Educational Practices in Kinesiology

Peer-to-peer teaching improves academic performance. During the worldwide pandemic, peer-to-peer teaching was unavailable, and feelings of isolation and loneliness increased. This study investigated the impact of virtual peer-to-peer group study on student performance and class views in a virtual, undergraduate exercise physiology course. Sixty-nine college-aged adults were randomly assigned to study with a virtual group or individually for two instructional units. Students switched groups after the first unit. For virtual group study, students met virtually for at least one hour outside of class to study course content. Those assigned to the individual study did not study virtually with classmates. A group of faith community nurses (FCNs) in rural Oregon joined together to form the Faith Community Health Network (FCHN). They applied for and received a grant to provide care coordination services to the residents of Lebanon and the greater Linn County. This case study is used to present the FCHN’s journey from coalition to a funded non-profit during the COVID-19 pandemic and the grant, “Rebuilding the Bridge Between Healthcare and Faith Communities” they received from the Intercommunity Health Network Coordinated Care Organization. This article describes the impact that the Covid pandemic of 2020/2021 had on the work of UK Parish Nurses and the churches with which they worked. It explains how they adapted to the restrictions imposed by the government, changing the nature of the interventions they were able to make. It concludes that the resilience, flexibility, and creativity of the Parish nurses and of their national umbrella organisation, Parish Nursing Ministries UK, have enabled the emergence of a growing and vibrant ministry.

Parish nurses, faith community nurses, and congregational nurses found their practice frequently adapting to comply with government issued restrictions and the changing needs of the community. QueensCare Health & Faith Partnership (QHFP), a parish nurse program which is part of QueensCare, a non-profit public benefit corporation, and St. Dominic Catholic Church in Los Angeles, California designed a replicable model for safely reopening parish nurse sites. There is a clinical need to quantify return to play when assessing athletes’ post-surgery. This study aims at developing physiological models to predict recovery time post-Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery in Division 1 Football players by integration of physiological and subjective data. PURPOSE Amidst the pressure to excel in top athletic competitions, athletes frequently endure ligamentous injuries, notably ACL tears. Face masks reduce the spread of viral respiratory particles, however, their impact on respiratory physiology requires further research. Previous studies reported negative changes in gas exchange data when wearing a surgical mask, however, breath-by-breath data has not been analyzed. PURPOSE: To compare physiological changes when wearing an N95 mask and surgical mask at rest. Variables measured include oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide ventilation (VC02), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (MV), and discomfort. Muscle power declines at a faster rate and demonstrates a stronger association with physical function than strength, emphasizing the growing importance of assessing muscle power. The Sit-to-Stand (STS) test is a novel test to measure lower body power that is valid and reliable, while also being portable and affordable. History: An active 78-year-old male, with a background as a recreational athlete, presented with acute onset of left foot pain, following an event of mechanical stress characterized by a popping sensation. His extensive medical history included interventions for systemic and musculoskeletal disorders, notably a carotid artery dissection and hip arthroplasty. Lifestyle factors included past smoking and minimal alcohol use. He reported a recent corticosteroid intervention of his left mid-foot for chronic discomfort.

CASE HISTORY: A 13-year-old male lacrosse athlete presented with gradual onset right ankle pain. Symptoms began at age ten, including multiple ankle sprains. The physician suspected plantar fasciitis and advised gel inserts, NSAID pain relievers, and physical therapy to no avail. The pain persisted as sports became more demanding. His performance continued to decrease, and gait became labored and disjointed, with an occasional limp. PURPOSE: Test whether a novel strategy for very fast eccentric chest press will induce higher exercise-induced muscle damage than slow eccentric chest press. In pursuit of sustained fat loss, intrinsic motivation plays a pivotal role. This study explores the impact of 4 weeks of intrinsic motivation coaching (IMC) on fat loss, following up 10 weeks later. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate whether IMC strategies during a fat-loss intervention improves sustained fat loss thereafter. Falls affect approximately 1 in 3 older adults each year [1], with recurrent fallers displaying reduced postural stability [2] and lower limb strength [3]. While it is known that low-intensity exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) improves strength [4], it is unknown whether benefits extend to postural stability. In pursuit of sustained fat loss, intrinsic motivation plays a pivotal role. This study explores the impact of 4-weeks of intrinsic motivation coaching (IMC) on fat loss, following up 10 weeks later. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate whether IMC strategies during a fat-loss intervention improves sustained fat loss thereafter. METHODS: Participants (IMC: n=7, CON: n=6) had their body composition assessed using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis at weeks 1, 4, and 14. Cohesion, the degree of teamwork combined with interpersonal attraction, is a critical determinant of team stability, effectiveness, and individual satisfaction. This multifaceted construct bridges the psychological and tactical aspects of team organization, influencing both team and individual performance.
