On Teaching Reading And Writing For Functional Literacy, Solomon Ogbodum Unoh Jan 1977

On Teaching Reading And Writing For Functional Literacy, Solomon Ogbodum Unoh

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The teaching of reading and writing can be approached from various angles, and with varying degrees of emphasis. Teaching reading and writing to primary school children is not the same as teaching reading and writing to illiterate adults, minimally literate adults, secondary and college students, and university students. True, certain fundamental principles have to be observed in all these teaching-learning situations but there are basic differences in aims, in ability to learn and so forth, which have to be taken into account. In this article, the teaching of reading and writing will be discussed with particular reference to the achievement …

Professional Concerns: Reading Comprehension And Essay Writing, R. Baird Shuman, Glenda C. Petrini Jan 1977

Professional Concerns: Reading Comprehension And Essay Writing, R. Baird Shuman, Glenda C. Petrini

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Glenda C. Petrini, a Social Studies teacher at Thoreau Intermediate School in Vienna, Virginia, had tried for five years to teach the inquiry method to her students before she tried using reading skills as a vehicle for the comprehension of inquiry. In her article which follows, Ms. Petrini tells how she used the knowledge which she gained of reading skills to instruct her students in ways that would significantly strengthen their essay writing. Ms. Petrini presents convincing evidence that the teaching of reading and the teaching of writing can be combined very effectively.

Perspectives For Moral Education In Higher Education, William P. Frost Jan 1977

Perspectives For Moral Education In Higher Education, William P. Frost

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Much of the literature on moral education is of a psychological nature with an emphasis on the individual's responsibility to the challenges of the social environment. The valuable is perceived in terms of (1) the development of the person as (2) a member of society. These publications fail to identify perspectives according to which living and growing become meaningful. Paul Kurtz recognizes this shortcoming.

Many people in post-modern society -young and old - lack direction in their lives, a meaning or purpose. Often it is the " liberated" individuals who seem most vulnerable to a confusion of values and to …

Agls And General Education - Reflections By The President, A. J. Carlson Jan 1977

Agls And General Education - Reflections By The President, A. J. Carlson

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The Association for General and Liberal Studies serves as "a forum for professional people concerned with undergraduate general and liberal education in each of the several divisions of the curriculum." At least, that is what the Bylaws indicate. But as I talk to people about the organization several more specific questions keep emerging: " What exactly is AGLS anyway?" "Why should I spend $10 a year to support AGLS?" " What is Interdisciplinary Perspectives?" These questions suggest that the Association has as its first problem - to use the current jargon - a very large "communication gap."

The Listening Journal: An Instructional Strategy For A Listening Awareness Program, Andrew D. Wolvin Jan 1977

The Listening Journal: An Instructional Strategy For A Listening Awareness Program, Andrew D. Wolvin

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The need for training in listening is a problem which has baffled educators for years. Studies demonstrate the tremendous amount of time that we spend in listening within our communication time. Paul T. Rankin's classic study gave us some working percentages, percentages which have held up in other, more recent, research projects. Through his analysis, Rankin discovered that we spend 75% of our time in oral communication. Of that time, approximately 45% is spent in listening and 30% of our time in speaking.

Remediation For The Poor College Reader: Probabilities Of Success, Mark E. Thompson Jan 1977

Remediation For The Poor College Reader: Probabilities Of Success, Mark E. Thompson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading is a most complex form of behavior, yet it is basic to all academic tasks. One must be able to successfully interpret the meaning of words to function in the academic environment. Unfortunately, there are thousands of freshmen annually entering our institutions of higher learning without the reading skills needed to complete college level work. This problem is most acute in two-year colleges with a student population that is relatively disadvantaged compared to students in four-year colleges. Two year colleges have more high-risk students in terms of their chances to complete degree aspirations than do four-year colleges and universities.

Innovative Adult General Education: The Detroit Experiment, David W. Hartman, Richard T. Bohan, Otto Feinstein, Sandra Loehr, Linda Michalowski, F. Richard Place

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Increasingly, universities have confronted a changing population of undergraduate students. They find themselves under considerable scrutiny, from legislators, taxpayers and potential students. Concurrently, the impetus to re-appraise the mission of undergraduate education, so as to insure its accommodation in our changing society, is in need of refocusing. The issue of who comes to the university, and for what end, stands foresquare in the face of faculties, administrators and elected guardians of higher education, now more than ever before. Again we are charged with providing curricula and format that are relevant enough to retain the attention of today's new student, that …

Improving Humanities Education: Philosophy And Design, Ronald W. Carstens Jan 1977

Improving Humanities Education: Philosophy And Design, Ronald W. Carstens

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Both the Hebrew notion of the fall and the Greek concept of hubris have taught us that human endeavors are essentially acts of pride and possibly acts of arrogance. I suppose that a paper entitled "Improving Humanities Education" would be judged to be as at least impertinent in as much as it suggests that the teaching of the humanities can or ought to be improved. But I believe it is possible to improve the way that body of human intellectual and artistic study of man as man we call the humanities is addressed and actualized in the formal process of …

The Human Experience, Dimensions Of Love: An Experiment In Interdisciplinary Studies, Patricia Ernenwein Zevin, Gene Sager, Brenda Montiel

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Dedicated to the support of interdisciplinary studies as intellectually sound and academically necessary, this paper is an expanded version of the presentation made by the authors during the 17th Annual Conference of the Association of General and Liberal Studies (October 27-29, 1977, Ogden, Utah). The subject of the conference, "General Education: Diversity by Design," seemed to the Interdisciplinary Studies team at Palomar College (including, in addition to the authors, Donna Tryon, Art, Richard Peacock, Film, and Don Piche, Philosophy) to be particularly appropriate to efforts there to establish a series of interdisciplinary courses in a thematic, team-taught design focusing on …

Opinion Writing For Publication, Richard P. Bailey Jan 1977

Opinion Writing For Publication, Richard P. Bailey

Perspectives (1969-1979)

So, when the "writing crisis" hit the pedagogical fan, I was ready with an "innovative" method (so dear to the hearts of educators) for teaching writing. What had lurked in my mind for years pushed its way from subconscious to conscious - i.e ., the only completely satisfying reward for good writing is publication. Students who are given a better reason for writing than the bored approval of a graduate student and/or an arbitrary grade by a young instructor marking papers and time until a section of English Lit. 5,000 opens - students with appetites whetted by the dream of …

Human Security Or National Defense: The Question Of Conversion, Bruce Birchard

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Anti-War Work By Discouragement Of Warriors: A Critique Of Anti-War Tactics Used Among Naval Personnel In The Vietnam War, Orabelle Connally Jan 1977

Anti-War Work By Discouragement Of Warriors: A Critique Of Anti-War Tactics Used Among Naval Personnel In The Vietnam War, Orabelle Connally

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

"Wars will end when men have ceased to fight" was a popular slogan of the anti-Vietnam War movement. It sounded quite practical and almost true on its face. However, we now have considerable information about wars and how people have refused to fight, and the relationship between them is not well described by this phrase. The specific military technology in use, the social organization of military authority, and the division of labor in producing war, all make a difference in the possibility of stopping a war by many refusals to fight. Campaigns emphasizing this tactic may even strengthen the organization …

Common Roots And Functions Of The Warfare And Welfare State, David G. Gil Jan 1977

Common Roots And Functions Of The Warfare And Welfare State, David G. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Warfare and welfare are usually assumed to serve contradictory ends and to hie rooted in antithetical values, institutions and dynamics. In this essay, I propose to challenge this notion and to advance, instead, the thesis that, in spite of significant differences betwcn them, warfare and welfare serc, nevertheless, identical and colilementary functions, and are both rooted in identical socittal values, institutions and dynamics.

A Disarmed World: Problems In Imaging The Future, Elise Boulding Jan 1977

A Disarmed World: Problems In Imaging The Future, Elise Boulding

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

One of the major handicaps to scholars, activists and would-be policy makers associated with the post-World War II peace research and peace action movements has been the inability to construct coherent and believable images of a post military industrial United States society. Even at the height of the economics of disarmament studies in the I960s' the most that economists could demonstrate was that disarmament could take place without severe economic dislocations, and that resources released from arms could be used for improving the global standard of living. The new peace research movement was also producing books in the sixties showing …

Influencing Welfare/Warfare Priorities Through The New Budgetary Process, Ann Blalock Jan 1977

Influencing Welfare/Warfare Priorities Through The New Budgetary Process, Ann Blalock

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In the previous article, Weinert challenged social workers, and other professionals in the area of social welfare, to commit themselves to greater collective political action in the interest of substantial social change. He suggested that there are many options for movement in that direction. This article briefly discusses one incremental option within the established political system, intervention within the new Congressional budgetary process. This is not an insignificant strategy. Its purpose is to influence the way the national budget is constructed. The budget incorporates to an important degree the society's prevailing definition of its priorities. Furthermore, future policy alternatives are …

The Welfare State Within The Military, Charles Maynard, Ann Blalock Jan 1977

The Welfare State Within The Military, Charles Maynard, Ann Blalock

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Much has been written concerning the extent to which contemporary industrialized societies meet the accepted criteria of a "welfare state". By contrast, the literature on the welfare aspects of the military as an institution within societies is comparatively sparse. Yet internally, military establishments often exhibit many welfare state attributes. Within the military's organizational territory and authority, members are provided with a wide spectrum of comprehensive universal entitlements--social, economic, occupational, educational, and medical. The formal parameters of the U.S. military establishment's welfare entitlements give the undeniable appearance of a bonafide welfare state whose provision is significantly more benevolent and equitable than …

Social Welfare And Some Implications Of Non-Violence, Mulford Q. Sibley Jan 1977

Social Welfare And Some Implications Of Non-Violence, Mulford Q. Sibley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A new journal has made its appearance. It is called Soldier of Fortune and is devoted to the concerns of "professional adventurers"--that is, to those who would like to become hired violent fighters in various parts of the world. The journal opens its columns to their advertisements: "Ex-marine seeks employment as mercenary, full-time or job contract, prefers South or Central America but all offers considered." "Experienced mature fighter/seeks assignment anywhere.... " In defending his journal from the charge of encouraging brutality, the founder says: "After all, booze is brutal, cars are brutal, sex is brutal. There's a need for guns …
