Using positioning theory as an analytic lens, this article investigates the collaborative interactions of two ESL teachers in two separate, but demographically similar suburban middle schools. It examines the impact of these ESL teachers’ collaborations on ELLs’ opportunities for academic language and content area learning, and it calls for the field to …

Selecting Words For Instruction During Primary Read-Alouds, Karen J. Kindle Aug 2015

Selecting Words For Instruction During Primary Read-Alouds, Karen J. Kindle

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading aloud is a wide-spread practice in early childhood and primary classrooms that is purported to develop a range of literacy skills, including vocabulary. Since it is not feasible to teach all of the words in a given text, efforts to maximize the instructional power of read-aloud events have included research regarding word selection. This study explores the extent to which research-based practices for selecting words for instruction have been incorporated into the practices of four primary grade teachers. Findings indicate that teachers may rely more on intuition and personal experience to select words rather than following expert’s recommendations. Implications …

A Parallel Algorithm For Compression Of Big Next-Generation Sequencing Datasets, Sandino N. Vargas Perez, Fahad Saeed

Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports

With the advent of high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, the amount of data being generated represents challenges including storage, analysis and transport of huge datasets. One solution to storage and transmission of data is compression using specialized compression algorithms. However, these specialized algorithms suffer from poor scalability with increasing size of the datasets and best available solutions can take hours to compress gigabytes of data. In this paper we introduce paraDSRC, a parallel implementation of DSRC algorithm using a message passing model that presents reduction of the compression time complexity by a factor of O(1/p ). Our experimental results show …

Dixon, et al. (2009) provided an updated task analysis (Carr & Burkholder, 1998) in the widely used platform Excel 2007. Vanselow and Bourret (2012) provided online tutorials outlining some alternate methods also using Office 2007. This article serves as an update to those task analyses with alternative and under-utilized methods in Excel 2013. To examine the utility of our recommendations twelve psychology graduate students were presented with the task analyses and the experimenters …

The Design Of Nanostructures From The Blending Of Flowing Agents Influencing Critical Properties Of A Pharmaceutical Formulation, Casey F. Kick Aug 2015

The Design Of Nanostructures From The Blending Of Flowing Agents Influencing Critical Properties Of A Pharmaceutical Formulation, Casey F. Kick

Masters Theses

In the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, it is well known that flowing agents such as MgSt and Cab-O-Sil widely affect critical flow properties that influence the finished product performance of oral dosage tablets. Though the effects of flowing agents are beneficial to some extent, the sensitivity of the pharmaceutical formulation to process shearing of flowing agents during blending can be catastrophic which often results in product and batch failures. Hence it is essential to study the concentration of flowing agents and chemical nature of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with respect to applied process shear on formulations. Previous studies have shown that …

Developing An Efficient Failure Prediction Model In Support Of A Distributed Operating System For Autonomic Networks, Jondi Hesham Abed

Dissertations

Network fault management has been a vibrant research area in computer networks because of the immediate benefits that it can deliver to network operators and service providers. Unfortunately, most existing fault management systems (to date) target a specific domain. Ideally, collateral damage due to network failures could be mitigated if they could be predicted in advance of their occurrence. Homeostasis could then be more easily maintained by taking corrective measures to avoid imminent failures before they occurred.

Here, we set out with precisely the objective of designing an automated system that is capable of predicting the imminent occurrence of system …

Evaluating Sexual Assault Prevention Training Programs For College Women, Eliza S. Mcmanus Aug 2015

Evaluating Sexual Assault Prevention Training Programs For College Women, Eliza S. Mcmanus

Dissertations

Sexual victimization is a frequent and concerning problem for college women. It is estimated that college women are three times more likely to experience sexual assault than women in the general population. Additionally, women with a history of unwanted sexual experiences are at greater risk for future sexual victimization than women without such histories. For these reasons, the examination of college-based sexual assault prevention programs is important given the high rates of unwanted sexual experiences and subsequent negative mental health consequences. Furthermore, the lack of effective skills-based sexual assault prevention programs on college campuses is an important issue to address. …

Maintaining Consistency Between A Design Model And Its Implementation, Hector M. Chavez Aug 2015

Maintaining Consistency Between A Design Model And Its Implementation, Hector M. Chavez

Dissertations

Software design models are increasingly being used as part of the software development process as analysis and design artifacts and to automatically generate code that developers can further modify or extend, greatly expediting the software development process. This, however, has introduced the challenge of maintaining consistency between the design models and their implementation as they evolve during the development process. Traditional software testing and verification techniques have been well studied in the past, and they are an integral part of many software development projects, however, they are not well suited for consistency checking between a design model and its implementation. …

Language Policy In Turkey And Its Effect On The Kurdish Language, Sevda Arslan Aug 2015

Language Policy In Turkey And Its Effect On The Kurdish Language, Sevda Arslan

Masters Theses

For many decades the Kurdish language was ignored and banned from public use and Turkish became the lingua franca for all citizens to speak. This way, the Turkish state sought to create a nation-state based on one language and attempted to eliminate the use of other languages, particularly Kurdish, through severe regulations and prohibitions.

Firstly, this thesis traces the language planning policies in the 20th century which resulted in the invisibilization and denial of Kurdish through an attempted linguicide. Through decade long oppressions which resulted in mass killings, arrests, re-location of Kurds, monopolization of education in Turkish and eventually the …
