A Method For Sensing And Recording Simultaneous Behavioral And Electrophysiological Epileptiform Activity And The Observed Suppression Of Paroxysmal Spiking Activity With Classical Conditioning Procedures, J. H. Tough Aug 1972

A Method For Sensing And Recording Simultaneous Behavioral And Electrophysiological Epileptiform Activity And The Observed Suppression Of Paroxysmal Spiking Activity With Classical Conditioning Procedures, J. H. Tough

Masters Theses

A method for sensing and recording the simultaneous behavioral and electrophysiological activity of epileptic seizures was developed. An activity sensing cage consisting of an inverted loudspeaker translated motor behavior into voltage changes. The resultant voltage changes were integrated, amplified and recorded on a polygraph concurrently with electrophysiological data. The method was shown to 1) sense reliably a repeated standard input, 2) be sensitive to differing minute amounts of force and 3) produce data which lends itself to analysis with less variability than a more conventional technique.

Experimental manipulation of epileptiform activity revealed that a behavioral response to the onset of …

The Effects Of A Programmed Sex Education Course On Institutionalized Mental Patients, Alan G. Zukerman Aug 1972

The Effects Of A Programmed Sex Education Course On Institutionalized Mental Patients, Alan G. Zukerman

Masters Theses

There is an apparent need for sex education programs targeted to young institutionalized mental patients. A sex education course was developed that could be easily disseminate and have potential general applications and utility in institutional settings. Data were taken on the effectiveness of the course, its effects on sexual and sex-related values of the subjects, its influence on selfratings of behavior, and evaluative responses of the subjects to the course itself. A pretest-posttest experimental design was used with a control group included. The results showed that factual knowledge in sexual areas was significantly increased by the course. Experimental subjects' values …

Utilize Volunteer Help In Your Reading Program, Lucetta A. Johnson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"A job for everyone and everyone with a job." If each child in your classroom is to work up to his full potential, this adage applies to the students in your classroom and to anyone who offers you volunteer help, the same way it applies to efficiency in business.

The Effect Of Temperature On Refining, Richard Granger Apr 1972

The Effect Of Temperature On Refining, Richard Granger

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The results of this work indicate that elevated beating temperature drastically increases beating time and produces detrimental effects on the physical characteristics of the formed sheet as evaluated by wet web strength, tear and tensile.

It is thus indicative of the value of cold temperature refining.

The Pulping Of Hardwood Sawdust By The Neutral Sulfite Semichemical Process For Use In Corrugating Medium, James O. Mcclelland Apr 1972

The Pulping Of Hardwood Sawdust By The Neutral Sulfite Semichemical Process For Use In Corrugating Medium, James O. Mcclelland

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The need for using less expensive raw materials is ever increasing. Here the use of hardwood sawdust as one of these raw materials was investigated for use in Semichemical Corrugating Medium. It was found that 20 to 30% sawdust could be used in the furnish without a significant loss in sheet strength. It was also found that sawdust could be pulped either separately or combined with hardwood chips giving the same product quality. This was accomplished by either a regular neutral sulfite semichemical cook or by a vapor phase cook. The conventional disk refiner was found to do the best …

The Effects Of Starch On Pickup, As Influenced By Solids, Temperature, Viscosity And Depth Of Penetration On Sheet Properties, James W. Ramp Apr 1972

The Effects Of Starch On Pickup, As Influenced By Solids, Temperature, Viscosity And Depth Of Penetration On Sheet Properties, James W. Ramp

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This reporting is a review of the current issue of knowledge in the area of size press variables. It delves into the sheet properties affected by the application of surface size.

A pilot plant study was conducted which evaluated the affect of Penford Gum 280. This starch was applied to the 46 pound 50% hardwood, 50% softwood, 15% clay filled sheet being formed on the 30 inch wide pilot papermachine at Western Michigan University. Starch application was made at various temperature and solids concentrations to obtain different amounts of pickup and variables deaths of penetration.

The results of this study …

Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen Apr 1972

Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In a great many high schools, teachers are finding that their students' inability to comprehend the textbook at grade level is becoming an increasingly serious problem. Frequently, these teachers state, reading the text with adequate understanding is "out of the question" for many of their students. High school administrators are looking for ways to set up special classes or institute remedial reading programs in order to solve what appears to be a growing reading problem. Upon closer examination, teachers and administrators may find that, for a large proportion of these reading problems, insufficient vocabulary plays a large causal role. They …
