Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Masters Theses
This is a study of the utilization of community mental health services by the Chicano population in a Western Michigan community. As members of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States, the Chicanos are faced with many of the same social ills that plague other minorities. Discrimination, benign neglect, oppression, exclusion by institutions, poverty, high crime rate, alcoholism, physical and emotional disorder, and social disorganization are part of the everyday world of the Chicano. The inherent cultural vehicles, which Chicano culture uses in order to deal with the stresses associated with these social pathologies, will be explored. …

The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green
The Role Of Cultural Anthropology In The Education Of Social Service Personnel, James W. Green
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Anthropology contributes to the education of social work students through its emphasis on the role of culture and of social context in the delivery of social services. Examples are provided with special emphasis on child abuse and protective services. While anthropology has traditionally been associated with the study of minorities, its role in the critique of other social work concerns is suggested.
Avoiding Redundancy: Advanced Placement In Social Work Education, William A. Anderson
Avoiding Redundancy: Advanced Placement In Social Work Education, William A. Anderson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Redundancy between graduate and undergraduate social work education is a waste of both program and student time and resources. Graduate programs have several alternative methods for decreasing redundancy, and some of the advantages and disadvantages of three such methods are considered here. After briefly presenting the historical development of the advanced placement issue and identifying the primary goals of undergraduate social work education, a model is given which links the three most common forms of advanced placement. Advanced placements based upon measured student knowledge and skills (outcome method), undergraduate course offerings (content method), and graduation from an accredited undergraduate program …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Because most states now require that all prospective teachers must have formal instruction in the teaching of reading in order to qualify for certification, the reading teacher must be prepared (1) to justify the requirement and (2) to teach the sort of course which will be valuable to students in a broad diversity of subject areas. In the article which follows. Professor Billie Jo Rieck of West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia offers a workable method for presenting the required course in the teaching of reading to the broad variety of students who pass through it. Professor …
Initiating Assessment Of Student Needs In Content Areas, Jerry L. Johns
Initiating Assessment Of Student Needs In Content Areas, Jerry L. Johns
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As students move through the elementary grades they encounter more and more reading in the content areas: social studies, science, mathematics, and English. Most teachers are aware of the burden that vocabulary and concept load place upon each student's ability to understand what he/she has read. Although teachers usually group students according to reading ability to facilitate basal reading instruction, there is often little or no effort expended to meet individual or group reading needs in the content areas. One reason for this neglect may be that teachers lack systematic ways of assessing students' mastery of the technical vocabulary in …

Some Thoughts On Interdisciplinary Studies, Sidney F. Parham, Peter W. Graham
Some Thoughts On Interdisciplinary Studies, Sidney F. Parham, Peter W. Graham
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The vogue for interdisciplinary courses has led our more crusty and conservative colleagues to complain that such programs represent a mere repackaging of traditional courses, a process that diminishes the value the student receives from traditional courses without broadening or integrating his knowledge. Too often this criticism is just. We should like to argue that a genuinely interdisciplinary approach does not repackage but restructures knowledge in such a way that students are led to consider the nature of knowledge itself and thus, we hope, to think about their own thinking. Such reflection seems to us a decidely traditional goal of …
Effective Ways Of Building Vocabulary In Every Content Area, Donald C. Cushenbery
Effective Ways Of Building Vocabulary In Every Content Area, Donald C. Cushenbery
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
One of the important responsibilities of any teacher at any level is that of planning a sequential program of vocabulary development in each and every area of the curriculum. Vocabulary enlargement must be seen as being a part of the major language arts curriculum of every school in all content departments. All teaching which deals with oral and written words involves concept formation and hence additional words and phrases with their attendant meanings.

Born Again (New Life And Hope For Liberal Arts Education), William A. Cook, James C. Gonyea
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Linwood Orange established the value of Liberal Arts study as the basis for entry into a variety of career areas: legal, medical, governmental, and commercial.1 Orange surveyed 400 businesses and industries to determine the kinds of positions liberal arts majors and, specifically, English majors held in those corporations. In addition, his questionnaire provided information on courses that would benefit liberal arts students should they hope to pursue careers in the commerce or governmental area. Fundamental to all employment indicated by this survey were ten (10) basic skills or competencies that seemed to be inherent in liberal arts study and …
