Alterations In Exercise Capacity In Mice With St8sia2-Dependent Long Polysialic Acid Chains, Brad H. Parks, Ellen C. Breen

St8Sia2 gene overexpression in mice simulates a human-like mutation which occurred through the process of evolution more than 100,000 years ago. This mutation results in longer polysialic acid chains on the surface of cells. Polysialic acid chains play a role in cell-cell signaling, particularly in the hippocampus, due to the ability to bind to growth factors including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2). Exercise is a well-known stimulus in increasing hippocampal neurogenesis through BDNF. Thalassemia (Thal) is a disease that reduces the body's ability to produce hemoglobin. Without a sufficient amount of hemoglobin, individuals with Thal experience extreme fatigue and anemia. These physical imitations raise questions about the reliability of the vertical jump test with a Thal population. Purpose: To determine if the vertical jump test can produce repeatable results in a Thal population.

Optimal physical performance in military personnel is influenced by both lifestyle behaviors and physiological attributes. PURPOSE: To examine whether lean body mass and VO2 max mediate the relationship between healthy eating and Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) performance. METHODS: Eighty-nine ROTC cadets (age range: 18-24 years) completed assessments of healthy eating (Healthy Eating Index), VO2 max, lean body mass (kg), and ACFT scores. Covariates included age, gender, and ROTC activity level. Mediation analysis was conducted using PROCESS v5.0 in SPSS with 5,000 bootstrap samples. Weight cycling, the repeated pattern of weight loss and regain, is common among college students and may negatively impact cardiovascular health. Previous research suggests potential sex differences in physiological responses to weight fluctuations, but limited studies have examined whether gender moderates the relationship between weight cycling behaviors and cardiovascular outcomes. Super Smash Bros Ultimate (SSBU) is a prevalent but under-researched Esports title that requires efficient decision making to execute game-specific strategies. Purpose: To identify any potential differences in reaction time and impulsivity across different SSBU player skill levels. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Elbow varus torque (EVT) is used as a surrogate measure for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury risk in baseball pitching. EVT is often normalized to pitcher anthropometrics to account for body size, but it is unclear if these are appropriate. If UCL structure is not related to body size, normalizing EVT to body size may compromise its relevance to injury risk. Physiology has adapted to function on a 24 hour time scale, referred to as the circadian rhythm. Operating outside of this time scale leads to circadian rhythm disruption, which invariably leads to pathological outcomes. Social jetlag (SJL), a common form of circadian rhythm disruption, occurs when an individual’s sleep/wake schedule differs throughout the week (i.e. – staying up late on the weekends), and has been associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute sleep reduction on heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate recovery (HRR) following aerobic exercise. Gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi) is measured in occupational settings to monitor heat stress, but Tgi telemetric pill sensors are often ingested without sufficient time to exit the stomach, increasing the likelihood of errors and thereby necessitating data cleaning. Caffeine is a stimulant widely used by workers in labor-intensive occupations to enhance mood and concentration. Previous research shows that caffeine has a diuretic effect and may increase heat production during activity in the heat, potentially contributing to dehydration and hyperthermia. Cold water exposure during surfing can induce cold stress which can potentially impact comfort and performance. Neoprene booties have been marketed to mitigate cold stress within the feet, but there is limited information regarding their effectiveness PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to characterize dorsal and plantar foot skin temperatures between two bootie models (strapped vs. strapless) during sixty minutes of recreational surfing in cold water. BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA), derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis, reflects cellular health and membrane integrity. It is influenced by muscle mass, hydration, and cell membrane function, making it particularly relevant for assessing physiological status in older adults.

Neuromuscular deficits observed through electromyography (EMG) of individual muscles are common in rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathy. However, given that muscles act in coordination, muscle synergy analyses can identify altered neuromuscular patterns that can inform specific interventions to address these deficits.

PURPOSE: Characterize shoulder muscle synergies in RC tendinopathy.
