Violence And General Education, Alan Downes, Wolf D. Fuhrig, J. Warrren Brinkman, John Noonan
Perspectives (1969-1979)
In this era when technology transforms the world at an accelerating pace, offering us ever-larger magnitudes of potential disaster, it is questionable whether my students can survive the next fifty years if they remain in the grip of the traditional orthodoxies, the folk knowledge, the myths which allow the same elites to retain control. Only if my students are trained to order their priorities and test their predictions free of the covert command and metaphysical traps of ideological language-only then can they see the alternative options open to them. The ambient status quo is, after all, merely one violent option. …
General Education In The Two Year College- Is It Meeting The Needs Of The Student And Society?, Joseph P. Cosand
General Education In The Two Year College- Is It Meeting The Needs Of The Student And Society?, Joseph P. Cosand
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Featured Address presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting, which was held at Southern Illinois University, October 21st through 23rd, 1971.
It is essential that we understand the philosophy and objectives of the various types of colleges and universities- both two- and four-year and that each type has equal status with the others. There can be no status continuum--each has its own responsibilities to the youth and adults to be served and each must then be held so accountable. The Community College can no more be cast in the image of the university …
The University, The Student And The Wizard Of Oz, Lynwood H. Bartley
The University, The Student And The Wizard Of Oz, Lynwood H. Bartley
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The teacher who demonstrates that choice is inevitable in the human situation and helps each student realize his responsibility to choose what he becomes, is doing an inestimable service for his students. Having become aware of this choice, the student learns that he has more control over what he sees, what he does, and how he interprets.
I do not assume that making someone aware presumes the absence of facts; I do assume the interrelation between facts. I do not want to see teaching or learning as a process move any further in the direction described by Marshall McLuhan, who …

The 46th Street Site And The Occurrence Of Allegan Ware In Southwestern Michigan, Margaret B. Rogers
The 46th Street Site And The Occurrence Of Allegan Ware In Southwestern Michigan, Margaret B. Rogers
Masters Theses
The 46th Street site is located on a steep bank twenty feet above the Kalamazoo River in the Allegan State Forest in Allegan County, Michigan. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the site was occupied about A. D. 1200. The settlement pattern and ecological data for the 46th Street site points to the conclusion that this was a winter hunting camp of the Chippewa type. A comparison of the pottery from the 46th Street site with the pottery from the Fenneville site which is located in Manilus Twonship, Allegan County and dates from about A. D. 700, yields some interferences about variation …

Hegel And The Rebellion And Counter-Rebellion Of Youth, Rudolf J. Siebert
Hegel And The Rebellion And Counter-Rebellion Of Youth, Rudolf J. Siebert
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Can the philosopher and educator Hegel help American youth overcome romantic subjectivity and liberate itself toward a rational and free existence? Can he help them in the dramatic social development from civil society to the real non-repressive supra-national or even continental state? To lead Hegel and American youth into a new and honest encounter would be very worthwhile and necessary, but difficult. This new encounter would presuppose the success of an even more difficult task. This would be to let American youth take root in that healthy confidence, which Hegel characterized as threefold: 1) confidence is science, 2) faith in …
Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh
Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh
Perspectives (1969-1979)
One of the most distinctive characteristics of the modern university is the tremendous emphasis placed on research, on "expanding the frontiers of knowledge." The faculty has argued, and the university authorities have in many cases accepted, that research is the only worth-while academic activity and that the university largely exists simply to promote it. In its name the faculty has sometimes even ignored, with official connivance, many of its academic obligations. Although, from the standpoint of the university, teaching is more important, research has become a new industry, a new god whose directives, it is believed, only the illiterate could …

Needed For The 1970'S: An Educational Policy For The Social Sciences*, Claude S. Phillips Jr.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The list of efforts at intercultural education is almost limitless. The impact of these efforts has been so meager as to be startling. Conferences are still being convened to study the problem of how to incorporate intercultural studies into the educational system.
