War, Peace, And "The System": Three Perspectives, Paul Adams
War, Peace, And "The System": Three Perspectives, Paul Adams
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social workers have sometimes seen war as part of a larger system and as linked to other forms of violence or social evil. This article considers three kinds of analysis which identify different systems (capitalism, patriarchy, and exterminism), see the links in different ways, and lead to different practical conclusions. Each perspective is examined in terms of its capacity to explain the phenomena it describes and to identify a social change strategy that can eliminate them. It is suggested that social workers may be professionally predisposed to select among these perspectives for reasons other than their explanatory power or strategic …

Flotation Data Sampling Strategies In Archaeological Research: An Experiment At The Elam Site (20ae195), Allegan County, Michigan, Brian David Deroo
Flotation Data Sampling Strategies In Archaeological Research: An Experiment At The Elam Site (20ae195), Allegan County, Michigan, Brian David Deroo
Masters Theses
Studies of prehistoric Native American subsistence patterns have benefited greatly from data recovered through the technique of flotation, which allows investigators to recover small scale organic remains which would otherwise be missed using standard excavation procedures. Using data recovered through flotation researchers have been able to more fairly evaluate the role of plant foods, both wild and cultivated, in the aboriginal diet.
A common method of obtaining a flotation sample is to define a column through the center of the cultural feature or midden and removing a specified volume of soil matrix (usually 10 liters) from this column. This thesis …

The Paleoethnobotany Of Schwerdt (20ae127): An Early Fifteenth Century Encampment In The Lower Kalamazoo River Valley, Gregory R. Walz
Masters Theses
Carbonized macrobotanical remains from the Schwerdt Site, an Upper Mississippian sturgeon fishery in the Lower Kalamazoo River Valley are identified and analyzed in terms of their implications for localized subsistence-settlement systems operating during the Berrien Phase in southwestern Michigan. The exploitation of wild plant foods at this limited-activity, spring sturgeon fishery and the environmental composition of the site environs are reconstructed from their representation in flotation samples derived from excavated feature and midden contexts.
Botanical data indicate a strong wetland-aquatic orientation in plant procurement, with aquatic tubers being the primary plant resource exploited at the site. Data from several sites …
Purity Of Purpose: The Aesthetics Of Bernard Of Clairvaux Based On His Monastic Anthropology, Daniel Marcel La Corte
Purity Of Purpose: The Aesthetics Of Bernard Of Clairvaux Based On His Monastic Anthropology, Daniel Marcel La Corte
Masters Theses
Questions concerning Bernard of Clairvaux’s view of art and architecture have been answered primarily from his words on monastic art found in his work the Apologia. Some scholars have taken these statements out of context to their intended audience. Others have placed them firmly within the framework of his monastic vocation. More recently, scholars have analyzed the treatise in a broader context by using the Apologia to explore the role of art in the Middle Ages. None of these scholars question the fundamental motivation for Bernard’s view on art and the role it plays in the hierarchy of the …

Conservative Welfare Reform Proposals And The Reality Of Subemployment, Robert Sheak, David D. Dabelko
Conservative Welfare Reform Proposals And The Reality Of Subemployment, Robert Sheak, David D. Dabelko
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article analyzes and critiques conservative welfare proposals and their assumptions. The concept of subemployment is introduced along with relevant data to identify the nature of the job problem in the U.S. since the early 1970s. Particular emphasis is placed upon the magnitude of employment difficulties during the 1980s. The article concludes that without a major job creation component, conservative welfare reforms intensify rather than ameliorate the subsistence living conditions of the poor.
The Introductory Course In The Undergraduate Social Work Curriculum, Philip R. Popple
The Introductory Course In The Undergraduate Social Work Curriculum, Philip R. Popple
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The content of the Introduction to Social Welfare course in 168 bachelor of social work (BSW) programs is analyzed including major concepts presented, research results and statistical data presented or assigned, theoretical perspectives used, and the perceived importance of, and methods used to develop values. Several problems with the introductory course are identified: no set body of content, minimal support by research and statistical data, frequent lack of explicit theoretical content, and an overriding emphasis on developing values. More uniformity in content is necessary in order to facilitate the development of good teaching materials and to provide a firm foundation …

The Privatization Of Housing In A Declining Economy: The Case Of Stepping Stone Housing, Judy Aulette
The Privatization Of Housing In A Declining Economy: The Case Of Stepping Stone Housing, Judy Aulette
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The demand for housing for poor people in the United States has grown significantly in recent years. In response to the crisis, the federal government has recommended that housing policy should move in the direction of privatization, thereby removing the responsibility for housing from the federal government to the private sector. Stepping Stone Housing is a new program that is an example of privatization. Public housing residents who had been targeted by the program were surveyed and several problems with Stepping Stone Housing were discovered. The findings suggest that privatization may hurt poor people.

World View Theory And Science Education Research, William W. Cobern
World View Theory And Science Education Research, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
This monograph is timely for the membership of NARST. As science educators probe teaching and learning in an endeavor to make sense of learning in classrooms, there is a need for theoretical frameworks to enable new questions to be posed and a correspondingly fresh set of responses to be obtained. World view is a framework that can be applied to research on teaching and learning science and fits well with the trend towards studies that are interpretive in nature. The number of science education researchers using ethnographic techniques in science education research is increasing steadily and theories and methods that …

98-An Inventory Of Artifacts And Summary Of Communications Found In The Collections Of The Kalamazoo Public Museum And Associated With The Historic Period Indian Cemetery (2dkz118) Along The Kalamazoo River In Section 27, Comstock Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, William M. Cremin
Reports of Investigations
In 1989, I received a call from Cheryl Lyon-Jenness of the Kalamazoo Public Museum who requested that I examine a collection of Historic Period Indian artifacts that museum personnel desired to prepare for exhibition. She informed me that the museum had purchased the collection from an area resident same years ago and that the documentation surrounding the purchase suggested that it had been retrieved from an Indian burial ground on the Kalamazoo River.
My examination of the items comprising the collection did indeed reveal that these were objects of personal adornment such as are typically found with human remains of …

Reports of Investigations
During Spring 1990, archaeologists from Western Michigan University conducted test excavations at a series of site loci occupying morainal uplands overlooking the wetland-choked Lower Galien River in the southwest corner of Lower Michigan. While the results of our program of research have been previously reported (Cremin 1990), it is our intent here to elaborate upon the potential significance of two observations made on site 20BE410 and not included in the project completion report prepared last year. Specifically, we refer to the recovery of a carbOnized kernel of developed Eastern Complex maize or corn retrieved from deep within Feature 6, a …

100-An Archaeological Survey Of The Kenzie Creek-Valley Power Transmission Line In Cass And Van Buren Counties, Michigan, William M. Cremin, Gregory R. Walz, Timoth D. Knapp
Reports of Investigations
Pursuant to the establishment of a cooperative agreement between Indiana Michigan Power Company of Fort Wayne, Indiana (dated 23 Apr 91) and Western Michigan University (accepted on 30 Apr 91) authorizing a Phase I archaeological assessment of the Kenzie Creek-Valley power transmission line in Cass and Van Buren counties, Michigan, archaeologists in t~e Department of Anthropology initiated a literature, documents, and site file search and between 1-6 May conducted on-site evaluation of the project area in order to determine whether proposed construction activities would have an adverse impact on potentially significant archaeological resources. There follows a report of our program …
