The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary Jan 1975

The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A feasibility study of fluidized bed high rate - biological waste treatment was performed. Goals of the , investigation were to demonstrate possible advantages of higher treatment rates and compaction of effective reactor volume, and to compare this, system to conventional high rate treatment, in particular, activated sludge.

This system was found to be capable of achieving high rates of Boo 5 removal, producing a, consistent low concentration effluent. Such treatment could be realized in one-fifth the reactor volume required for conventional activated sludge, operating at an equivalent organic loading rate. Less sludge wasting occurred in this system operation than …

The Application Of Linear Programming In The Design Of Least Cost Furnishes For Paper Making Systems, George M. Iverson Jan 1975

The Application Of Linear Programming In The Design Of Least Cost Furnishes For Paper Making Systems, George M. Iverson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Linear programming is a mathematical technique used to optimize complex physical processes. Due to rising pulp costs, the need to minimize the costs of raw materials in paper furnishes is acute. This paper studies the potential of linear programming as a tool to design furnishes meeting designated paper specifications while minimizing raw material costs. The flexibility of linear programming is discussed and the applicability of linear models describing multi-component furnishes with their effect on paper properties is investigated. Some paper properties were found to fit well with the linear model. Some of these were opacity, smoothness, tensile, mullen, and tear. …

Teacher Education In The Field Of Reading, David B. Doake Jan 1975

Teacher Education In The Field Of Reading, David B. Doake

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

For too long a pervasive idea in the field of teacher education has been that primary teachers only, and more especiaHy those primary teachers who are concerned with the education of the very young, have the sole responsibility for teaching the students who are moving through our educational institutions how to read. The beginning and the end of the process of learning to read effectively have been left almost entirely in the hands of the primary teacher, who, up until recently, has experienced only minimal courses in the field of reading as part of his pre-service training. One of the …

General Education: A Learner's Viewpoint, Eugene Wine Jan 1975

General Education: A Learner's Viewpoint, Eugene Wine

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Most of the articles we read about general education are written by those who either teach or administer some kind of general education program. I think it might be valuable to know the viewpoint of someone who has been trying to educate himself generally throughout a lifetime.

The interdisciplinary courses which many schools now have seem to me to be a great improvement over the general education program which prevailed in my undergraduate days , which was the still quite prevalent one of a certain number of credit hours in the various academic divisions. My feeling is, however, that one …

Self-Defeating Characters, Milton R. Cudney Jan 1975

Self-Defeating Characters, Milton R. Cudney

All Books and Monographs by WMU Authors

For some time I have been aware of a need to have additional ways of helping people open up to see what they do to defeat themselves. The need is to help people see, and honestly face, what they do to bring about defeating results in their lives. When people can see what they do to defeat themselves, they are in a better position to make non-defeating choices. The various characters in this book have been created by me to serve as vehicles to fulfill this need. The characters themselves do not represent real individual people, but the information contained …

Horizons Of Reading Education: Self-Image And The Disabled Reader, William L. Holladay Jan 1975

Horizons Of Reading Education: Self-Image And The Disabled Reader, William L. Holladay

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Every teacher, whether a reading teacher or a content area teacher, has had the problem of teaching disabled readers and has found to his dismay that not only must a learning disability be confronted, but that often a major portion of this learning disability involves the student's self-image or emotional self-concept. Frustration results for both the teacher and student. There seem to be no magic formulae for treatment of this problem, but many teachers are finding some very creative solutions. Ms. Shirley Madsen, a reading teacher in Helena, Montana is one such teacher.

Reading In The Secondary School: A Self-Help Reading Laboratory, Kenneth Vandermeulen Jan 1975

Reading In The Secondary School: A Self-Help Reading Laboratory, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Movements to begin all-school reading programs often wait for the right set of circumstances and may be in the planning stages while hundreds of students are missing the spark they might provide. We should think of a means of setting some of the wheels turning, even if the school does not seem ready for all phases to be put into action. It is a sad fact that many high schools have nothing approaching an emphasis on reading; therefore, there is nothing to call teachers' attention to the importance of improving reading skills in every class. If no one takes responsibility …

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson Dec 1974

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson

Honors Theses

Along with many other psychologists and sociologists, I am alarmed by the rapid increase in divorce rates. Toffler, in Future Shock, suggests one result of increasing technology might be the break up of the basic family unit. Gone are the days of the average couple meeting and settling down in the same town they have always lived in, surrounded by a secure and stable milieu. No longer are most women satisfied to take on the role of housewife, accepting their main responsibility as cleaning, cooking, and clothing their families. A marriage in our increasingly changing society is made up of …

Change And Program Evaluation In Social Organization, Alan M. Cohen Dec 1974

Change And Program Evaluation In Social Organization, Alan M. Cohen

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

There is an assumption of an inherent rationality in linking information on program effectiveness to program change. This article briefly discusses three typical evaluation studies and demonstration projects that fail to link information generated on the effectiveness of what people do, to program changes. Perceived inaccuracy of the information and the perceived threat of the information are emphasized as two reasons for this failure of program information to affect change in social organizations. A pre-planning functional information base is proposed as an important prerequisite in the sequence of creating a more receptive environment for organizational change.

It is often assumed …

The Three Evaluations Of Social Welfare Programs, Dean Harper, Haroutun M. Babigian Dec 1974

The Three Evaluations Of Social Welfare Programs, Dean Harper, Haroutun M. Babigian

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

As new and innovative social welfare programs are being attempted, there has been an increased concern with evaluating the effectiveness of such programs. To what degree is a new program effective? For which kinds of clients is each type of program effective? What elements are crucial in a program which has been judged to be effective? These are just a few of the questions that evaluators would like to answer.

There is a large literature on evaluation research--some of it reporting or reviewing the results of specific evaluations (6, 8, 9, 10, 11) and some of it presenting general discussions, …

Behavioral Science Influences On Legislation: The Case Of Delinquency Prevention, Albert S. Alissi Dec 1974

Behavioral Science Influences On Legislation: The Case Of Delinquency Prevention, Albert S. Alissi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

This paper will discuss some of the issues and problems which arise in the field of delinquency prevention where there is over-riding public interest and concern and calls for action to prevent delinquency, but where the problem is elusive and where the variables are not easily isolated and controlled through experimental procedures. What, in fact, constitutes the body of knowledge in the field? What uses can be made of behavioral science materials where there has been little or no experimental successes, or data upon which to build action programs? What credence should be given to …
