Preparation And Properties Of 3,3’-Disubstituted-2,2’ – Three-Carbon-Atom Bridged Biphenyls, Allan E. Nader
Preparation And Properties Of 3,3’-Disubstituted-2,2’ – Three-Carbon-Atom Bridged Biphenyls, Allan E. Nader
Masters Theses
Introduction
The configuration of biphenyl has been treated in numerous articles and reviews (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 16, 22, 23). In particular the configuration of 2,2'-bridged biphenyl derivatives has obtained attention. The synthesis of an optically active 2,2'-three-carbon-atom-bridged biphenyl possessing an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 250 mμ has been reported by Iffland and Siegel (15). These properties require first, a non-planar configuration for the molecule and second, significant inter-ring conjugation as demonstrated by ultraviolet spectra.
Several 2,2'-three-atom-bridged biphenyls have been prepared by Ahmed and Hall (2, 3) in order to obtain some measure of their specific rotation. The use …

An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between reading disability and defective articulation. An attempt has been made to determine whether or not children with functionally defective articulation have difficulty in reading.
It is conceivable that a deficiency in one or several areas of language development might impede or retard a child's academic achievement and might interfere with his emotional adjustment. This study was, therefore, undertaken, first to determine whether or not there is a difference in the reading ability of speech defective children as determined by valid and reliable measures, and the reading ability of …
Specific Language Disability As Related To Clinical Failure In Public School Speech Therapy, G. Lorraine Hansen
Specific Language Disability As Related To Clinical Failure In Public School Speech Therapy, G. Lorraine Hansen
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Background of the Problem
Introduction. The term language as used in this thesis refers to the complex symbolic processes of speaking, reading, and writing. Speech is the primary process of language. Reading and writing are secondary processes formed by written symbols which reflect the primary symbols of speech. Due to the integral relationship of these elements, a facility or disability in one might affect the others. If this is true, then it might also be possible that one currently existing factor could affect the entire area of language including any, or all, of the interrelated processes. It is …

The Teaching Of Reading In The United States, Blanche O. Bush
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The history of the teaching of reading in the United States is directly related to the background influences of the period. The changing institutions, religious, political and economic, are reflected in the aims, materials and procedures of reading in each era. In this paper the history of the teaching of reading has been traced from the early colonial period to the present time.

Toward Horizons Of Reading In The Aerospace Age, Barbara F. Edwards
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Milieu. We live in an age when reading is a subject of concern to the man on the street as well as to the scholar. The "This Week" section of recent Sunday newspapers serves as only one indication of the public interest in our subject. We live also in a time when scientific reasoning by a staff or team of administrators, teachers, and researchers is not only possible, but encouraged. We live at a time when the factors of group dynamics and individual counseling (6) are being considered as important elements in learning processes. In these things, all of us …

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …

Developing Mental Content Through Creative Activities, Martha Barrett Newell
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Each of us seeks the approval of our peers, and this is a natural desire of children, too. But, as adults we seem to have forgotten the warmth of response to the fact that "I made it myself." There is magic in creation, and a very special kind of magic to the child who senses that he is indeed part of what he produces. Everything, from the molded handprint of the earnest kindergartener (Do you not still have one of these pieces of loveliness . . .?) to the finished mural of the high school student, has in it a …

A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
Masters Theses
Preface
This study is prepared to establish a method of evaluating supervisory training. An attempt to evaluate the following hypotheses will be considered: (1) There is a method of selecting the basic performance areas of a first line supervisor. (2) There are acceptable standards of performance in the basic area. (3) Performance appraisals prior to the introduction of training will determine sub-standard performance in the selected areas. (4) Follow-up performance appraisals will indicate the effectiveness of training in improving performance without undue contamination of the criteria by other influences.
During the study other areas of investigation to be examined are: …

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)
Faculty Publications 1957-61 is the first major compilation of the publications of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Compilations like this one are not unique. Nearly all the major universities, as well as many of the smaller institutions of higher education, have prepared them for a number of years. It seemed reasonable, when the enterprise was first planned, for Western Michigan University to publish the compilation as one of the Faculty Contributions of the School of Graduate Studies.

A Survey Of Merit Rating In Industry, N. K. Nahavandi
Masters Theses
Introduction
Personnel administration is but one phase of industrial management. It has been defined as:
"Personnel administration means organizing and treating people at work so that their effort. singly and collectively, will bring the best results possible. This requires quite specific information about the employee and his job. It implies knowing what the employee is doing, and how and why it differs from what is wanted of him. It implies having some idea of the employees' capacity in relation to the responsibilities of his present assignment. It implies having a measure of the employers' contribution to the organization, and understanding …

An Investigation Of The Identification Of One’S Own Voice By Speech Defective And Normal Speaking Children, Robert L. Frankenberger
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study is to test the vocal self-identification ability of children with functional defects of articulation as compared to children with normal speech. An attempt has been made to determine whether the functional articulatory defective child is able to distinguish his recorded voice from voices of other children who possess no articulatory defects.
