An Examination Of Countervailing Forces In Canadian Foreign Policy, James F. Hettinger Aug 1973

An Examination Of Countervailing Forces In Canadian Foreign Policy, James F. Hettinger

Masters Theses

Preface

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau pointed out in 1968 that some seventy percent of Canadian foreign policy is directly affected by the relationship of Canada and the United States. Trudeau expressed hope that ways could be found to derive maximum independence from the remaining thirty percent. At the same time, Trudeau pointed out the need to decrease the presence of the United States in Canada's foreign policy. One of the ways Trudeau proposed to meet these objectives was the expanded use of countervailing forces. Since the time of this statement, Trudeau has turned words to actions, seeking a wider diversification …

Conflicting Perspectives And Policies: An Analysis Of The Failure Of The United Nations Capital Development Fund, Marjon Vashti Kamara

Masters Theses

The United Nations Capital Development Fund was established by the U. N. General Assembly under Resolution 2168 (XXI) of 13 December 1966. Its expressed purpose was to assist developing countries in the development of their economies by supplementing existing sources of capital assistance by means of grants and loans, particularly long-term loans made free of interest or at low interest rates.

More than its actual or potential role, the Fund has a symbolic meaning for the developing nations. To them, it represents the best hope of overcoming their problem of capital shortage. It symbolizes also the expected role of the …

Teaching Reading In The Secondary School: "Readiness And The All-School Reading Program.", Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In the following paragraphs are listed a number of ideas for bringing attention to reading in the school. As the admen say, if you have their attention, half the battle is won. This article is directed to the typical teacher of reading in a school where not enough such attention is being paid to the cause of reading improvement. Our conviction is that the teacher of reading cannot accomplish much by working with a few students at a time in developmental or corrective reading. Our suggestions are meant to encourage the one or two members of the faculty who are …

Experimentation To Develop Procedures To Be Used In The Investigation Of The Effects Of Restriction On The Unmodified Dna Of The Bacteriophage Lamda, John Haynes Jun 1973

Experimentation To Develop Procedures To Be Used In The Investigation Of The Effects Of Restriction On The Unmodified Dna Of The Bacteriophage Lamda, John Haynes

Honors Theses

The results of experimentation approximately twenty years ago with variuos bacteriophages by Ralston and Krueger16, Anderson and Felix1, Luria and Human12, and by Bertani and Weigle2 have shown that the host range of a given phage depends directly on the bacterial strain on which the phage has last propagated. This event came to be known as host-induced modification or host-controlled variation. As this phage host range is controlled by the host environment and can be altered from one generation to another it has, according to Luria, made microbiology "the last stronghold of Lamarckism" …

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to indicate the reactions of the paper industry and its associated industries to metrication, standardization, and their effects on the industry. In this thesis a history of the metric system is given. The metric system, as it relates to the paper industry and its associated industries, is discussed. Echoes From The Field, Joe R. Chapel

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The need for a multi-disciplined approach to the diagnosis and treatment of the disabled learner has been given lip service for many years by various departments on university campuses. The first multi-clinic team put this dream into reality at Western Michigan University in the spring of 1972. Subsequently there have been five multi-clinic cases.

Reading In The Secondary School, Kenneth Vandermeulen Apr 1973

Reading In The Secondary School, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A few years ago a reading consultant in a large high school was given a problem to solve. Students in the school averaged two years above the national norms in reading performance, as shown by an all-school Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension Test. Yet, social studies teachers and English teachers told the administration and the reading consultant that these students were not able to read their textbooks effectively, were in serious trouble on examinations, and did not seem to show clear understanding of the ideas presented for class discussion. Teachers who felt they had to maintain a certain minimum level of academic …

In-Service Reading Programs: Are They Relevant?, Nicholas P. Criscuolo Apr 1973

In-Service Reading Programs: Are They Relevant?, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Colleges and universities are presently launching a broad-based attack on improving their pre-service programs in the teaching of reading. The need for such an attack was evidenced by the first Harvard Carnegie Study (1) which disclosed inadequacies in pre-service reading courses. This report also revealed the failure of colleges to provide for practical approaches to the teaching of reading by prospective teachers.
