Differential Cardiovascular Responses To Acute Exercise In Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Gustavo Aldama, Allison Bui, Areum K. Jensen Nov 2021

Differential Cardiovascular Responses To Acute Exercise In Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Gustavo Aldama, Allison Bui, Areum K. Jensen

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive and permanent neurological disorder leading to musculoskeletal dysfunction and immobility. A major clinical problem with CP is early development of cardiovascular diseases with increased rates of mortality. Due to the inevitability of motor dysfunction adults with CP can develop health risk factors, such as obesity and hypertension, at a higher rate compared to the general population. To date, the physiological basis for CP has not been established; how cardiovascular dynamics, such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and blood flow (BF), are controlled in individuals with CP has never been identified. PURPOSE: To …

Self-Generated Lower Body Negative Pressure As A No-Power Countermeasure For Deep Space, Suhas Rao Velichala, Ryan Kassel, Alan Hargens, Victoria Ly

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

The absence of gravitational forces experienced during spaceflight produces headward fluid shifts which probably cause Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS). In order to counteract these fluid shifts and prevent SANS, especially when power is limited and a human centrifuge is unavailable, other strategies are needed. One possible strategy is the use of self-generated, lower body negative pressure (LBNP) which meets the low power and safety requirements of deep-space missions. PURPOSE: In this study we explored acute physiologic responses to self-generated LBNP in a horizontal model of simulated microgravity. METHODS: Participants of the study were tested during static 25 mmHg …

The Effects Of Exercise On Hunger And Satiety Hormone Concentrations Over A 36-Hour Fast: A Randomized Crossover Study, Jacob L. Coleman, Landon Deru, Hunter Chamberlain, Bruce W. Bailey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Background: Feelings of hunger and satiation are known to be influenced physiologically through hormone secretion. Ghrelin (GH) is known as the primary “hunger” hormone, and GLP-1, PP, PYY, and C-Peptide (CP) are hormones known to signal feelings of satiety. The aim of this study was to assess hunger and satiety hormone production during a prolonged fast, and to evaluate how an initial bout of exercise influences this secretion. Subjective feelings of mood and hunger were also assessed throughout.

Methods: In this crossover study, 20 adult subjects (11 Male, 9 Female) completed two 36-hour fasts, with one protocol requiring the subject …

The Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Over Multiple Days On Shooting Performance In Elite Deaflympic Athletes: A Case Series, Nicholas Pudar, Milan Pantovic, Sheniz Mooney, Brach Poston

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method that has shown the ability to enhance motor learning in numerous studies. However, only a few of these studies have been conducted on elite level performers or in complex motor tasks that have been practiced extensively. Rifle shooting is a difficult motor task that has real-world implications in military, police, and sport settings. Although a few studies have investigated the influence of tDCS on shooting performance, these were all acute studies conducted on novice performers. The PURPOSE was to determine the effects of DLPFC-tDCS on motor learning over multiple days …

The Impact Of Faith Community Nursing Programs For Chronic Disease Screening And Management In Vulnerable Populations: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Gabri Warren

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Faith Community Nursing (FCN) programs in the United States (U.S.) emerged in the 1980's; however, the intertwining of health promotion in religious institutions has been present for millennia. Today, challenges facing healthcare are prompting health care providers to find creative and cost-effective methods of providing care. Determining whether FCN positively impacts the health of individuals with limited access to healthcare services would encourage healthcare providers to collaborate with the specialty, reinforcing the benefit of their service. An integrative literature review was conducted to identify studies measuring the impact of FCN on the health outcomes of individuals with hypertension (Baig, Mangione, …

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues for nearly two years, communities of faith are struggling to meet the spiritual needs of individuals, congregants, and communities during a particularly trying time in history. They have experienced closures, phased re-openings, and reinstated restrictions as the pandemic sees the fourth surge and a deadly more transmissible form of COVID in the Delta Variant. Faith Community Nurses, who are specially educated to provide intentional care of the spirit, play a pivotal role in providing care, support, and education to maintain and improve whole person health when people are isolated, physically distant, and at times critically …

Practice Matters: Adult Vaccination Recommendations, Kara S. Haughtigan, Elizabeth A. Groves Oct 2021

Practice Matters: Adult Vaccination Recommendations, Kara S. Haughtigan, Elizabeth A. Groves

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Vaccinations provide protection from serious illness, long term complications, or death from vaccine-preventable infectious diseases throughout the lifespan. Vaccinations are a safe and effective primary prevention strategy to improve individual and community health. With many immunizations scheduled during childhood, adult vaccination needs for individuals over the age of 18 may be overlooked. Pre-existing health conditions, travel, and personal lifestyle, along with decreasing childhood immunization protections, can leave adults vulnerable to many vaccine-preventable diseases. The onset of the global 2019 coronavirus pandemic, along with vaccination disparities, anti-vaccination ideals, and mistrust, has highlighted the need for open discussion and public education regarding …
