife coating method at different coating speeds. A surface grinder was used to obtain several layers of coating for surface studies.
It was concluded that the MIR technique could satisfactorily be used in the binder migration studies. Its success mainly depends on the precision of surface grinding, caliper measurement and infrared characteristics of the binders. The results …

Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull
Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull
Honors Theses
Nitric oxide is a major air pollutant arising from fossil fuel combustion, yet the fuel contribution to its formulation is uncertain. Since, in combustion, fossil fuels undergo disintegration before oxidation takes place, the study of the pyrolsis of a model constituent of fossil fuels can shed light on NO formation. The rate of inert pyrolytic disappearance of pyridine and the rate of formation of the principal Nitrogen-containing pyrolytic product, HCN, was studied in an inert atmosphere. The rate constant for the formation of HCN and its temperature dependence were determined.

The Crucial Transition Years, Leonard Courtney
The Crucial Transition Years, Leonard Courtney
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Three important years sculpted from a child's formal schooling, islanded as a period of guided passage from childhood to youth. Such is an ideal framework, unfortunately inconsistent with the actuality of the junior high years. Nonetheless, anyone who has worked closely with children of this age (11-14) or grades (7-9) acknowledge an array of differences physical, psychological and emotional which mandates a setting uniquely sympathetic to the pupils' needs. If for no other reason, junior high exists for the exceptional reading opportunity it provides: for intensification and diversification of skills, some ease and stability in dealing with varying content structures, …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In the article which follows, Evelyn Hill, principal of Gertrude Ealy Elementary School in the West Bloomfield School District of Birmingham, Michigan, suggests specific ways in which the elementary school administrator can promote the reading program within his/her school. Ms. Hill provides sensible suggestions which any elementary school administrator should find rather easy and practical to apply.

The Effect Of Secondary Fiber Furnish On The Tensile Energy Absorption Capacity Of Paper Under Repeated Extension Cycles, James Patton
The Effect Of Secondary Fiber Furnish On The Tensile Energy Absorption Capacity Of Paper Under Repeated Extension Cycles, James Patton
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The object of this study was to determine what effect does recycling paper have on the tensile energy absorption (TEA) of that paper. The TEA of the sheet was split into two components, the elastic and the plastic. The sum of the two components gives the composite TEA.
The TEA's were measured at three different numbers of extension-cycles. It was found that a greater number of extension cycles resulted in greater TEA's for both elastic and plastic regions.
It was discovered that elastic TEA does not decrease with the first or second degree of recycling. Plastic TEA suffers its greatest …
