Use Of Objective Tools For Early Detection Of Parkinson’S Symptoms, Brett Weinstein, Alex Rothstein, Danny Chan, Andreana Zazzarino, Brianna Singh, Meredith Fagan, Dominique Torres, Charles Siguenza, Rosemary Gallagher

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by asymmetrical motor symptoms that are difficult to detect early, thus the need for more sensitive tools. People with early PD (PwPD) participate in high level physical activity, are susceptible to injury, and in need of exercise professionals (EP). However, assessment tools used by EPs for healthy populations may be underutilized in PD. We suggest these tools can quantify early lower extremity (LE) motor impairments otherwise not found during the Five Times Sit to Stand test (FTSTS), commonly used to assess LE strength and function in the rehabilitation setting. PURPOSE: Examine LE asymmetry, force and …

Validity And Reliability Of The Wattbike For The Wingate Anaerobic Test, Bernie F. Acevedo, Alex Rothstein, Michele Aquino, Christian Maia, Robert M. Otto, John Petrizzo, John Wygand, Amerigo Rossi, John Handrakis May 2025

Validity And Reliability Of The Wattbike For The Wingate Anaerobic Test, Bernie F. Acevedo, Alex Rothstein, Michele Aquino, Christian Maia, Robert M. Otto, John Petrizzo, John Wygand, Amerigo Rossi, John Handrakis

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) is widely recognized for assessing anaerobic power and capacity. While the Lode cycle ergometer has been validated for the WAnT, the Wattbike's validity and reliability require further investigation. PURPOSE: To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Wattbike for conducting the WAnT by comparing its performance metrics in the "30-second test" setting to the WAnT on the Lode cycle ergometer. METHODS: 11 participants (male = 7, female = 4; age: Mean = 23 yrs 2.9 yrs; height: Mean = 171.5 cm 8.7 cm; weight: Mean = 76.8 kg 13.9 kg) ± ± ± Familiarization trials …

ABSTRACT

Whole-room indirect calorimetry (WRIC) serves as the gold standard for measuring human energy expenditure (EE) including 24hr EE and its components. It has been applied to multiple research fields to determine EE in energy balance studies. Due to response times in WRIC, for exercise …

The Impact Of Weighted Vest Exercise On Central Hemodynamics, Paige Williams, Jacob H. Greenberg, Kevin S. Heffernan May 2025

The Impact Of Weighted Vest Exercise On Central Hemodynamics, Paige Williams, Jacob H. Greenberg, Kevin S. Heffernan

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Exercise enthusiasts use ergogenic aids, such as weighted vests, to improve health and enhance exercise adaptations. Previous studies suggest that weighted vest use during exercise may influence peripheral blood pressure (BP). While peripheral BP provides insight into cardiovascular health, central blood pressure (cBP)—though more challenging to assess—is a more accurate index of cardiovascular stress. Recent advancements have enabled noninvasive estimation of cBP using validated modeling techniques. However, the impact of weighted vest use on estimated cBP remains unclear. PURPOSE: To examine differences in estimated cBP with and without a weighted vest at self-selected exercise intensity. METHODS: In two …

Application Of The Sports Technology Research Network Validation Framework To Evaluate Wearable Heart Rate Monitors For The Management Of Parkinson's Disease, Hayley E. Whitney, Victoria Wagner, Hope Flanegin, Ryan Gross, Dhruv Seshadri

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects over 6.1 million people worldwide and is characterized by progressive dopaminergic neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra, contributing to motor symptoms and reduced quality of life. Aerobic exercise at intensities near 80% HRmax promotes dopamine release and neuroplasticity, making heart rate (HR)-guided training a promising therapeutic strategy. Although the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is commonly used to estimate intensity, it lacks precision for monitoring real-time training load. Wearable HR monitors offer an objective alternative; however, limited validation exists in exercise contexts relevant to clinical populations such as PD. PURPOSE: To assess the accuracy of three commercial …

Evaluating Qualitative Data To Develop Injury Prevention Routines Among Adolescent Softball Players, Malayna H. Leopold, Hayley E. Whitney, Joseph Amitrano, Jesssica Warner, Dhruv Seshadri May 2025

Evaluating Qualitative Data To Develop Injury Prevention Routines Among Adolescent Softball Players, Malayna H. Leopold, Hayley E. Whitney, Joseph Amitrano, Jesssica Warner, Dhruv Seshadri

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Overuse injuries are a growing concern in adolescent softball, with harmful consequences on both physical health and
well-being. Yet, age-specific trends and risk patterns remain understudied. This study used mixed methods, surveys, and
interviews to explore injury prevalence, risk factors, and lived experiences across developmental stages. PURPOSE: To
investigate the prevalence and risk of overuse injuries in youth softball athletes. The study emphasized trends by age and
playing history among adolescent athletes. METHODS: In this IRB-approved study (#2115411-6), softball athletes ages 8-
16 were grouped into three cohorts (8-10, 11-13, 14-16). A total of 14 athletes completed in-person surveys at …

Association Between Pelvic Tilt And Lower Extremity Range Of Motion In Division I Student-Athletes, David Wang, Admar Calovini, Jake Finkelstein, Lia Karas, Roger Gerland, Katie Sell, Jamie Ghigiarelli, Ofra Pottorf May 2025

Association Between Pelvic Tilt And Lower Extremity Range Of Motion In Division I Student-Athletes, David Wang, Admar Calovini, Jake Finkelstein, Lia Karas, Roger Gerland, Katie Sell, Jamie Ghigiarelli, Ofra Pottorf

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Pelvic alignment has a critical role in maintaining efficient biomechanics during athletic performance. Alterations in pelvic tilt (PT) can influence force distribution through the lower extremity kinetic chain, potentially increasing injury risk. Limited joint range of motion (ROM) may contribute to compensatory pelvic positioning and stability deficits. Understanding the interconnectivity between PT and lower extremity ROM may offer insight into movement patterns and potential injury risk. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between PT and ROM for right and left ankle dorsiflexion (ADF-R and ADF-L, respectively), hip internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER), …
