Deinking Of Paper Using A Water Solvent Emulsion System, Archie Cameron Jr. Jun 1980

Deinking Of Paper Using A Water Solvent Emulsion System, Archie Cameron Jr.

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study examines the use of a solvent and water emulsion to deink waste paper. Solvents looked at in detail included napthalene and paradichlorobenzene. Various grades of waste paper were tested for deinkability including, coated and heavily printed magazine cover stock, plastic coated SES board, beer case stock with hotmelts, uncoated and unfilled stock printed with a neutral black ink, old corrigating medium filled with hotmelts and stickies, and finally, board printed with UV-cured inks. Most of these samples deinked very well.

Brightness and appearance were the basis for measuring deinkability. Yield was also tabulated for selected experiments. As a …

Application Of A Kraft Mill Mathematical Model Of A Pdp-11, Deborah A. Larsen Jun 1980

Application Of A Kraft Mill Mathematical Model Of A Pdp-11, Deborah A. Larsen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The need to estimate the effects of a design or operating change in kraft pulping and recovery processes has resulted in the development of a working mathematical model. This model is a series of equations which evaluate significant chemical flows and losses, cooking rates and process economics. Through careful application to a PDP-11 computer system, this model is available for economic evaluation of process changes to improve pulp quality. The information necessary to start up, run and understand the data is covered along with discussion of the history of the development of mathematical modelling.

Variables Influencing The Filtration Of Water Through Paper, Daniel J. Geddes Apr 1980

Variables Influencing The Filtration Of Water Through Paper, Daniel J. Geddes

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

When water is filtered through paper under constant pressure, the flow rate decreases with time, even if distilled water is used as the permeating fluid. On the basis of previous literature,·possible causes of this effect were thought to be fiber swelling, the presence of microscopic bubbles in the water, electrical forces, or structures formed by water molecules and ionic impurities.

Experimentation showed that there is a blocking agent present in the distilled water which causes the decrease in flow rate. These particulate agents are denser than water, and have a greater affinity for cellulose than for glass. The particulates have …

The Use Of Hydrophobic Plastics As Ink Collectors During Deinking Of News Waste, Brian L. Pahl Apr 1980

The Use Of Hydrophobic Plastics As Ink Collectors During Deinking Of News Waste, Brian L. Pahl

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The following study reports the performance of polyethylene and polystyrene in two different forms as ink collectors during deinking. Following a brief case history of conventional deinking and a detailed discussion of deinking with plastic as an ink collector, many variables affecting this process are analyzed. Although the results were somewhat eratic, some generalizations can be made. The polystyrene in the porous form provided maximum ink removal. This can be attributed to its ability to retain adsorbed ink particles. Regardless of the system used, ink removal increased with additional collector surface area. Nevertheless, some re-dispersion of ink particles was evident …

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to validate a programmed text which was designed and written by the experimenter. Subjects in Group A, in Phase 1 of the experiment, were seven male and five female volunteers either working or enrolled as students in human service fields. Subjects in Group B, in Phase 2, were six females and four male graduate students enrolled in the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse treatment seminar at Western Michigan University. Group A completed the programmed text exercises in Behavioral Counseling for Alcohol-Related Problems, designed and written by the experimenter. The programmed text was …

A Discrete-Trial Choice Procedure And The Psychophysics Of Amount Of Reinforcement: A Preliminary Analysis, Frans Van Haaren Apr 1980

A Discrete-Trial Choice Procedure And The Psychophysics Of Amount Of Reinforcement: A Preliminary Analysis, Frans Van Haaren

Dissertations

A discrete-trial choice procedure, in which pigeons were exposed to one constant and one variable duration of reinforcement, was used to assess the effects of session-by-session manipulations in the variable reinforcement duration on the choice behavior of the subjects. Two groups of pigeons were used. Each subject in the first group was exposed to the same constant reinforcement duration (1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 sec), but different fixed-ratio trial completion requirements (5, 15 and 45). The subjects in the second group were exposed to all three different constant reinforcement durations while the trial completion requirement was kept constant with a variable-interval …

Game Preferences Of Delinquent And Non-Delinquent Boys, Shraga Serok, Arthur Blum Mar 1980

Game Preferences Of Delinquent And Non-Delinquent Boys, Shraga Serok, Arthur Blum

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Viewing delinquency as unsocializized behavior and games as a mini-life social situation demanding social conformity, it was predicted that differences would be found between delinquent and non-delinquent boys in their preferences for types of games. Fifty delinquent and fifty non-delinquent boys were studied and findings indicate that: 1) delinquents show greater preference for games of chance and non-delinquents for games of strategy, and 2) delinquents prefer games with low rule specificity and high opportunity for the direct expression of agression, while non-delinquents prefer games with the opposite characteristics.

An area of major neglect in the massive literature on juvenile delinquency …

Procedures For The Maintenance And Generalization Of Achieved Behavioral Change, John S. Wodarski Mar 1980

Procedures For The Maintenance And Generalization Of Achieved Behavioral Change, John S. Wodarski

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Procedures for the maintenance and generalization of achieved behavioral change in anti-social adolescents are reviewed. A review of follow-up studies which provides the rationale for the incorporation of such procedures in practice is initially elaborated. Specific items discussed are possible avenues to the maintenance and generalization of behavior: social networks, peers, and parents; training socially relevant behaviors; changing the conditions of training; gradually removing or fading the contingencies; delayed reinforcement; and self control procedures. Throughout the manuscript relevant case illustrations are reviewed.

The History And Promise Of Formal Survey Analysis For Social Work, Duncan Lindsey Mar 1980

The History And Promise Of Formal Survey Analysis For Social Work, Duncan Lindsey

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Since its inception social work has struggled with determining the function and status of research in the professional enterprise. The emergence of professional social work was concurrent with the major developments in the methodology of empirical social research and statistical analysis. To understand the current position of research in social work requires tracing back the origins of empirical research with special attention to its connection with the emergence of the social work profession.

The efforts of the survey movement represent the first major attempt to introduce research methodology into the field of social work (Zimbalist, 1977; Young, 1949). In the …
