Effects Of Fluid Consumption Volumes On Fluid Retention During Sodium-Aided Hyperhydration Protocols, Shelby L. Greene, Elizaveta Roslanova, David M. Morris
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Numerous investigations have supported the use of sodium-aided hyperhydration to improve hydration status and exercise performance in the heat. Sodium-aided hyperhydration studies typically utilize fluid volumes ranging from 10 - 25 mL ∙ kg bm-1; however, optimum fluid consumption volumes have not been identified. While it may seem logical that larger fluid consumption volumes would promote greater hyperhydration, excessive expansion of plasma volume could stimulate high-pressure baroreceptors and promote excessive diuresis. PURPOSE: To compare the effects of different fluid consumption volumes on fluid retention during a sodium-aided hyperhydration protocol. METHODS: Urine excretion was measured during four …

In healthy individuals, physiological functions are regulated by complex integration of multiple control systems, feedback loops, and regulatory processes that enable an individual to adapt to everyday life. The control systems exist at cellular, organ, and systemic levels, operating at various time scales. Entropy analysis can be utilized to assess complexity of physiological systems, including postural control. Higher complexity is associated with better physiological functioning and loss of complexity is associated with pathologies. Increased postural sway is reported following concussion. PURPOSE: Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine postural control dynamics utilizing postural sway and complexity across …

CLINCAL PRESENTATION & EXAM: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an inherited, neuromuscular disorder that affects approximately 1 in 5000 live male births. It is primarily characterized by muscular degeneration due to dystrophin deficiency, a protein found in muscles. There are several varieties of muscular dystrophy disorders—another common one is Becker muscular dystrophy, caused by a truncated, but partially functional DMD gene. DMD begins during childhood, with symptoms starting between 3 and 5 years of age, and it gradually progresses throughout the lifespan of an individual. The first apparent physical sign is an abnormal, waddling-like motion while walking, indication of a …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sedentary populations with obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) have presented with impaired vascular dysfunction, including vasodilation reduced 40-50%. The mechanisms of vascular endothelial dysfunction has also been associated to the bioavailability of nitric oxide levels and in metabolic compromised individuals the diminished content of endothelial NO are a prime mechanistic target for study. PURPOSE: We hypothesize that decreased reactive hyperemia observed in MetSyn compared to age matched-control patients are primarily due to mechanistic dysfunction of the eNOS pathway and lower Insulin Sensitivity Index (ISI). METHODS: 30 participants (10 MetSyn and 20 Controls) completed brachial FMD testing and vascular …

Chronic consumption of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in the general population. Importantly, with the growing abundance of processed foods, dietary intake of Pi in the United States has doubled the daily-recommended amount. However, the influence of acute consumption of high Pi on the cardiovascular system is not clearly understood, with equivocal results reported. Shuto et al. demonstrated that acute consumption of high Pi results in an impairment of endothelial function in healthy subjects, whereas a recent study by Levac et al. has refuted this finding. Moreover, these …

Fractional Synthetic Rate And Markers Of Protein Turnover Are Altered In The Diaphragms Of Cachectic Mice, Conner A. Benson, Nicholas P. Greene, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Tyrone A. Washington, Richard A. Perry, Michael P. Wiggs
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cancer cachexia, a wasting syndrome characterized by rapid skeletal muscle wasting and fat loss, directly accounts for up to 20-40% of cancer-related deaths. All muscles, including respiratory muscles, are susceptible to atrophy because cancer cachexia is a systemic disease. Atrophy of the primary breathing muscle, the diaphragm, can lead to respiratory distress, which is commonly associated with a cachectic phenotype. Indeed, the diaphragm is more susceptible to atrophy in certain conditions, but little is known about the effects of cancer-cachexia on protein turnover in the diaphragm. Therefore, investigations into the alterations in protein turnover could provide insight to the molecular …

Reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) is linked to functional disturbances following concussion. Since cardiac vagal tone (an index of cardiac health) is associated with disturbances in the autonomic nervous system, deficits in CBF are likely associated with cardiac vagal tone impairment post-concussion. PURPOSE: The current study examined cardiac vagal tone and CBF on days 3, 21 and 90 following concussion in comparison to non-injured control athletes. The association between these two variables was also evaluated. METHODS: Concussed male and female collegiate athletes were evaluated day-3 (N=29), day-21 (N=25) and day-90 (N=17) post concussion and matched controls were enrolled (N=29). A …
