Exploring Stress Mindset And Perceived Stress Between College Student-Athletes And Non-Athletes, Creighton Avery, Amber M. Shipherd, Sarah Gomez, Kelly B. Renner
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 1554-1562, 2022. One’s beliefs about the nature of stress (e.g., stress mindset) play a large role in the extent to which one experiences the detrimental or beneficial outcomes of stress. Stress mindset has been explored in college students, but there is limited research on stress mindsets in student-athletes. Sport can serve as a buffer to the negative impacts of stress for some student-athletes; however, pressures associated with sport participation increase stress in other student-athletes. Therefore, the purpose was to examine potential differences in stress mindset and perceived stress between non-athletes and college student-athletes. We …

Impact Of Nusinersen Treatment On Measures Of Exercise Intolerance In Spinal Muscular Atrophy, David Uher, Ashley M. Goodwin, Darryl C. De Vivo, Jacqueline Montes, Carol Ewing Garber Facsm
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder, marked by insufficient production of SMN protein, leading to motor neuron dysfunction. Although ubiquitously produced throughout the body, motor neurons and muscle cells are selectively impacted by decreased SMN, which has been linked to impaired oxidative phosphorylation causing altered metabolic function and exercise intolerance. Nusinersen, administered directly to the central nervous (CNS), is an approved therapy that increases SMN protein in an effort to restore motor neuron function. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of treatment on markers of exercise tolerance in children and adults treated with nusinersen is not known. …

Esports have been growing faster than any other sport in history. Esports are video games that are played in official competitions and usually fall into a major genre, such as fighting games, real-time strategy, multiplayer online battle arena games, or first-person shooters (FPS). Valorant is an FPS. Advances in technology have now made a new class of information, namely biofeedback, readily available. An example of biofeedback is pupil size, which is an indirect measure of the amount of material under active processing and sympathetic/parasympathetic activity. Eye behavior is considered crucial in FPS games. Relevant research is scarce in this specific …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for prolonged periods of time is related to cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Sleep quality (SQ) can be operationally defined from components, such as sleep efficiency and sleep-onset latency. Diet is operationally defined as the quantity and quality of nutrient intake. CRF, SQ, and diet are related to all-cause mortality. During the COVID-19 health crisis, non-pharmaceutical interventions (curfews, stay-at-home orders) disrupted people’s lifestyles, including sleep, diet, and physical activity (PA). PURPOSE: To analyze MVPA, diet, and SQ trends over time and variations in changes over time during COVID-19. METHODS: PA (in mins/week), diet (via REAP-S), and SQ (via …

Older Adults With Osteoarthritis: Higher Mental Toughness Associated With Greater Improvement In Knee Pain/Functionality, Levi Sochia, Alexandra Spinou, Konstantinos G. Tsigaridis, Hiroki Matsuo, Grant Morgan, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Older adults (the least physically active of all age groups) have a high prevalence of knee pathologies, such as osteoarthritis (OA). Physical activity (PA) is essential for managing OA through its anabolic, lipolytic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Pain and functional limitations can present challenges when performing PA. Mental toughness (MT) is associated with higher success when pursuing exercise/PA goals, but little is known about its role in rehabilitation settings. MT has been primarily researched cross sectionally. MT can be developed. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between MT and knee pain/functionality via a longitudinal design in older adults with OA who underwent …

Prognostic Validity Of Professional Soccer Status By Anthropometrics And Repeated Jump Testing, Samuel R. Vilmeau, Vassilios Panoutsakopoulos, Iraklis Kollias, Zacharias Papadakis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
Soccer is characterized by intermittent high-intensity actions interspersed with lower intensity ones. Soccer clubs invest time and money to early identify and nurture potential professional players in the premise to maximize the return of their investment. Multidimensional talent identification models are proposed as best practice but are difficult to be implemented in the field. Explosive lower limbs strength assessment by vertical jumping (VJ) is used as a single predictor for future player status. Alternative to VJ, the repeated vertical jump test (RVJ) has been proposed, but its prognostic ability is still unexplored. PURPOSE: To analyze the prognostic validity …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
According to the ACSM, lifestyle medicine (LM) is in the top 20 worldwide fitness trends for 2022. The LM pillars of a plant-based diet, physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, social interactions, and avoidance of risky substances have been proposed as effective strategies for preventing and treating chronic conditions. However, implementing lifestyle behavioral changes to improve noncommunicable chronic disease outcomes has still been problematic. Individuals’ mental and physical status has been suggested as a key component in closing the gap between the intention to adopt a healthy lifestyle and actually adopting that behavior. PURPOSE: To examine the associations of …

Age-Related Changes In Skeletal Muscle Oxygen Utilization: A Review, Maxwell T. Aiken, Sabrina S. Salvatore, Kyle N. Zelenski, Ryan K. Perkins
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The cardiovascular and skeletal muscle systems are intrinsically interconnected, sharing the goal of delivering oxygen to metabolically active tissue. Deficiencies within those systems that affect oxygen delivery to working tissues are a hallmark of advancing age. Oxygen delivery and utilization are reflected as muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) and may be assessed using near-infrared resonance spectroscopy (NIRS). PURPOSE: This review is intended to provide an update on the current state of literature regarding age-related effects on SmO2. Furthermore, we attempt to bridge the gap between SmO2 and associated underlying mechanisms affected by aging. FINDINGS: SmO …
