The Social Sciences In General Education, Bobby G. Bell
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Proponents of general education maintain that every person is worthy of an education that is most general. Translated into a formal curriculum general education refers to that part of a student's education lying outside his area of specialization. Cultural and social literacy remain the dominant goals. Even though controversy surrounds the definition of general education and the philosophical approaches to its realization, the objective seems to be clear, that education "for an informed responsible life in our society" and "that part of a student's education which looks first of all to his life as a responsible human being and citizen." …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In reading for information our needs are often of a relatively transient kind. We look in our newspapers in order to find out what is on television tonight, we consult a specialised magazine in order to find out something about a carpet, a car, or a camera which we are thinking of buying next week, or we may, perhaps consult a geography text book in order to get relevant information about some area in which we are proposing to live. This paper, however, is primarily concerned with the information which we may want to remember for longer periods.

The Problem
Introduction
The traditional philosophy that a college-or a university is an exclusive institution in which only highly selected individuals receive a concentrated training in the traditional liberal arts no longer exists. In America, for instance, as early as 1870, Harvard, the colonial college with a narrow curriculum, was transformed rather rapidly into a modern university with many new subjects and the elective system (Garrett, 1949). Also, since 1642, when the first entrance requirements were instituted for American higher education, a continuing debate has developed over what constitutes a sound curriculum for education. There are those who …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
I would like to do three things: first, share with you a picture of libraries as they are now developing programs and planning for tomorrow's needs; present some specific examples of library services which relate to reading needs; finally, explore some examples of today's reading materials which I hope you as reading specialists either know about or with which you will become familiar, and which you and your clientele can obtain through library collections.
