Assistance Models In Reading Instruction, Martha Grindler Oct 1989

Assistance Models In Reading Instruction, Martha Grindler

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

There is general agreement that it is not possible within the constraints of undergraduate programs and the limited time frame for preservice teaching experience to train highly professional teachers before the first year of teaching (McDonald, 1980). Thus, professional education should be considered a continuous process (Feiman-Nemser, 1983).

Ending The Great Debate In Reading Instruction, Jon Shapiro, James Riley Oct 1989

Ending The Great Debate In Reading Instruction, Jon Shapiro, James Riley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

For decades, reading educators have put forth various definitions of reading and theories related to processes which occur during the reading act. Classroom teachers must understand what reading is if they are to teach effectively, yet it is easy for confusion to set in because of conflicting views of the reading act. Depending upon which speaker is heard, or which article is read, or in which professor's class they were enrolled, teachers may be exposed to many differing views of reading.

From Basal Reader To Whole Language: Transition Tactics, Pamela J. Farris Oct 1989

From Basal Reader To Whole Language: Transition Tactics, Pamela J. Farris

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Ever since William McGuffey introduced his famous reading series, the basal reader has been relied upon as the prominent means of teaching children to read. As recently as 1980, between 80% and 90% of the nation's elementary teachers used basal readers as the primary instructional method (Koeller, 1981). During the past few years, the whole language approach has become popular and is threatening to unseat the basal from its longtime bastion in reading instruction.

Curriculum Dilemma: The Early Reader "Mom, I Never Read In School", Sarah L. Dowhower Oct 1989

Curriculum Dilemma: The Early Reader "Mom, I Never Read In School", Sarah L. Dowhower

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"My child read before he started kindergarten. Now he only reads at home at night, because they don't do much reading in school, just letters and sounds. It is very discouraging for him and me." These are the words of a frustrated parent. Could it be that teachers are ignoring the literacy knowledge children bring to school?

Expository Text Structure And Student Learning, David Hays Oct 1989

Expository Text Structure And Student Learning, David Hays

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Upper elementary teachers may wonder why some of their students with no history of comprehension problems suddenly struggle with understanding their social studies, science and health texts. These teachers might correctly point to the more difficult concepts presented in these texts and to the more technical vocabulary that their students will now encounter. Yet these factors are only part of the problem that students face when they move from stories to content material.

Old Folks' Homes For Blacks During The Progressive Era, Iris Carlton-Laney Sep 1989

Old Folks' Homes For Blacks During The Progressive Era, Iris Carlton-Laney

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper discusses the development of old folks' homes for Blacks during the Progressive Era. Churches, women's clubs, and secret societies played a major role in the development, funding, and operation of these institutions. These groups adhered to the doctrine of self-help and group solidarity which provided impetus for their charitable activities. The members of these organizations believed that leaving "'worthy" indigent Black aged to live out their last years in almshouses was cruel and intolerable. This paper highlights some of the efforts and many of the homes that were established for the Black aged through the cooperation and material …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Class Size And Student Achievement On The Michigan Educational Assessment Program Fourth Grade Test, Ralph Burde Aug 1989

A Study Of The Relationship Of Class Size And Student Achievement On The Michigan Educational Assessment Program Fourth Grade Test, Ralph Burde

Dissertations

In this study the relationship and differences in student achievement and class size were investigated. The population of the study was the 111,199 students who completed the fall 1988 Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP, Michigan State Board of Education, 1988) fourth grade test. The MEAP is a criterion referenced test and is the state of Michigan's only achievement test.

The independent variable of the study was class size. The dependent variables of the study were student achievement as measured by the students' fall 1988 MEAP reading, mathematics, and combined reading and mathematics test scores. The hypothesis of the study, supported …

The Task /Time Management Component Of The Learning To Learn System, James B. Cook Aug 1989

The Task /Time Management Component Of The Learning To Learn System, James B. Cook

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of a task/time management training (consisting of breaking large tasks down, planning and practice) on academic task completion for 29 students in an undergraduate psychology study skills course. A training package and individual training and practice were provided by self management coaches. A multiple baseline across groups design was used. Individual meetings were conducted between self management coaches and students to assess the percentage of task completion based upon a 10-point scale. The mean group task completion scores did not show asignificant rate of change as a result of the intervention.

Compliance With Universal Precautions By Health Care Workers In A Rural Community Emergency Room, Jane E. Devries Aug 1989

Compliance With Universal Precautions By Health Care Workers In A Rural Community Emergency Room, Jane E. Devries

Masters Theses

Performance feedback has been used in various organizations to correct problems in the areas of safety, customer service, absenteeism, and tardiness. The present research examined the effects of performance feedback to increase compliance with universal precautions in an emergency room department. Four subjects (Registered Nurses) were observed for glove wearing in any of six different situations common to the emergency room. These included cleaning instruments, cleaning a laceration, giving an injection, phlebotomy, inserting an intravenous catheter, and obtaining and/or transporting specimens other than blood. A multiple baseline experimental design was employed in this study. Results indicated that performance feedback increased …

The Myth Of Tereus And The Nightingale Motif In Classical And Medieval Literature And In The Works Of Chauce, Betty Vanderwielen Aug 1989

The Myth Of Tereus And The Nightingale Motif In Classical And Medieval Literature And In The Works Of Chauce, Betty Vanderwielen

Masters Theses

In the myth of Tereus a woman is metamorphosed into a nightingale, in which form she perpetually laments her killing of her son. An investigation into the use of the myth in classical literature ranging from Homer to Ovid shows that certain themes recur: truth reveals itself in a non-conventional manner, sorrow is paradoxically linked with joy, the victim is the perpetrator of her own suffering.

In the Middle Ages the nightingale motif is associated with joy rather than lament and connected with love (both lascivious and sacred). References to the nightingale seem to have little connection with the myth, …

Temporal Discrimination Training Of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury Using Computer-Based Operant Procedures, Robert Edward Obrecht Aug 1989

Temporal Discrimination Training Of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury Using Computer-Based Operant Procedures, Robert Edward Obrecht

Masters Theses

Computer-based interresponse time (IRT) and matching-to-sample (MTS) procedures were employed in two experiments to assess and effect changes in temporal discriminations made by adults with a history of traumatic brain injury. The results of Experiment One support the interpretation that maintaining correct IRT > t performance was a function of stimulus conditions that included signalled IRTs, values of t less than 3-seconds, a contract agreement to maintain performance, and other contingencies not explicitly part of the design. The results of Experiment Two, that minimal response latencies on MTS tasks are mediated equally well by an experimenter's verbal prompting as well as …

Reliability And Validity Of The Body Mechanics Obstacle Course Evaluation, Louise Sinclair-Eastman Aug 1989

Reliability And Validity Of The Body Mechanics Obstacle Course Evaluation, Louise Sinclair-Eastman

Masters Theses

A review of the literature suggests that the way in which an individual performs activities, or body mechanics, can affect the amount of stress placed on the low back. Several clinical programs treat patients with low back pain by teaching proper body mechanics. Although body mechanics obstacle course evaluations are used by occupational therapists to assess patients, there has been no published information regarding the reliability and validity of these evaluations. The purpose of this study was to establish the validity and reliability of one version, the Body Mechanics Obstacle Course (BMOC).

Content validity was established by reviewing the literature …

Psychophysiological Assessment Of Panic Disorder, Kent A. Koehn Aug 1989

Psychophysiological Assessment Of Panic Disorder, Kent A. Koehn

Masters Theses

This study compared physiological and psychological measures between 9 subjects meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder (PD) and 9 control subjects to identify psychophysiological differences that might be relevant to the etiology and maintenance of panic attacks. The subjects were assessed through a number of self-report measures and across three laboratory sessions involving five experimental conditions: baseline, role play, relaxation, mental arithmetic, and cold pressor. We measured electrodermal (EDG) and electro-myographic activity (EMG), heart rate (HR), and blood volume pulse (BVP) in terms of absolute values, reactivity, and habituation. Both groups were also assessed in their ability to accurately …

An Efficient Implementation Of Logical Design For Relational Databases, Shakeel Ishaque Aug 1989

An Efficient Implementation Of Logical Design For Relational Databases, Shakeel Ishaque

Masters Theses

This work presents efficient methodology for the design of relational databases and an implementation of a design tool. A set of algorithms and supporting theory are discussed. Improvements are made on existing decomposition approaches.

The Dependency Preserving Normal Fom (DPNF), which is stronger than 3NF, is presented. It guarantees a decomposition with lossless join property and at the same time preserves all of the functional dependencies.

An algorithm to obtain DPNF decomposition is presented. The algorithm computes DPNF decomposition in polynomial time. It converts supplied functional dependencies to annular cover and uses reduced annular cover to compute closures and decomposition. …

Making Story Time A Literacy Event For The Young Child, Beth Weir Jul 1989

Making Story Time A Literacy Event For The Young Child, Beth Weir

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A literacy event is "any action or sequence, involving one or more persons in which the production and/or comprehension of print plays a role" (Anderson, Teale & Estrada, 1980). Story reading by a parent or teacher is perhaps the single most effective literacy event in a young child's experience with written language. Increasingly, reports suggest children's development of skills associated with ease of reading acquisition are enhanced with regular readings of storybooks both prior to and concomitant with formal instruction.

Language And Literacy: Mediating Reading Problems In A Communicative Context, Jim Waddell, Victoria J. Risko Jul 1989

Language And Literacy: Mediating Reading Problems In A Communicative Context, Jim Waddell, Victoria J. Risko

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this paper is to describe how Trevor, a student who failed first grade because he didn't attain minimal reading skills according to school standards, learned to read during his second year in first grade. We believe that this description of Trevor's program will contribute to the understanding of how oral and written language impact on literacy attainment. We describe (a) Trevor's school history and problems that were noted in his folder prior to his second year in first grade, and (b) Trevor's success in learning to read and write in a program that encouraged his use of …

Classroom Oral Reading And Its Needs Or Restraints, John H. Warren

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Few deny the beneficial effects of prose or poetry read aloud by a fluent and expressive reader; imparting reassurance, delivering entertainment, dispensing information or explanation, arousing curiosity, diffusing inspiration (Trelease, 1982). Apart from these advantages as we shall see, oral reading has the capability to engender literacy among individuals, more particularly our schoolchildren (Hoffman, 1982).
