The Relationship Of Postsecondary Outcomes For Students With Disabilities In Kentucky Schools, Stephanie Dawn Cornwell
The Relationship Of Postsecondary Outcomes For Students With Disabilities In Kentucky Schools, Stephanie Dawn Cornwell
Dissertations
In order to compare the postsecondary success rates of students with disabilities in rural areas to those in urban areas in Kentucky, data were accessed from the Kentucky Postsecondary Outcome Study, a longitudinal study created to monitor the employment and education status of students with disabilities during their final year of high school and one year after exiting high school. U.S. Census data were also utilized to determine various demographic information and rural or urban classification of selected areas. Results show that the geographic classification as rural and suburban has a strong relationship with the postsecondary outcome for students with …

Dare To Care: Teaching Leadership To Gifted Students, Sarah E. Fox
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This thesis details the creation and execution of the class “Dare to Care: Teaching Leadership to Gifted Students,” which was offered through a Saturday enrichment program to gifted middle school students. The class combined the study of leadership skills with the idea of being a change agent—a leader who uses his or her abilities to make a positive difference. This thesis documents the lesson plans of the class and students’ reactions to each lesson.

Public School Science Education And Geographically-Specific Environmental Sustainability Issues: Implications For Social Work Education, Amanda Gallion
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The focus of this project was to examine the educational practices of Kentucky-based public school teachers (grades 4th-8th) related to their efforts to incorporate sustainability into the science classroom and specifically related to the teachers’ focus or lack of focus on karst landscape. The major themes that were analyzed were how educators include this content into their classroom material and how this impacts their students in the area of environmental sustainability. The themes analyzed were: environmental sustainability as a lifestyle choice; education about environmental sustainability, the nexus of family, school, and community; the importance of geographical context in regards to …

Landscape Genetics Of The Endangered California Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Californiense) In The Los Vaqueros Watershed, Ryan Neal Vincent
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Genetic diversity is essential for maintaining healthy biological systems, and dispersal-mediated gene flow increases genetic diversity by introducing new alleles to a gene pool. Populations that frequently experience gene flow will show characteristic similarities in allele frequencies. Measuring genetic diversity among many populations across a landscape has proven to be a powerful approach for assessing the ways that habitat discontinuities may affect patterns of gene flow, and in turn, influence allele frequencies and population dynamics. This study examines the landscape-level population genetic structure of the California tiger salamander, Ambystoma californiense, within the Los Vaqueros Watershed of Contra Costa County, …
Factors Involved In Early Age Dental Visits, Lillian Brooke Mcneal
Factors Involved In Early Age Dental Visits, Lillian Brooke Mcneal
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Today, more children are diagnosed with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) than at any other time in modern history. It is noted that Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is now the most common infectious disease among children and occurs 5 times more than asthma (America Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, 2014). Considering the extent of this disease, it is imperative to determine the cause of it and factors involved in the control.
In order to begin this study, one must first analyze different patients and their living conditions, along with the frequency of dental visits and when the first dental visit occurred. What …

Hookah: A Fun Fad Or Harmful Habit?, Amy Gee Broadrick
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Hookah smoking has been a well-known activity in the Middle East for hundreds of years. More recently, hookah has become a worldwide phenomenon, especially in the United States of America. It is important to know why people choose this habit, and specifically why teenagers and young adults are becoming the main frequent users.
An interview session consisting of a questionnaire was the methodology used in this study. This session involved a total of twenty individuals. Ten of these individuals were people who actively participated in smoking hookah. The other ten subjects were individuals who do not engage in hookah smoking. …

Functional And Expression Analysis Of A Novel Basement Membrane Degrader In Drosophila Melanogaster, Christopher J. Fields
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
SNUTS is a protein coding gene present in Drosophila melanogaster whose product contains conserved domains that are present in a range of eukaryotic organisms. The SNUTS protein is made up of four domains, two Sterile Alpha Motif (SAM) domain, and two Plant Homeodomains (PHD). The biological function of SNUTS or the various domains is largely unknown. One study demonstrated that SNUTS was important for proper development of the stem cell niche. In the present study data from both overexpression and downregulation of Snuts and the resulting phenotypes are presented. Data supporting potential mechanisms resulting in the phenotype are also presented. …

Despite efforts to improve oral health, untreated childhood tooth decay continues to be a major concern in the state of Kentucky. It is said that an estimated 42.8 percent of children in Kentucky suffer from early childhood caries (ECC) before the age of five and 39.3 percent of these children have never been in a dental office (The Kentucky Oral Health Summit). Another study conducted revealed that approximately 20 percent of preschoolers, 50 percent of second graders and 75 percent of 15 years olds are affected by untreated tooth decay (Kentucky’s Dental Access Summit, 2013). What are the major issues …

Beyond Sustainability: A New Conceptual Model, Molly Kerby, Gayle Mallinger
Beyond Sustainability: A New Conceptual Model, Molly Kerby, Gayle Mallinger
Gender & Women's Studies Faculty Publications
Over the last few decades, the notion of sustainability has become an interdisciplinary buzz word. Sustainability has been an integrative concept that includes three constructs or pillars: a) social; b) economic; and c) ecological. Until recently, theoretical approaches based on the three pillars approach have operated in silos rather than exploring the interconnectedness of the constructs. Few models have moved beyond the idea that logical relations exist among the constructs (social, economic, and ecological) to consider factors external to communities, nor have they examined the internal socio-economic factors that influence positive outcomes. While this conceptualization has raised awareness about the …
