Medium Modified Proton Densities Deduced From Electron Scattering Experiments, Steven Paul Deryke Apr 1986

Medium Modified Proton Densities Deduced From Electron Scattering Experiments, Steven Paul Deryke

Masters Theses

Recently two fundamental problems in nuclear physics have been resolved by applying the concept of nucleon size increases over that of free nucleons. These successes have encouraged the use of medium-modified proton densities to explain the differences between Hartree-Fock calculations and experimental charge densities. These differences constituted a long standing problem in nuclear physics.

The covariant soliton model of density dependent nucleon form factors was employed to explain these differences. This model predicts a non-linear relationship between point proton densities and charge densities. This work was able to provide a self-consistent proton density for 208Pb by inverting this relationship. …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Bentonite As A Soil Additive For The Cover Material On The Kl Avenue Sanitary Landfill, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Neal J. Carey Apr 1986

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Bentonite As A Soil Additive For The Cover Material On The Kl Avenue Sanitary Landfill, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Neal J. Carey

Masters Theses

A principle objective of using bentonite as a soil additive is to reduce the permeability of a cover material, thus, inhibiting the infiltration of surface waters at landfill sites.

Twenty-two cores of the KL landfill were taken to obtain in-situ soil columns for testing. Coefficients of permeability were calculated for each soil column using the falling-head permeameter. Mechanical and hydrometer analyses were used for the grain size analysis. The methylene-blue test was employed to determine the actual percentages of bentonite present in each soil column. X-ray diffraction work was done on the clay fraction of each soil column to verify …

A Query Optimization Method For Use In A Generalized Database, Caroline D. Mautz Apr 1986

A Query Optimization Method For Use In A Generalized Database, Caroline D. Mautz

Masters Theses

Currently proposed methods for retrieval of records from a generalized file organization are not optimal, causing more I\0 retrievals than are necessary. This paper proposes another technique that has near optimal results and has a polynomial order of complexity.

The technique takes as input a query in disjunctive form, sorts the keys in the query in ascending order according to the number of records associated with them, then using a table much like a prime implicant table, systematically searches for a complete cover of the query conjuncts with a minimum total number of records associated with the keys that are …

Simultaneous Knudsen- And Torsion-Effusion Measurements Of The Vapor Pressures Of Triphenyl Aluminum And Triphenyl Boron, Steven Wayne Govorchin Apr 1986

Simultaneous Knudsen- And Torsion-Effusion Measurements Of The Vapor Pressures Of Triphenyl Aluminum And Triphenyl Boron, Steven Wayne Govorchin

Masters Theses

The sublimation pressures of triphenyl aluminum and triphenyl boron have been determined from simultaneous measurements of the rate of mass effusion and torsional recoil. For triphenyl aluminum the measured vapor presures are expressed by the equations:

logio (Pk/P°) = (12.76 ± 1.25) - (8214 ± 572) (K/T)

logio (Pt/p °) = (12.83 ± 1.34) - (8206 ± 615) (K/T)

where Pk and Pt are the pressures measured by the Knudsen-effusion and torsional-recoil techniques, respectively, and p° = 101.325 kPa. For triphenyl boron the measured vapor pressures are expressed by the equations:

log …

Technology, Corporate Mobility, And A Decline In Urban Services, Marcus D. Pohlmann Mar 1986

Technology, Corporate Mobility, And A Decline In Urban Services, Marcus D. Pohlmann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Technological changes have produced a postindustrial economy which has both facilitated and encouraged the flight of capital and well-to-do people from the older industrial cities. Left in their wake are increasing levels of unemployment, poverty, and crime. Service needs have Increased accordingly, but at a time when these cities have not only smaller tax bases but also less electoral clout with which to acquire additional financial assistance at the state and federal levels. In a nearly futile attempt to reestablish a healthy degree of private investment in their cities, municipal governments let service levels decline and focus on spurring capital …

Applying Computers To Clinical Social Work, James Gripton, Paul Licker, Leo De Groot Mar 1986

Applying Computers To Clinical Social Work, James Gripton, Paul Licker, Leo De Groot

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper discusses the application of computer technology to clinical social work. It is based on a three-year research and demonstration project on microcomputer applications to clinical social work. The paper reviews the use of computers in social work, contrasting the developments in this field with those that hove occurred in psychiatry and clinical psychology. It then describes the two major components of the integrated software package for supporting clinical social work that has been developed and is currently being tested. The paper concludes with a discussion of the misconceptions and realities of introducing computer technology to a clinical social …

Introduction To Thematic Special Issue, John T. Pardeck, John W. Murphy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Currently technology is proliferating at a rate never before imagined. As a result, every facet of society has changed because of technological developments, including the delivery of social services. Although there is much debate over whether or not these changes are good or bad, they cannot be denied (Murphy and Pardeck, forthcoming). In fact, Jacques Ellul ( 1964: 127) has referred to modern society as a technological civilization. What he means by this designation is not only that society is dependent upon technology for its survival, but, more importantly, technological rationality has come to determine how persons view themselves and …

Technology, Stress, And Family Violence: Some Issues In Teaching Social Work Practice, Shirley J. Porter Mar 1986

Technology, Stress, And Family Violence: Some Issues In Teaching Social Work Practice, Shirley J. Porter

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines family violence. Specifically, the variables most often associated with this phenomenon are discussed. As part of this analysis, a model for assessing family violence is proposed. It is noted, however, that this mode of assessment differs in many ways from technologically oriented methodologies. Moreover, the social work profession must come to recognize the difference between community sensitive and technological models, or misinformed social policies may be the result.

Social Service Delivery Systems: The Impact Of Technology And Organizational Structure, Louella Mann Mar 1986

Social Service Delivery Systems: The Impact Of Technology And Organizational Structure, Louella Mann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Changes in work and social structures are reviewed for the period from the early industrial era to the present. Work structure is hypothesized to have a significant impact upon society and the individual. The structure of the modern work setting and the rapid changes in technology have increased the stress associated with anxiety and isolation. In turn, these problems contribute to the onset of social ills. Also examined are ways to diminish the negative effects of the role conflict which results from the divergent structures present in the personal and work settings. Predictions about the future of social service delivery …

Honors Theses

The Statistical Analysis Project is a computer program that interacts with a person to discover the type of statistical test that person should use. Essentially, this program is intended to assist students, faculty and researchers in choosing the correct statistical procedure to use in a particular situation. For example, there are many different types of tests a person can use to test the mean of data but each test is used in a different situation. This program will tell you which test to use based on the situation you give it. This project was started by Anika Forsblad in 1985.

Continuing Professional Education For Teachers And Its Relationship To Teacher Effectiveness, Gregory Allen Knoblock Dec 1985

Continuing Professional Education For Teachers And Its Relationship To Teacher Effectiveness, Gregory Allen Knoblock

Dissertations

In this study, the relationship between continuing education for the teacher and that teacher's effectiveness as measured by an achievement test and an evaluative measure completed by the teacher's students is investigated. The importance that number of hours, currentness, and subject area has upon any relationship with effectiveness, and the relationship between motivation for entry into and satisfaction with graduate/postgraduate work are also studied.

Data necessary to test these relationships were obtained from two sources: a survey of mathematics teachers in Macomb County, Michigan, and the results from two student instruments randomly administered to the classes of those teachers volunteering …

On Common Subgraphs, Hung Bin Zou

Dissertations

A greatest common (induced) subgraph of graphs G(,1) and G(,2) of equal size is a (an induced) common subgraph (without isolated vertices) of G(,1) and G(,2) having maximum size. For a given graph L, a graph G is locally L if the induced subgraph of the neighborhood of each vertex of G is isomorphic to L (L is called a common link). Several topics concerning these concepts are investigated in this dissertation. An historical background to these topics is given in Chapter I.

Chapter II is devoted to the topic on highly connected unique greatest common subgraphs of graphs. We …

Feminist Theory And Social Policy Or Why Is Welfare So Hard To Reform?, Dorothy C. Miller Dec 1985

Feminist Theory And Social Policy Or Why Is Welfare So Hard To Reform?, Dorothy C. Miller

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

More than 10 years ago Henry Aaron wrote a classic paper entitled "Why Is Welfare So Hard to Reform?" (1973). This paper answers that question from the perspective of the new discipline of Women's Studies. The author suggests that the use of feminist theories; notably those of Hartsock and Chodorow; can further one's recognition and understanding of male bias in social policy development. Tracing the history of U.S. welfare policies for women and children the analysis provides explanations for the differential treatment of women in the welfare system and the failure of work strategies to increase poor women's economic independence. …

Reactions Of Supercritical Water With Quinoline And Related Compounds, Zhuangjie Li Dec 1985

Reactions Of Supercritical Water With Quinoline And Related Compounds, Zhuangjie Li

Masters Theses

One function which coal processing can perform is the removal of heteroatoms to yield a less polluting product. The removal of nitrogen atoms from the model compounds quinoline and aniline, which are believed to be representative of the nitrogen functional groups found in coal, was studied using supercritical water (SW) as the fluid. Water at these conditions serves as a reactant, helping to promote the rupture of the heterocyclic ring and in the removal of nitrogen attached to an aromatic ring. Heterocyclic ring rupture leads to the formation of several methylated products, methyl and dimethyl anilines, phenols and quinolines. The …
