To Teach A Social Studies Concept--Chunk It!, Esther P. Valentine, Olive R. Francks
To Teach A Social Studies Concept--Chunk It!, Esther P. Valentine, Olive R. Francks
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
"I don't know why they couldn't answer the questions. We covered the subject in our social studies class. Besides, all the answers are in the textbook!"
Has such a thought ever passed through your mind as you looked with dismay at your class' test results? Unfortunately, this kind of reaction is common to the social studies teacher in our nation's classrooms. Difficulties in learning to read in content area subjects tend to baffle the teacher and present obstacles to the learner. All this can be overcome by a strategy which is based on knowledge of how a student learns to …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Children's Reading Miscues, Duane R. Tovey
Teachers' Perceptions Of Children's Reading Miscues, Duane R. Tovey
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many journal articles, scholarly reports and books have been published regarding miscues and the predictive/ communicative nature of the reading process. Few teachers, however, seem to be aware of these more recent research findings which hold highly significant implications for instruction. How many teachers are aware of the predictive/communicative nature of the reading process? How do they feel about reading behavior that does not process each word in a precise exacting manner? Unless teachers are aware of such concepts and incorporate them in their teaching, research efforts become inconsequential.

Black Students Get An Edge In Reading, Barbara C. Palmer, Lawrence E. Hafner
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The purpose of this article is not so much to report that minority children are having trouble in learning to read all kinds of children are for that matter·· but to point out that with the proper kind of instruction black children can do as well as other children. Consider briefly the findings of a few research studies documenting contentions about the reading acquisition problems that numbers of black children have.
Inferential Aspects Of The Cloze Task, Michael C. Mckenna
Inferential Aspects Of The Cloze Task, Michael C. Mckenna
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The central assumption underlying the cloze procedure is that context can be used inferentially to predict deleted words (or other graphic units). The importance of this assumption suggests that an adequate understanding of the cloze task is impossible without an analytical knowledge of the role inference must play. The present discussion embodies a stepwise analysis of this role, from the point at which the context is read to the point at which the reader is able to distinguish acceptable responses.

Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker
Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Over the past decade, increasing interest has been shown in the implications of psycholinguistics for understanding the reading process. Mainly through the work of Goodman (1969; 1970) and Smith (1971; 1975), linguistic and psychological knowledge have been combined to describe the reading process of mature readers and the process through which children learn to read. The educational implications of this psycholinguistic model have been largely concerned with the learning-to-read process of elementary school children. But significant implications for secondary developmental reading instruction arc suggested as well. It is the purpose of this paper to identify and explore some of these …
Beginning Reading Without Readiness: Structured Language Experience, Patricia Cunningham
Beginning Reading Without Readiness: Structured Language Experience, Patricia Cunningham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The language experience approach has for generations been one of the tricks in the bags of versatile reading teachers. Allen (1964) emphasizes the link between speaking. writing and reading inherent in the language experience approach. Hall (1972) supplies seven statements supporting the linguistic soundness of the language experience approach.

Professional Concerns, R Baird Shuman, Willliam S. Palmer
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
William S. Palmer is Professor of Reading and Language Arts at the University of NC?rth Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is well known for his contributions to professional journals in the field of reading and English education. He is author of Teaching Reading to High School Students.
In his contribution to this column, Professor Palmer points out some of the oversimplication which results from basing reading programs upon the taxonomic model. He carefully explores the stages of beginning reading, and he sets these in a useful historical perspective. In doing so, he avoids the Aristotelian either/or dichotomy in his …

Children's Recognition Of Words In Isolation And In Context, Patrick Groff
Children's Recognition Of Words In Isolation And In Context, Patrick Groff
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The extent to which young children use, or should use sentence contexts as cues to word recognition is an unsettled issue. It is clear, on the one hand, that there are inherent limitations in this cue system to its successful use for this purpose (Groff, 1975). Also, the notion that beginning readers "have little else on which to rely" for word recognition except context cues, as offered by Karlin (1971, p. 145) has also been demonstrated as false. To the contrary, the research on word recognition suggests that these young children use letters as the main cues for word recognition …
Elements Of The Perpetuation Of Dependency In A Psychiatric Halfway House, David R. Maines, Marilyn A. Markowitz
Elements Of The Perpetuation Of Dependency In A Psychiatric Halfway House, David R. Maines, Marilyn A. Markowitz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Halfway houses are intended as helping institutions for those who are attempting to make the transition from institutionalized mental health facilities to autonomous living in the community. In spite of the manifest goal to produce independence for its residents, however, the halfway house contributes to patterns of dependency. In addition to the network nature of mental health care, we identify three dependency-perpetuating elements: role commitments, language, and mixed messages. These elements are analyzed as both social organizational and social psychological processes, and their implications are discussed.
