The Development Of A New Organizational Pattern For An Elementary School In The Fruitport School District, John W. Carlson Aug 1970

The Development Of A New Organizational Pattern For An Elementary School In The Fruitport School District, John W. Carlson

Masters Theses

The development of an educational program that will meet the needs of all pupils is a goal that is sought by all educators. The needs of individual pupils will be met if such a goal is ever realized. Such a program, by appreciating the fact that each individual has a different rate and aptitude for learning, should help children of all ages and abilities achieve their full potential.

This case study follows the establishment of a nongraded flexibly scheduled, team taught elementary school from inception of the initial concept through the first year of operation. While it was impossible to …

Reading And Upward Bound-Another Look, Bruce A. Lloyd, Diane Griewank, Henri Carter

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The major purpose of summer Upward Bound instructional programs is to assist those high school students who have the potential for succeeding in a college or university, but who otherwise would probably not be given the opportunity to enter an institution of higher learning. The generally low academic achievement of many of these students is often due to a variety of factors including poor and ineffective teaching (1), lack of motivation (8), and an environment which is far from conducive to scholarly or academic pursuits. In sum, typical school activities tend to be less than relevant for many of these …

But How Does It Sound?, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In preparing for an eventual business or professional career, there is one basically important area which appears to be largely overlooked. Educators everywhere are perennially concerned with methods or devices for improving the teaching of reading, which is generally accepted as the most useful of all "tools" for continued learning. Prominent people in business and industry emphasize the importance of "communication," which is usually understood to be in the form of writing. Little attention seems to be given, however, to the elemental skill without which reading and writing must rest on a weak foundation: the ability to speak well. Schools …

A Look At Linguistic Readers, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Linguistics, as it relates to reading, has generated much interest lately among educators. Although linguistics is not a new science, its recent focus has captured the interest of the reading specialist because both the specialist and the linguist are concerned with language.

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers Mar 1970

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers

Honors Theses

During the seventeenth century, a legend grew among the French which claims that during the reign of Charles V of France, a group of industrious and daring sailors of Normandy sailed to northwest Africa and then into the unknown waters of West Africa. By 1383 these Normans had reached the Gold Coast and had established a flourishing trade with the people there. This story seems very remarkable because it was not until the mid-fifteenth century that the Portuguese, under the direction and guidance of Prince Henry, ventured for the first time into West African waters and not until 1*4-86 that they …

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 2 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting at Colgate University, October 30th through November 1st, 1969.

The elements of such a curriculum for man can be derived from the evidence of early childhood. Manual dexterity, social interaction, esthetic response, and linguistic capacity constitute four sources of spontaneous gratification in early life. If the student were taken as the integrating center of a curriculum composed of successively more complex forms of these four elements, permitting his own inductive capacities to lead him on from one level to the next, a form of education would emerge …
