The Development Of An Expressive Language Scoring System, Pamela Tamme
The Development Of An Expressive Language Scoring System, Pamela Tamme
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was designed to develop an expressive language scoring system so that the creative quality of a person's written language could be quantified and measured. Sixty fifth -grade students, 31 males and 29 females, were given the opening line, i.e., story-starter, to a story and were asked to finish the stories. Each student received two story-starters concerning the same object ("content")-- either box, string or money--but were different in "context" (usual or unusual setting). Thus, a total of 120 stories were written, with 40 stories being from each content group. These stories were then rated according to their level …

Confederate Operations In Eastern Kentucky, 1861-1862, C. David Dalton
Confederate Operations In Eastern Kentucky, 1861-1862, C. David Dalton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
As a border state, Kentucky occupied a unique position in the early days of the Civil War. Her neutral stance was observed by the belligerents for the first five months of the conflict, but in September 1861, troops entered the state. Confederate armies under the leadership of Brigadier Generals Humphrey Marshall and Feliz Zollicoffer sought to drive the Federal forces from eastern Kentucky. Through a series of skirmishes, however, the Southern armies were repelled and placed on the defensive. Later defeats at Logan’s Cross Roads and Middle Creek in early January 1862 cleared eastern Kentucky of Confederate forces. For the …
Husserl's Collapse Of Cartesian Dualism As A Result Of The Epoche & The Intentionality Theory Of Consciousness, David Nickell
Husserl's Collapse Of Cartesian Dualism As A Result Of The Epoche & The Intentionality Theory Of Consciousness, David Nickell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Since the time of Descartes, it has been an implicit assumption of western thought that human reality is composed of two totally distinct substances: the physical (extended) and the non-physical (non-extended). Explaining the nature of these two substances, and the relation between them, has been a central dilemma in western philosophy ever since. Edmund Husserl believed these categories are the result of latent abstraction in our way of conceiving the world and have no place in reality itself. By explicating the implications of Brentano's observation that all consciousness is consciousness of something' (the theory of intentionality) and by effecting a …
The Effects Of Extraversion On Performance On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children-Revised, Charles V. Kerekes
The Effects Of Extraversion On Performance On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children-Revised, Charles V. Kerekes
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A sample population of 139 fifth grade students, ranging in age from nine years to twelve years eleven months, was drawn from a data pool created from test results collected from four elementary schools in a south central Kentucky municipality. Tests used in the study were the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Revised (WISC-R) and Cattell’s Children’s Personality Questionnaire (CPQ).
These data were examined to determine the relationship of extraversion to performance on a standardized intelligence test.
Correlations for the experimental variables and extraversion ranged from .12 to .51.
The results indicated that extraverts had higher Performance, Verbal and …
Impact Of Urban Stormwater Runoff On The Water Quality Of The Subsurface Lost River, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Donald Rice
Impact Of Urban Stormwater Runoff On The Water Quality Of The Subsurface Lost River, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Donald Rice
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Bowling Green, Kentucky is located in a distinctive karst region, characterized by subsurface drainage. The Lost River is a large subsurface stream which flows beneath the city. It receives much of the stormwater runoff from Bowling Green, since most of the city's runoff is directed underground. Significant pollutants in Bowling Green's stormwater runoff were identified from water quality test results of storm event grab samples, and a composite sample, of runoff entering the urban By-Pass Cave. Water quality test results were also obtained from storm event grab samples, and a composite sample, of the Lost River at the Blue Hole …

The Development & Study Of A Competency-Based Vocational Education Drafting Program, Kenneth Mussnug
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this curriculum project was to develop, revise, and field test a competency based vocational drafting program which was accomplished in four phases. An existing CBVE drafting program, developed by this author, was revised prior to the field test. New modules and audio visual presentations were developed, the program was tested in two vocational programs, and the program evaluated again after the test.
Twelve modules were revised and one new module developed. Nine new slide tape presentations were developed to supplement the modules and existing slide tapes.

The Brigance K&1 Screen And Corresponding Teacher Ratings Of Students, Shanna Waddington
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The relationship between teacher ratings of kindergarten students and scores on the Brigance K&1 Screen was examined in order to obtain a measure of construct validity for the Brigance. A Kentucky sample and California sample were included in the study. Data was analyzed separately for each sample for purposes of regional comparison. Teacher’s ratings of students’ overall ability and ability across five skill dimensions (expressive language, receptive language, personal information, fine motor skills, and gross motor skills) were compared via a linear regression analysis. The results indicated that overall ratings of students by teachers are significant and reliable combinations of …

Nonpoint Agricultural Pollution In A Karst Aquifer: Lost River Groundwater Drainage Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Nancy Tucker
Nonpoint Agricultural Pollution In A Karst Aquifer: Lost River Groundwater Drainage Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Nancy Tucker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Chemical analysis of samples collected from subsurface streams and wells were analyzed to identify nonpoint pollutants in karst aquifers resulting from agricultural land use. Major flow paths and travel times taken by nonpoint pollutants were identified. A land use limitation map showing areas where agricultural activities may results in nonpoint pollution of the karst aquifer was prepared. A groundwater susceptibility map was prepared to show areas of the karst aquifer most susceptible to groundwater contamination by nonpoint pollution resulting from agricultural land use.
Research findings revealed that pollutant concentrations may reach levels thousands of times greater during high discharge events …
Effects Of Task Complexity On Mental Imagery & Work Decrement, Mary George
Effects Of Task Complexity On Mental Imagery & Work Decrement, Mary George
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was conducted to determine the effects of task complexity on mental imagery and work decrement. A total of 180 right-handed undergraduates from Western Kentucky University were tested on the rotor pursuit apparatus. Task complexity was manipulated by eccentricity on the tracking target of the rotor pursuit (i.e., the more eccentric, the more complex). Three shapes of increasing eccentricity were used, and there were three practice conditions: rest, no-rest and control. Thus, nine treatment conditions existed. The rest group had a 5-min rest between practice and performance, the no-rest group went right from practice to performance without rest, and …
The Duke Of Dark Corners: Toward An Interpretation Of Measure For Measure's Duke Vincento, Jan Funk
The Duke Of Dark Corners: Toward An Interpretation Of Measure For Measure's Duke Vincento, Jan Funk
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The multiple and widely varying interpretations of Duke Vincentio in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure can be reconciled and made into a consistent interpretation by the application of a framework consisting of both literary and Elizabethan conventions as well as a view of comedy that accepts the comic function of movement toward identity as comedy's goal. Duke Vincentio is the comic drive in the play. His behavioral motives are based on his sincere concern for his constituency and his courageous use of his power during a time when reform is vital. The morally equivocal means he sometimes employs are justified by …
