Reading Expectancy Formulae--Strengths And Limitations To Be Considered, Beverly Hooper Jan 1978

Reading Expectancy Formulae--Strengths And Limitations To Be Considered, Beverly Hooper

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading expectancy formulae and intelligence tests are two instruments with which the reading teacher is very familiar. However, the designs of both reading expectancy formulae and intelligence tests have incorporated various strengths and limitations into each. When the two are combined to determine a child's level of expectancy, much distortion in prediction may occur if careful selection and evaluation of these instruments are not executed. A critical look at the popular reading expectancy formulae and related use of intelligence tests will show that there are beneficial uses of reading expectancy formula in general but that there are also valid reasons …

Effective Ways Of Building Vocabulary In Every Content Area, Donald C. Cushenbery Jan 1978

Effective Ways Of Building Vocabulary In Every Content Area, Donald C. Cushenbery

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

One of the important responsibilities of any teacher at any level is that of planning a sequential program of vocabulary development in each and every area of the curriculum. Vocabulary enlargement must be seen as being a part of the major language arts curriculum of every school in all content departments. All teaching which deals with oral and written words involves concept formation and hence additional words and phrases with their attendant meanings.

General Education And Interdisciplinary Studies In The Arts, Dennis J. Sporre Jan 1978

General Education And Interdisciplinary Studies In The Arts, Dennis J. Sporre

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The conservatory approach to education in the arts is commonplace. Even in land-grant institutions which purportedly espouse a liberal arts or general education (there are differences between the two) the tendency in arts instruction has been to shape the curriculum into more and more specificity, so that even at the undergraduate level the student is given an option to choose, within his major, rather narrow specializations. The resultant increase in specialty courses and their need for staffing constantly refires the age-old arguments relating to general and liberal education and how, within various matrixes, general students or non-majors can be accommodated. …

Social Control Or Social Wage: On The Political Economy Of The "Welfare State", Paul Adams Jan 1978

Social Control Or Social Wage: On The Political Economy Of The "Welfare State", Paul Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Discussion between liberal apologists for the "welfare state" and their radical critics has tended in recent years to focus on the question of "social control." In this area the corporate liberals and social democrats (the "welfare statists") are weak. They talk of the "welfare state" as if, at least in principle, it represented the collective assumption by society of responsibility for the basic needs and dependencies of its members. Insofar as "social control" is relevant for them, it has to do with society's exercise of restraint over the selfish pursuit of private profit.1 Radical critics of the "welfare state," on …

A Political Economy Critique Of The American Welfare State, Gerben Dejong Jan 1978

A Political Economy Critique Of The American Welfare State, Gerben Dejong

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite its rapid expansion over the last decade, the American welfare state appears unable to remedy many of the social problems it has been designated to solve. In many instances, the welfare state has become as much a part of the problem as the solution. Unfortunately, most proposals to reform the welfare state do not go beyond the liberalconservative conception of the welfare state as a backup to the capitalist market system. This conception of the welfare state is part of a larger comitment to a free market-pluralist ideology that singles out certain social phenomena as problematic and limits the …

The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1978

The Measurement Of Personal Influence In Organization And Community, Roger A. Lohmann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Discussions of personal influence in situations in communities and organizations are ordinarily abstract and theoretical. In this paper, a practical method for the measurement of influence in interactional terms is developed. The approach combines the use of Likert scales, sociometric techniques and a simplified version of "blockmodeling" using mathematical matrices. The method is outlined using a hypothetical social service agency with a seven-member staff.

Parity, Family Size Preference And The "Value Stretch", Virginia Aldige Hiday, Steven Polgar Jan 1978

Parity, Family Size Preference And The "Value Stretch", Virginia Aldige Hiday, Steven Polgar

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A two-wave survey of women in their reproductive years living in poverty areas of New York City is used to investigate family size preferences among the poor. The hypotheses that parity affects family size preference and that current parity affects future parity are supported. Implications for future trends in family size preference and for family planning programs are discussed.

The Guns Or Butter Issue: Trends In American Public Opinion, 1935-1976, Darrel Montero Jan 1978

The Guns Or Butter Issue: Trends In American Public Opinion, 1935-1976, Darrel Montero

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines the responses to national opinion surveys taken between 1935 and 1976 on questions related to the federal government's role in providing social welfare programs and recent survey findings on defense spending. The paper's major findings are that: 1) in general, the public supports the basic concept of providing aid to the needy through the government but shows less consistent support when specific spending proposals are mentioned: and 2) as theshareof the federal budget allocated for defense spending has been decreasing, polls have shown an increasing proportion of the public expressing support for greater delcense spending. The paper …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks Dec 1977

A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to: (1) Identify and explore the non-science majors' attitudes toward science; (2) Use the results of the investigation to design a course to be used by instructors of Earth and Space Science.

Two major instruments were developed to collect data for the study. The first was an Attitude Inventory and the second was a Course Content Inventory. A major goal of the Attitude Inventory was to collect data with which to develop an Attitude Index which could be used to predict those non-science majors who have some "negative" attitudes toward science. The course design …

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson Dec 1977

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson

Masters Theses

Three groups of rats learned a black-white discrimination in a Grice box. All subjects were reinforced with food pellets for correct choices. No-Retrace subjects were confined in the negative goal box after errors. Retrace subjects were allowed to withdraw after errors from the negative goal box to the choice point or start box. Take-Out subjects were manually removed from the goal box during errors immediately after inspecting the empty food dish. All subjects were trained to a criterion and then reversal training was instituted. Retrace subjects learned the original discrimination significantly slower than either No-Retrace or Take-Out subjects, which did …

An Application Of Infrared Spectroscopy To The Study Of Binder Migration In Paper Coatings, Fred E. Huang Dec 1977

An Application Of Infrared Spectroscopy To The Study Of Binder Migration In Paper Coatings, Fred E. Huang

Masters Theses

Multiple internal reflectance (MIR) was used to study binder migration of paper coatings. Casein and an acrylic latex were selected as binders because of their characteristic infrared absorption bands. The coatings analyzed were prepared on the Western Michigan University Pilot Coater using the airknife coating method at different coating speeds. A surface grinder was used to obtain several layers of coating for surface studies.

It was concluded that the MIR technique could satisfactorily be used in the binder migration studies. Its success mainly depends on the precision of surface grinding, caliper measurement and infrared characteristics of the binders. The results …
