The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine Aug 1973

The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The nitrate ion specific electrode has been used to measure nitrate concentration in plant tissue. Nitrate concentration, as nitrate ion activity, can be read rather simply in an aqueous extract of the plant tissue in somewhat the sane manner as a pH measurement would be taken, In contract to more time consuming chemical methods.

A previous study of nitrate concentrations in barley treated with the growth retardant chemical, B-Nine (succinic acid 2, 2 dimethylhydrazide), had been carried out by the colorimetric method of Wooley, Hicks and Hageman. The study indicated lower nitrate concentrations in treated plants, as compared with untreated …

Electron Transfer Rate Between Cobalt(Ii)-Cobalt(Iii) Polypyridyl Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents, William Prow Aug 1973

Electron Transfer Rate Between Cobalt(Ii)-Cobalt(Iii) Polypyridyl Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents, William Prow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Numerous studies have been made in recent years on electron transfer reactions of transition metal complexes which proceed by either an inner- or an outer-sphere mechanism. However, except for the Fe(II)/ Fe(III) isotopic electron exchange system, few of the studies have been conducted in other than aqueous media. This study was undertaken to examine solvent effects on redox reactions of transition metal complexes which proceed by an outer-sphere mechanism.

During this study, the electron exchange rate between the bis(2,2',2"-tripyridyl)cobalt(II) complex and the tris(2,2'-dipyridyl) cobalt(III) complex was measured in a number of nonaqueous solvents. Rate measurements were made at three or …

The Protestant Ethic Effect: A Multiple Dependent Variable Analysis, Ronald Stephens Aug 1973

The Protestant Ethic Effect: A Multiple Dependent Variable Analysis, Ronald Stephens

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

When an organism is allowed to choose "between working for food or receiving "free" food, what will its decision "be? For years such a question would have been addressed within the framework proposed by Clark Hull (1943): the organism would choose the alternative requiring the least amount of effort and eat the free food. However, several recent investigations have cast doubt on the generality of this lav: of least effort. Typically these studies have involved training organisms to respond for a reinforcer, defined as a stimulus that increases the probability of a response (Hilgard ?z Bower, 1966), and subsequently allowing …

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Separation Of Copper (Ii) And Silver (I) By Differential Rates Of Extraction & Extraction Rate Studies Of Copper(Ii), Jon Hines Aug 1973

Separation Of Copper (Ii) And Silver (I) By Differential Rates Of Extraction & Extraction Rate Studies Of Copper(Ii), Jon Hines

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It was the purpose of this work to study the extraction of Cu(II) and Ag(I) with dithizone in chloroform. This particular pair of elements was chosen for study for several reasons. The most prominent of these reasons is that these two elements are found together in nature and are often found combined in manufactured products. Being in the same periodic group, they exhibit similar chemical characteristics making them difficult to separate without special procedures. These similar chemical characteristics make the analysis of these elements difficult when in the presence of each other. Finally, it is of importance that both elements …

Jacques Maritain: Reflections On Different Kinds Of Knoweldge, Calvin Gelderloss

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The primary interest in this work is to examine Maritain's solution to this problem in philosophy, and to examine it as it applies to the various kinds of knowledge. Thus, this position will be examined in connection with knowledge in general, or in connection with what might be called common sense knowledge. We will also examine the kinds of knowledge which are proper to the various sciences,2 both speculative and practical. Furthermore, throughout the consideration in this work of Maritain's solution, as it applies to the various kinds of knowledge to be considered, the fundamental involvement of being will be …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Stress On The Protestant Ethic Effect, April Schnur Aug 1973

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Stress On The Protestant Ethic Effect, April Schnur

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the past decade researchers have demonstrated that organisms do not always perform according to Hull's "law of less work" (Hull, 1943). In certain situations, some Ss prefer to perform an operant (e.g., bar press) rather than freeload to receive reinforcement (e.g., food). Though it can be argued that this is not behavior typical of all Ss (Taylor, 1972), lack of generality is not the point. As Metze and Craig (1973) point out, data from deviant individual Ss may prove to be the most interesting.

There are two research objectives for the present study. First, an attempt was made to …

Phenological And Cultural Studies Of Common Dandelion (Taraxacum Officinale Weber), Don Carlisle Aug 1973

Phenological And Cultural Studies Of Common Dandelion (Taraxacum Officinale Weber), Don Carlisle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Phenological and cultural studies of common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) were conducted from 1969 to 1971 at Bowling Green, Kentucky. The phenological studies were based upon dandelion plants which were found growing in a Kentucky bluegrass lawn or in open lots. At this location the dandelion flowered throughout the year. Maximum flowering occurred during April and a secondary peak occurred in September and October. The number of flowering stems per square meter was not correlated significantly with precipitation, temperature, or day length. Length of stem was positively correlated with temperature and day length. The plants exhibited diurnal variation in flowering …

The Intensity Of Ligand Absorption, Shing-Bong Chen Aug 1973

The Intensity Of Ligand Absorption, Shing-Bong Chen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ultraviolet absorption spectra of a number of aryl phosphines and amines and transition metal complexes of triphenylphosphine have been determined. These data indicate that the intensity of the Õ* ¬ Õ phenyl ring transition is not only sensitive to the central atom attached to the ring but is also affected by the metal ion in the complex. Since the degree of covalency depends on the degree of back donation, the oxidation state of the metal ion was found to be the most important factor in determining the intensity of the absorption. The more covalent the metal-phosphine bond, the lower …

Intercultural Influences In Early Peruvian Ceramic Design And Decoration, Clinton Pace Aug 1973

Intercultural Influences In Early Peruvian Ceramic Design And Decoration, Clinton Pace

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

About eleven thousand years ago the earliest known human inhabitants of the Central Andean area began a lifestyle which developed into some of the richest cultures of the ancient American civilizations. The people living in this thirteen-hundred-mile arid mountain zone, which is now the nation of Peru, produced some of the most outstanding examples of ceramics in the world before the birth of Christ.

The purpose of this study was to examine representative examples from various early Peruvian cultures in an attempt to identify their characteristics and to determine the extent to which the pottery forms of certain early cultures …

The Effects Of Developmental Groups On Personality Factors, Larry Sensing Jul 1973

The Effects Of Developmental Groups On Personality Factors, Larry Sensing

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Because of the attempt by our culture to deal with isolation and alienation in contemporary life, the small group process has become a significant force in many parts of American society. It has been known under many names: encounter group, T-group, sensitivity group and developmental group. Since this phenomenon generally grew outside of the "establishment," those scholars and behavioral scientists who have in the past been charged with the evaluation of such practices only recently have begun to explore its effects. Perhaps because the group process was not first explored intensively in an academic setting, colleges have been among the …
