The Development Of A Curriculum Model For Undergraduate Education Of Manufacturing Engineers, Mark Allen Curtis
The Development Of A Curriculum Model For Undergraduate Education Of Manufacturing Engineers, Mark Allen Curtis
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to identify course work that could be used to develop a specific unified undergraduate curriculum in manufacturing engineering technology, that both satisfies existing academic constraints and thinking, as well as industry's desire for a practical, yet highly qualified engineer.
The population surveyed was a combination of educators and industrial people with a vested interest in manufacturing engineering, from across the United States. The survey results, rating the relative importance of ninety seven different courses, were used to develop a model undergraduate curriculum in manufacturing engineering.
The findings supported the original hypothesis by showing that …

The Use Of A Job Model With Self-Recording And Performance Information As An Alternative To On-Site Supervision, Mark Kevin Forbes
Masters Theses
The action goal of the study was to reduce performance deficits of relief employees who operated a Group Home, though use of a Job Model, self-recording, and performance information. The research goal was to ascertain if generalization occurred from performance accomplishments targeted by the intervention to accomplishments not targeted. Overall performance means increased over 34 percentage points for subjects following the Job model intervention and rose further after self-recording and feedback were introduced. The use of a partial Job Model resulted in performance improving or maintaining in five of six nontargeted accomplishments. When Subject A received the Job Model, self-recording, …
Parental Foraging In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Dora Elisa Perez
Parental Foraging In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Dora Elisa Perez
Masters Theses
During the breeding season of 1982, the population of Chipping Sparrows ( Spizella passerina) that inhabits the Western Michigan University's campus was chosen to study the use of foliage and other foraging sites. Three pairs were selected to be observed intensively.
During the time the female is foraging and when the male is either foraging or in territorial advertisement activities both sexes choose needleleaf trees out of proportion to their availability.
It is also likely that in the later stages of caring for young, when food demands were highest, the birds become less selective and forage on needleleaf trees as …
Women And Voluntary Blood Donation, Ernie S. Lightman
Women And Voluntary Blood Donation, Ernie S. Lightman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study explores the patterns of and motivations for voluntary blood donation by men and women in Toronto, Canada. Examining social systems with differently structured opportunities for altruism illustrates both the influence of the sex-role differential on altruism, and also the impact of these social structures upon sex-role behaviour.
Data are drawn from a postal questionnaire completed by a random sample of about 1,000 males and 850 females who had voluntarily donated blood in Toronto, at least once between June 1974 and February 1978.
The study finds men and women donate about equally in a voluntary system, in contrast to …
Research In The Use Of State Diagramming As A Communication, Diagnostic, And Descriptive Tool In Applied Educational Programs, Roger S. Coates
Research In The Use Of State Diagramming As A Communication, Diagnostic, And Descriptive Tool In Applied Educational Programs, Roger S. Coates
Masters Theses
State diagramming is a schematic communication tool used to present experimental designs or educationally-significant conditions in applied settings. In applied situations, public school teachers and students, and college students used state diagramming as an effective communication and diagnostic tool for educational programming. Four of five teachers showed rapid comprehension of classroom programs when the use of diagramming was compared to written narratives. College students described antecedent events present in familiar educational systems at a higher percentage of accuracy and total information presented almost doubled when diagrams were utilized. Training public school students in drawing state diagrams was initially successful. This …

An Investigation Of The Instructional Communicator Style Expectations Of Nontraditional And Traditional Male And Female Undergraduate Students, Chryl Irvine Snyder
Masters Theses
Increasing numbers of nontraditional students, many of them women, are enrolling in college and university classes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the instructional communicator style expectations of nontraditional and traditional male and female undergraduate students. Students were asked to rate their own preferences on a variety of items designed to reflect instructional communicator styles. The researcher looked for differences in student expectations of their "ideal teachers" based on age and sex.
Nontraditional students rated the precise style of instructional communication higher than the traditional students who gave higher ratings to the friendly, open, dominant, and contentious styles. …

A Summary Of Studies Related To The Effect Of Question Placement On Reading Comprehension, Katherine D. Wiesendanger, Ellen D. Birlem, John Wollenberg
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Most reading specialists would agree that the sole justification for the various decoding instruction in reading is to prepare the student for extracting meaning from the written symbol (Tinker and McCullough, 1962). The pronunciation of words without understanding their meaning is of little use to anyone. Therefore, the development of the processes by which meanings become associated with symbols must be provided for in any reading program (Bond & Tinker, 1973). According to Strang (1969), the mature reader must not only understand the literal meaning of a passage, but also interpret the author's statements, make critical judgments, inferences and evaluations, …

What To Do Until The Readiness Workbooks Arrive!, Patricia Cunningham, James W. Cunningham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
On a brisk October morning, Ms. Kind arrived at school early. "Are those readiness workbooks here, yet?" she asked Ms. Leeder, the principal. "Not yet," Ms. Leeder replied, "but they should be here any day now." "I hope so," responded Ms. Kind. "This morning I noticed how much the leaves have turned. The school year is moving right along. Since the school system's goal this year is to have all children ready to begin reading instruction by the time they complete kindergarten, and my children have such a long way to go, I had better get started soon." "Well, they're …
Pattern Books: An Activity For Beginning Reading Instruction, Elaine G. Wangberg
Pattern Books: An Activity For Beginning Reading Instruction, Elaine G. Wangberg
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The Pattern Book activity to be described can provide a means of introducing and reinforcing high frequency vocabulary within a Language Experience Approach. With this activity the teacher selects a high frequency word (or a few words) which a small group of students or an individual student does not know. These words may come from the students' self-selection, from student' dictation, from a word list or from a basal pre-primer. The teacher then thinks of a common pattern in which the word(s) might appear.

Direct Instruction Of Comprehension: What Does It Really Mean?, Gerald G. Duffy, Laura R. Roehler
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
There is little to debate regarding the validity of findings which suggest that instruction focusing directly on the task of learning to comprehend will result in greater and more consistent achievement than incidental, spontaneous and/or oblique instruction. Within this framework, however, the term "direct instruction" can mask a multitude of qualitatively divergent classroom styles. To illustrate, we will briefly describe a study in which two second grade teachers. each reflecting the characteristics associated with direct instruction. provided noticeably different kinds or reading and language arts instruction for their students. With this study as a basis, we will then offer some …
The Language Experience Approach: A Transition From Oral To Written Language, Don Richgels
The Language Experience Approach: A Transition From Oral To Written Language, Don Richgels
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
A language experience approach to the teaching of beginning reading makes use of the valuable resource of children's speaking ability. But more importantly, it also cultivates metalinguistic ability and eases the child's transition between two very different forms of language, utterance and text.
