"Intensive Phonics vs. Gradual Phonics in Beginning Reading: A Review" which appeared in the April 1965 issue of The Journal of Educational Research? This review presents 22 comparisons between intensive phonics instruction and gradual phonics instruction. It differs from standard reviews in two respects. First, it restricts itself to comparisons meeting certain rigorous statistical criteria and gives specific reasons for excluding various less rigorous studies. Second, instead of quoting the conclusions of various investigators, it tabulates their findings in terms of significant differences. The reviewers found that 19 comparisons favored intensive phonics, three favored neither method, and none favored gradual …

Social Distance Attitudes Of College Students Toward Three Minority Groups, Dennison W. Nichols
Social Distance Attitudes Of College Students Toward Three Minority Groups, Dennison W. Nichols
Masters Theses
Introduction
This study is an endeavor to add to the already existing scientific information in regard to man's social relations with his fellow men. More exactly, the purposes of this research are: (1) to gain a better understanding of prejudice among college students toward both stereotype images and "real" described persons belonging to the Jewish minority, the Negro minority and the homosexual minority, (2) to explore the possibility of their being a relationship between social-distance attitudes of these students toward these minorities and the personal, economic and certain other factors influencing these students, and (3) to consider the significance of …

"The Human Dimension in Teaching" by Ernest R. Hilgard, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University? This thought-provoking article was published in the College and University Bulletin of the Association for Higher Education, March 15, 1965. We heartily recommend that present and future teachers read this discussion of teaching and another, "What Does It Mean to Teach?" by Edgar Dale, The News Letter of Ohio State University, March 1965.

The article, "Relative Importance of Intelligence and Visual Perception in Predicting Reading Achievement," by Quentin R. Bryan published in the California Journal of Educational Research for 1964? The study concludes that "visual perception appears to have relatively more weight than intelligence and reading readiness in predicting reading success in the first grade."

Those of us who are unapologetically devoted to the cause of correct English are not necessarily so hopelessly oldfogyish as some of the "scientific" popularizers of linguistics take us to be. We are not harking back to any imaginary "good old days." Some of us would say unhesitatingly that the best English of today, all things considered, is the best there ever was. We are not disposed, how ever, to accept blithely on the ground of "usage" just any sort of careless confusion or ignorant corruption merely because it has considerable currency. Indeed, one may well contend that there is …

Little Things Can Make Reading Easier, Louis Foley
Little Things Can Make Reading Easier, Louis Foley
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In recent years, specialists in linguistics have become increasingly aware of a fundamental reason for poor reading. That is the reading of words one by one, instead of promptly recognizing their grouping, the patterns in which they are joined, or in other words sentence structure. The way a person reads orally seems to be a reliable indication of how he reads silently, for as a leading authority has remarked, "it is not likely that a word-caller in oral reading will read silently by language structures."* so it should be easy to determine in any case whether this basic fault is …

An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between reading disability and defective articulation. An attempt has been made to determine whether or not children with functionally defective articulation have difficulty in reading.
It is conceivable that a deficiency in one or several areas of language development might impede or retard a child's academic achievement and might interfere with his emotional adjustment. This study was, therefore, undertaken, first to determine whether or not there is a difference in the reading ability of speech defective children as determined by valid and reliable measures, and the reading ability of …
Specific Language Disability As Related To Clinical Failure In Public School Speech Therapy, G. Lorraine Hansen
Specific Language Disability As Related To Clinical Failure In Public School Speech Therapy, G. Lorraine Hansen
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Background of the Problem
Introduction. The term language as used in this thesis refers to the complex symbolic processes of speaking, reading, and writing. Speech is the primary process of language. Reading and writing are secondary processes formed by written symbols which reflect the primary symbols of speech. Due to the integral relationship of these elements, a facility or disability in one might affect the others. If this is true, then it might also be possible that one currently existing factor could affect the entire area of language including any, or all, of the interrelated processes. It is …

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)
Faculty Publications 1957-61 is the first major compilation of the publications of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Compilations like this one are not unique. Nearly all the major universities, as well as many of the smaller institutions of higher education, have prepared them for a number of years. It seemed reasonable, when the enterprise was first planned, for Western Michigan University to publish the compilation as one of the Faculty Contributions of the School of Graduate Studies.
