Organic Communities, Atomistic Societies, And Loneliness, Ben Mijuskovic
Organic Communities, Atomistic Societies, And Loneliness, Ben Mijuskovic
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The article distinguishes two models of human organization, the organic community and the atomistic society. It maintains that the organic paradigm stresses (a) the ideal unity of the whole; (b) organic or intrinsic relations; (c) living or dialectical processes; (d) the image of "members"; (e) the mutual interdependence of the members; (f) a role perspective; and (g) dynamic or natural functions. By contrast, the atomistic construction emphasizes (a) the value of individual freedom; (b) external connections; (c) mechanical or causal explanations; (d) the metaphor of "parts"; (e) the independence of the parts; (f) a rule orientation; and (g) a formalistic, …

Metacognitive Strategies And Reading Achievement Among Developmental Students In An Urban Community College, Stephen P. O'Neill
Metacognitive Strategies And Reading Achievement Among Developmental Students In An Urban Community College, Stephen P. O'Neill
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Several empirical studies have demonstrated positive relationships between the use of metacognitive strategies and reading achievement among both elementary and secondary school subjects (Bean, Singer and Sorter, 1986; Cross and Paris, 1988; Palincsar and Ransom, 1988) and college students (Nist, Simpson and Hogrebe, 1985; Palmer and Goetz, 1985; Weinstein and Underwood, 1985).

Planning Effective Whole Language Staff Development Programs: A Guide For Staff Developers, Barbara Moss
Planning Effective Whole Language Staff Development Programs: A Guide For Staff Developers, Barbara Moss
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Whole language is sweeping the country. It has been described as part of a "revolution in teaching and learning" (Hiebert and Fisher, 1990), "an exciting grass-roots teacher movement that is changing curricula around the world" (Watson, 1989), and "the newest manifestation of progressive education" (Veatch, 1991). Several factors help provide evidence for its impact. First, approximately five percent of elementary teachers nationwide are using aspects of whole language and more are becoming users daily (O'Neil, 1989). Second, twenty-three states have literacy programs centered upon the use of literature (Cullinan, 1989). Third, membership in the Teaching About Whole Language Umbrella, a …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Book fairs are great fun, and they offer students a chance to explore a world of books in a more exciting atmosphere than the school library. Today, many schools have self-selection programs and activities to suit the wide range of student reading abilities and interests. Multilevel materials are used, and students are encouraged to read as much as they can. Teacher advice and guidance is usually available as the need arises. Consequently, numerous schools have book fairs to stimulate reading through self-selection, and equally important, educators hope to promote reading interest and future reading growth. Accordingly, books for the fairs …
Concept Question Chain: A Framework For Thinking And Learning About Text, Barbara E. Johnson
Concept Question Chain: A Framework For Thinking And Learning About Text, Barbara E. Johnson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teaching students to think and teaching students to develop concepts from text are important parts of reading instruction (Brozo and Simpson, 1991; Herber, 1978; McNeil, 1987). Teachers can guide students' conceptual learning by designing questions that focus on a specific concept and use these questions to stimulate postreading discussion. Research indicates the positive influence questioning has on students' comprehension and retention of prose (Anderson and Biddle, 1975)
A Comparison Of Four Methods To Teach Complex Verbal Concepts Using A Computer-Assisted Instruction Program, John Byron Connors
A Comparison Of Four Methods To Teach Complex Verbal Concepts Using A Computer-Assisted Instruction Program, John Byron Connors
Dissertations
This study compared four instructional programs which taught terminology in behavioral psychology using computer-assisted instruction (CAD with college students. The independent variable was the type of instruction presented by one of four CAI programs: (a) Rules Only, (b) Rules Plus Positive Examples, (c) Rules Plus Negative Examples, and (d) Rules Plus Positive and Negative Examples. The dependent variables were the: (a) pretest scores, (b) posttest scores, (c) 1-week delayed posttest scores, and (d) preference questionnaire scores. Using the pretest as a covariate, results approached significance (p=.07) on posttest scores only for the Rules Only and Rules Plus Positive Examples over …
"Real-Life" Reading Software And "At-Risk" Secondary Students, Shelley B. Wepner
"Real-Life" Reading Software And "At-Risk" Secondary Students, Shelley B. Wepner
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Given that "in some inner-city public schools, more than 50 percent of the students leave before graduating" (Bialo and Sivin, 1989a, p. 35), educators are constantly searching for intervention programs and resources to reverse this trend (Moskowitz, 1989; Ryan and Brewer, 1990; Vescial 1989). Because the computer has been lauded for its ability to assume different software-driven roles, it is especially well-suited to the needs of at-risk students (Bialo and Sivin, 1989a, 1989b; Knights, 1988; Brooks, 1989; Knights, 1988).
The Psychological Typologies And Leadership Behaviors Of First-Line Supervisors In A Large Automotive Company, James Joseph Conlen
The Psychological Typologies And Leadership Behaviors Of First-Line Supervisors In A Large Automotive Company, James Joseph Conlen
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological typologies and leadership behaviors related to participative management of first-line supervisors in a plant of a large automotive company. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI, Myers & McCaulley, 1985) was used as a measure of psychological typologies. The Group Environment Scale (GES, Moos, 1974) was used as a measure of leadership behaviors. The population was 113 first-line supervisors; complete data were obtained for 76 supervisors (67%).
Hypotheses were formulated upon the expectation that GES mean scores would differ depending upon MBTI personality type. Twelve directional hypotheses were investigated using four MBTI …
The Relationship Between The Styles Of Leadership Of Superintendents And The Effectiveness Of School Districts In Puerto Rico, Carlos Jose Cortes
The Relationship Between The Styles Of Leadership Of Superintendents And The Effectiveness Of School Districts In Puerto Rico, Carlos Jose Cortes
Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship between a superintendent's style of leadership and the effectiveness of the school district as measured in the Education Department of Puerto Rico.
The style of leadership of the superintendents was analyzed using the Leader Behavior Analysis II-Self (LBAII, Blanchard, Hambleton> Zigarmi, & Forsyth, 1990) questionnaire. The effectiveness of the school districts was measured using students' dropout rate, 12th grade students' graduation rate, and students' scores on three standardized tests (mathematics, English, and Spanish). The data for measuring district effectiveness were correspondent to the 1988-89 school year.
The Education Department of Puerto Rico has 100 superintendents. …
From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt
From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt
Masters Theses
This thesis is a socio-historical analysis of the animal rights social movement in the United States of America at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. The theoretical model is resource mobilization theory, especially McCarthy and Zald's (1973) entrepreneurial model. The method, which contrasts this social movement at two points in time, is informed by Skocpol's (1984) interpretative historical sociology. In particular, leadership, ideology, organizational structure, and strategy tactics in both eras are examined. Comparing the two manifestations of animal rights protest, the data show that: (a) Leadership and organizational structure, though similar in many respects, are more professionalized …
A Survey Of Computer Use In Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Sites, Martha E. Parks
A Survey Of Computer Use In Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Sites, Martha E. Parks
Masters Theses
Eighty-three Western Michigan University occupational therapy fieldwork sites were surveyed to determine: (a) extent of computer use, (b) diagnostic categories with which computers are used, (c) extent of computer knowledge of registered occupational therapists (OTRs), and (d) adequacy of computer knowledge of fieldwork students. Forty-seven (56.6%) of the 83 surveys were returned. OTRs at 36 (76.6%) of the 47 sites currently use computers. Word processing is the most common way in which these OTRs use computers. The most common clinical use of computers is perceptual/motor assessment and treatment, while the most common research use of computers is for report writing. …
