The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green
The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Anthropology contributes to the education of social work students through its emphasis on the role of culture and of social context in the delivery of social services. Examples are provided with special emphasis on child abuse and protective services. While anthropology has traditionally been associated with the study of minorities, its role in the critique of other social work concerns is suggested.

Measurement Of Teacher Knowledge Of Reading, H.L. Narang
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The latest trend in teacher education is towards competency- based programs which focus on the specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes that teachers ought to develop in order to perform well on the job. One area of teacher competencies is knowledge of the subject-matter. Cooper (1973) calls this knowledge competency. Several writers have emphasized the mastery of subject-matter as an important component in teacher preparation. Bush (1954) says that students like teachers whom they regard as high in knowledge of subject; and pupil liking of teachers is related to pupil liking for the subject. Miller and Miller (1971) asked school adminstrators …

Some Thoughts On Interdisciplinary Studies, Sidney F. Parham, Peter W. Graham
Some Thoughts On Interdisciplinary Studies, Sidney F. Parham, Peter W. Graham
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The vogue for interdisciplinary courses has led our more crusty and conservative colleagues to complain that such programs represent a mere repackaging of traditional courses, a process that diminishes the value the student receives from traditional courses without broadening or integrating his knowledge. Too often this criticism is just. We should like to argue that a genuinely interdisciplinary approach does not repackage but restructures knowledge in such a way that students are led to consider the nature of knowledge itself and thus, we hope, to think about their own thinking. Such reflection seems to us a decidely traditional goal of …

The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann
The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Discussions of personal influence in situations in communities and organizations are ordinarily abstract and theoretical. In this paper, a practical method for the measurement of influence in interactional terms is developed. The approach combines the use of Likert scales, sociometric techniques and a simplified version of "blockmodeling" using mathematical matrices. The method is outlined using a hypothetical social service agency with a seven-member staff.

Understanding The Hypothesis, It's The Teacher That Makes The Difference: Part I, Jerome C. Harste
Understanding The Hypothesis, It's The Teacher That Makes The Difference: Part I, Jerome C. Harste
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Any explication of the essential components of an effective reading program will likely include a discussion of the teacher's role. Research findings have made it abundantly clear that the single most important element of an effective reading program is the regular classroom teacher. Many other factors are important, of course, but these research findings suggest pupil success or failure is most directly related to the "teacher variable" in the teaching of reading.

A Survey Of Reading Readiness Practice, Marie Carducci-Bolchazy
A Survey Of Reading Readiness Practice, Marie Carducci-Bolchazy
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Practices in reading readiness programs vary considerably (Spache & Spache, 1973). In some programs the emphasis is upon language development; in other programs the emphasis is upon perceptual1 and/or perceptual-motor training. In fact, in some programs (e.g., Kephart, 1960; Frostig, 1961), little or no attention is given to language development, and even in programs that have a language-development component, some emphasis on perceptual and/or perceptual-motor training is common.
