An Investigation Of Pitch Perturbation And Vocal Intensity Characteristics Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Carmen M. Bamberg
An Investigation Of Pitch Perturbation And Vocal Intensity Characteristics Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Carmen M. Bamberg
Masters Theses
Pitch and amplitude perturbation values were compared for nine adult stutterers and nine adult nonstutterers. Each subject produced ten sustained phonations of the vowels /a/ and /i/. An automatic pitch-synchronous autocorrelation fundamental frequency tracker was used to extract period and amplitude measures.
Findings revealed that: (a) stutterers had significantly more vocal shimmer than nonstutterers (p = .01), (b) F-ratios for percent jitter between groups approached (p = .07) but did not reach significance, and (c) the vowel /a/ was produced with higher levels of jitter and shimmer than the vowel /i/. Results support the notion that instability of the …
Analogical Processing Skills In Three Modalities In Fifth, Eighth, And Eleventh Graders, Amy Sirrae Cashen
Analogical Processing Skills In Three Modalities In Fifth, Eighth, And Eleventh Graders, Amy Sirrae Cashen
Masters Theses
This study examined the ability of fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders to complete multiple modality analogy tasks. Three groups, for a total of 201 subjects--68 fifth graders, 66 eighth graders, and 77 eleventh graders--solved word, picture, and figure analogies. A significant difference was found in the performance of the three groups, indicating that analogical processing skills increase with age. No significant difference was found between males and females on the combined analogy tasks. A significant difference was found for modality, indicating that the three sets of analogies were different in difficulty. The grade-by-modality interaction also was found to be significant, …
An Empirical Examination Of Hispanic-Americans In A University Setting And The Influences On Their Attitudes Towards Assimilation, Ramon Rodriguez
An Empirical Examination Of Hispanic-Americans In A University Setting And The Influences On Their Attitudes Towards Assimilation, Ramon Rodriguez
Masters Theses
Recent literature on Hispanic-Americans has determined that Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority in the United States. Both the high rates of immigration and a high birth rate mean it is only a matter of time before Hispanics will form an extensively large population. Hispanics, however, generally remain unassimilated. This study focuses on the influences on the attitudes towards assimilation of Hispanic-Americans in a university setting.
Survey methods were utilized to gather data from a sample of 100 individuals at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. A survey return rate of 57% was obtained from Hispanic students questioned. The data showed that …

Low-Income Parents' Attitudes Toward Parent Involvement In Education, Nancy Feyl Chavkin, David L. Williams Jr.
Low-Income Parents' Attitudes Toward Parent Involvement In Education, Nancy Feyl Chavkin, David L. Williams Jr.
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Using data from 978 parents who indicated their family income level on a descriptive survey about attitudes toward parent involvement in education, this article reports on comparisons among low-income, middle- income, and high-income parents. Despite some differences among the groups, the results clearly dispute any idea that low-income parents lack interest in their children's education. The authors provide recommendations of key strategies that social workers can use to facilitate effective involvement of low-income parents in their children's education.

Making Story Time A Literacy Event For The Young Child, Beth Weir
Making Story Time A Literacy Event For The Young Child, Beth Weir
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
A literacy event is "any action or sequence, involving one or more persons in which the production and/or comprehension of print plays a role" (Anderson, Teale & Estrada, 1980). Story reading by a parent or teacher is perhaps the single most effective literacy event in a young child's experience with written language. Increasingly, reports suggest children's development of skills associated with ease of reading acquisition are enhanced with regular readings of storybooks both prior to and concomitant with formal instruction.

Often, preservice teachers need to be reminded of the many influences on children's language. By reflecting on their own past language experiences, perhaps prospective teachers can better examine the important elements for language development.

Classroom Oral Reading And Its Needs Or Restraints, John H. Warren
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Few deny the beneficial effects of prose or poetry read aloud by a fluent and expressive reader; imparting reassurance, delivering entertainment, dispensing information or explanation, arousing curiosity, diffusing inspiration (Trelease, 1982). Apart from these advantages as we shall see, oral reading has the capability to engender literacy among individuals, more particularly our schoolchildren (Hoffman, 1982).
