The Effects Of Over Drying, Before The Size Press On Strength Properties, William A. Granger
The Effects Of Over Drying, Before The Size Press On Strength Properties, William A. Granger
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This thesis was designed to determine the effects of moisture variations before the size press, and its effects on strength properties. This experiment involved laboratory experimentation along with a paper program pilot plant two day trial.
The results from the laboratory data revealed that an increased moisture content into the size press resulted in an increase in overall strength content for tests including tear, burst, and fold. The pilot plant trial data showed a specific window effect, in that at very low/high moisture levels entering the size press, a significant decrease in strength could be seen.

Street Children Programs In Latin America, Mark W. Lusk
Street Children Programs In Latin America, Mark W. Lusk
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The growing problem of street children is among the most important child welfare problems today. Estimates are that there are as many as 25 million street children in Latin America alone. This paper, which is based on over five months of fieldwork in Latin America, is a study of the problem of street children. Life on the streets is described in relation to the developmental stages of street children. The paper emphasizes the types of programs that have emerged as the countries of the region seek to ameliorate and prevent this social problem. A program typology is developed and discussed.

Parental Knowledge Of Readability And Children's Reading Interests, Gary A. Negin
Parental Knowledge Of Readability And Children's Reading Interests, Gary A. Negin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Parents can play an integral part in developing their children's reading skills. Supportive parents understand the value of encouraging reading by providing interesting books at appropriate difficulty levels. However, little research is available which investigates parents' knowledge of their children's interests or parents' ability to choose books of appropriate difficulty for their children. This study investigated children's reading interests and the extent to which their parents knew these interests. Additionally, the study examined the ability of parents and children to select books at appropriate reading levels.

Miscue Analysis For Classroom Use, Susan B. Argyle
Miscue Analysis For Classroom Use, Susan B. Argyle
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
During oral reading, students often say something other than what is actually printed in the book. Such "miscues" can be used to help teachers make decisions about upcoming reading instruction. Deviations from text during oral reading are not simply random mistakes (Goodman, 1969), but form patterns that reveal useful information about children's reading abilities. A relaxed version of miscue analysis can take as little as ten minutes to administer and score. This kind of information provides a profile of the reader's strengths and weaknesses which in turn gives important clues as to the range of strategies students use during reading.
Microcomputer Applications For Content Area Vocabulary, Stephen Phelps, Lawrence L. Smith
Microcomputer Applications For Content Area Vocabulary, Stephen Phelps, Lawrence L. Smith
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Microcomputers have become fixtures in most schools. It would be a rare elementary, middle, or high school which did not have a microcomputer lab, and many teachers now have at least one micro available in the classroom itself. With the proliferation of the microcomputer and its attendant software have come many potential uses in content areas (Blanchard & Mason, 1985). Vocabulary instruction is perhaps one of the most accessible and versatile areas in which the microcomputer can be a significant adjunct to content teaching.
They Can All Sound Good, Lorraine Mary Leidholdt
They Can All Sound Good, Lorraine Mary Leidholdt
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
At one time or another every elementary classroom teacher hears a child's oral reading performance which makes him/her feel uncomfortable. Hesitations, repetitions, improper use of intonation skills and word mispronunciations abound. Inconsistent rate and rhythm make comprehension of the text nearly impossible for the listener. One typically associates this type of reading with children who have below grade level reading achievement. however, this need not be the case. In rooms where teachers understand the variables of fluent texting behavior and use techniques which incorporate the principles of effective practice and learning, listeners will not be able to distinguish between the …

Pulp Viscosity Vs. Zero Span Tensile For Determining Pulp Strength, John P. Shulstad
Pulp Viscosity Vs. Zero Span Tensile For Determining Pulp Strength, John P. Shulstad
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Pulp viscosity and zero span tensile tests can be used to predict the ultimate fiber strength of pulp fibers. A project to compare the traditional test with the newer zero span tensile test was completed. In order to compare both tests for precision, bleached softwood kraft pulp was disintegrated and made into handsheets. The handsheets were exposed to ION HCL vapor from a few minutes to a few hours to get a range in fiber strength since the HCl degrades the cellulose. Pulp viscosity and zero span tensile tests were completed on the handsheet paper samples. It was observed that …
The Development Of A Personalized Computer Assisted School Psychology (Casp) System, Patricia Lou Steinert
The Development Of A Personalized Computer Assisted School Psychology (Casp) System, Patricia Lou Steinert
Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to develop a model computer system to assist school psychologists in managing and manipulating data accumulated in the course of accomplishing their professional responsibilities. School psychologists have traditionally generated large amounts of data, but rarely have they looked across these data to obtain information and/or feedback about their own functioning relative to their professional role. The system described is intended as a model from which an individual psychologist might construct a system to meet individual needs. Data across students were accumulated in four broad areas: (1) personal effectiveness/accountability, (2) diagnosis, (3) local test norms, …

Effect Of Computer Graphics Use On Student Understanding Of Calculus Concepts, Charlene E. Beckmann
Dissertations
Student understanding of selected calculus concepts as developed through use of a Cartesian coordinate graphical representation system were investigated. Subjects (N = 163) enrolled in first-semester calculus sections at Western Michigan University participated in one of four treatment conditions: Graphics (G), exposure to a computer-graphically-developed conceptual course; Graphics Plus (G+), exposure to the same course as G subjects plus provision of computer graphics software and related supplemental assignments; Standard 1 (S1), exposure to a graphically-developed, conceptual course; and Standard 2 (S2), exposure to a traditional skill-oriented course.
Two investigations were undertaken. In Investigation 1, comparisons were made between G and …

A Comparison Of Video Disc-Presented To Teacher-Presented Direct Instruction, Charles P. Schira
Masters Theses
The video disc Mastering Fractions by Systems Impact (1984) was investigated for effects on student on-task behavior. The video disc uses basic principles of Direct Instruction and was compared to teacher-presented Direct Instruction. The study used a reversal design in a Special Education classroom where the classroom teacher normally used Direct Instruction. Three Special Education students at the junior high school level were used as subjects. The results of the study indicate a slight increase in student attending behavior with the use of the video disc. Subjects were also evaluated for the novelty effect of the video disc on attending …

Changes in policy and programmatic responses to shoplifters are suggested.
The Psychological Needs Of Sex Offenders Of Children As Measured By The Personality Research Form, Shirley Anne Miller
The Psychological Needs Of Sex Offenders Of Children As Measured By The Personality Research Form, Shirley Anne Miller
Dissertations
Major contributors in the field of child sexual abuse have agreed that sex offenders who sexually abuse children are not primarily motivated by sexual desire and have proposed that the simultaneous satisfaction of a number of psychological needs is the prominent motivation of sex offenders of children. Few attempts have been made to empirically validate the clinical and theoretical impressions regarding the psychological needs of this group using psychological measures designed to assess needs or motives.
The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent the assumptions about the psychological needs of sex offenders of children would be …

Intuition In Decision Making By Human Service Administrators, Judith Huber Halseth
Intuition In Decision Making By Human Service Administrators, Judith Huber Halseth
Dissertations
The phenomenon of intuition includes insights and hunches, as well as the ability to pick up clues and to see patterns. The role of intuition in interpersonal relationships, in problem solving and decision making, and in creativity makes it an important cognitive faculty. As a complement to more systematic and deductive decision making, intuition provides creative insights, especially when people consciously acknowledge intuition.
This study focused on the experience of intuition as reported by 25 administrators in human service organizations. In face-to-face interviews, the 10 women and 15 men who were known to use intuition were asked open-ended questions about …
An Analogue Of Science, Michael Albert Minervini
An Analogue Of Science, Michael Albert Minervini
Dissertations
There is no science of human behavior, not even an incipient one. The popular conception of applied behavior analysis as a genuine principle-driven technology is mostly an illusion. Two sorts of evidence support this conclusion. The first is an ever widening split between the field's basic and applied realms. The second, thus far unacknowledged, is that when the concepts of operant and respondent conditioning are extended to human behavior, they are often rendered as no more than metaphors. These metaphors are not confined to casual discourse or even to interpretation. In fact, they are the prevailing form of extension in …
Effects Of Student Attitudes And Student Time On Achievement Gains In College Developmental Reading, Kathryn K. Welsch
Effects Of Student Attitudes And Student Time On Achievement Gains In College Developmental Reading, Kathryn K. Welsch
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to provide a new focus on college-level developmental reading programs by examining course content (i.e., instructional activities) in a developmental reading class.
Attitudes and time spent on instructional activities were monitored for 47 students in three sections of college level developmental reading. Multiple regression analyses were used to relate these data to vocabulary and comprehension gains on the Nelson Denny Reading Test (J. Brown, Nelson, & Denny, 1976).
Students made significant gains in vocabulary and in comprehension. Student attitudes predicted gains in both vocabulary and comprehension. Because of reliability problems, the time data do …
