Transcendence: An Elegy To Transgenerational Systematic Adaptation, Nicholas Struck
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When major tragedy occurs, it tends to strike grief in the minds and hearts of people throughout the world. When we engage in conversation about our individual vulnerabilities, we discover a realistic, but often beautiful mundaneness to life that is often lost. Channeling the mundane into art and community helps us to better understand the nuances of humanity. This gives the opportunity for us to connect through storytelling— using narrative as an outlet to express our feelings of grief, hope, and sacrifice. This project is a devised performance piece that explores how tragedy affects community, how people respond to major …

“One thing life has taught me: if you are interested, you never have to look for new interests. They come to you. They will gravitate as automatically as the needle to the north. Somehow, it is unnecessary, in any cold-blooded sense, to sit down and put your head in your hands and plan them. All you need to do is to be curious, receptive, eager for experience. And there’s one strange thing: when you are genuinely interested in one thing, it will always lead to something else.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt, You Learn by Living The power that is wielded when …
Communication Goals Of American Universities: A Social Media Content Analysis, Travis Ryan
Communication Goals Of American Universities: A Social Media Content Analysis, Travis Ryan
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Social media is a key communication tool for American universities. This research project is an exploratory look at how universities communicate with stakeholders via social media. In particular, the primary purpose is to explore potential emphasis on academic programs relative to the promotion of athletics as a marketing tool to bolster identity and recruit students. 3000 tweets were collected from 130 NCAA Division 1 American universities. In total, roughly 500,000 tweets have been scraped and classified using an automated script to assess tweet content. Particular emphasis was given to the concept of university rebranding as a broader marketing strategy for …
Storytelling In Contemporary Ballet, Abbey Lutts
Storytelling In Contemporary Ballet, Abbey Lutts
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The goal of my thesis is to challenge the conventions of classical ballet and fully grasp storytelling within contemporary ballet in a way that appeals to modern audiences. I used postpositivist research, historiography, and dance ethnography as modes of research to uncover common themes and trends of traditional ballet, which led to a deeper understanding of contemporary ballet and the modes choreographers and educators use to challenge classical ballet stereotypes. My methodology was to identify common themes from folklore, classical ballet, and traditional storytelling. I have studied traditional folklore and fairytales and have evaluated and reviewed the thematic content of …
The Picnic: Fancy Farm's Homecoming, Elijah Smith
The Picnic: Fancy Farm's Homecoming, Elijah Smith
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The bond of community and the sense of a home are essential to the essence of the human soul. In my documnentary, “The Picnic: Fancy Farm’s Homecoming,” I look to capure that feeling in the community of Fancy Farm, Ky during their biggest fundraising event of the year, the Fancy Farm Picnic. However, there is more to just fundraising when it comes to the Fancy Farm Picnic, there’s also politics, BBQ, and a true feeling of homecoming that is unique to the community of Fancy Farm. The following thesis will double as a production book which is common for the …
She's The Jazz: An Exploration Of Dance And Society In The Age Of The Flapper, Jillian Terry
She's The Jazz: An Exploration Of Dance And Society In The Age Of The Flapper, Jillian Terry
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The 1920’s, most affectionately known as “The Roaring Twenties,” was a time of dramatic social and political change. Economic growth pushed Americans into an unfamiliar consumer society where people bought the same goods, heard the same songs, danced the same dances, and used the same slang. Prohibition laws led to the underground sale of alcohol in speakeasies where new freedoms were found through communities uniting in music and dance. Here we saw the emergence of flappers. Unlike the generations that came before, these women were seen performing unladylike actions, such as drinking and smoking, while embracing their sexuality. While not …

Dancers Exhibit Different Organizations Of Muscular Effort In The Dominant Versus Non-Dominant Limb During The Impact Phase Of The Grand Jeté, Brandon Nunley, Ryan Lanier, Isabella Gonzales, Tanya Calamoneri, Ali Duffy, John Robert Harry
Dancers Exhibit Different Organizations Of Muscular Effort In The Dominant Versus Non-Dominant Limb During The Impact Phase Of The Grand Jeté, Brandon Nunley, Ryan Lanier, Isabella Gonzales, Tanya Calamoneri, Ali Duffy, John Robert Harry
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Overuse musculoskeletal injuries of the hip, knee, and ankle are prevalent in dancers. Differences in muscular effort between the dominant and non-dominant limbs may increase musculoskeletal injury risk during dance movements involving a jump followed by a high-impact unilateral landing. PURPOSE: To investigate potential differences in lower extremity muscular effort (i.e., joint angular work) between the dominant and non-dominant limbs during the landing phase of a grand jeté movement in dancers. METHODS: Collegiate dancers consisting of eight women (19 ± 1 y; 54.7 ± 6.9 kg; 1.7 ± 0.1 m) and two men (21 ± 1 y; 70.6 …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(3): 173-186, 2019. Specialist police are required to perform high risk and dangerous tasks that are physically demanding. The aims of this study were to establish the natures and contexts of tasks performed by specialist police officers and to explore the physical fitness regimes they undertake to maintain their operational fitness for these tasks. A survey approach was employed and members of operational units of the Australian and New Zealand Police Tactical Groups (PTG) participated in the survey. A total of nine (100%) PTG units cooperated, with 132 respondents (31% of the PTG operational members) …
