Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 38. Alfred Russel Wallace's "Revolt Of Democracy": A Critical Analysis Of Early 20th Century Labor Theory And Its Contemporary Relevance, James Williams, Charles H. Smith Editor
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
This article examines Alfred Russel Wallace’s political treatise The Revolt of Democracy (1913), analyzing his theoretical framework for addressing labor unrest and economic inequality in early 20th-century Britain. Wallace's work presents a comprehensive critique of competitive capitalism and proposes systematic government intervention to address structural poverty. Through close textual analysis and comparison with contemporary UK labor conditions, this study evaluates the enduring relevance of Wallace's economic theories and policy prescriptions. The analysis reveals significant continuities between early 20th-century and contemporary debates about living wages, government employment standards, and wealth redistribution, while highlighting both the prescience and limitations of Wallace’s analytical …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(7): 971-983, 2025. The total work completed during an exercise session is often assumed to be the primary factor influencing the kinetics of post-exercise recovery. However, the duration of work and rest periods during high intensity interval training (HIIT) have been shown to impact the magnitude of physiological stress and could also impact post-exercise recovery. The aim of this study was to characterize the recovery time course of neuromuscular function following work-to-rest matched HIIT protocols with different work interval durations and conducted to task failure. Participants (n=12, n=6 females) completed a ramp incremental exercise test …

Linking Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes Into Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Iron(Ii) And Zinc(Ii), Taofeek Mayowa Ogungbade
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Renewable energy has attracted significant interest in recent years as society seeks to minimize its dependence on fossil fuels. Among the various strategies proposed to achieve this goal, one promising approach is the conversion of carbon dioxide into organic fuels using photocatalysts. Unlike traditional semiconductor photocatalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer advantages such as absorption of visible light, tunable structures, and uniform pore sizes, which enhance their efficiency in the photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide.
In this thesis, we report the synthesis, structure, and properties of two novel heteronuclear MOFs that incorporate ruthenium(II) complexes and 3d-block transition metals using 2,2’-bipyridine-5,5’-dicarboxylic acid …
Competence To Stand Trial And Criminal Responsibility: The Effect Of Pretrial Publicity On Insanity Verdicts, Hannah Hennessey
Competence To Stand Trial And Criminal Responsibility: The Effect Of Pretrial Publicity On Insanity Verdicts, Hannah Hennessey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Despite the legal distinction between competence to stand trial (CST) and criminal responsibility (CR), the potential for jurors to conflate these constructs due to pretrial publicity (PTP) remains an under-examined issue in forensic psychology research. Therefore, the current study investigated whether exposure to PTP about a defendant’s CST influences jurors’ CR verdicts. A national sample of jury-eligible adults (N = 598) was recruited through Prolific. Participants were randomly assigned to read one of three mock PTP news articles: (1) the defendant was CST, (2) the defendant was previously found incompetent to stand trial (IST) but was later restored to competency, …

Aging Is Not All Doom And Gloom: How Do Beliefs About Aging Moderate The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Ageism Attitudes?, Kristen Schwindt Edmondson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of the study is to examine how young adults’ beliefs about aging moderate the effects of mortality salience on their ageism attitudes. Past research suggests that ageism is, in part, due to the presence of elderly people reminding people of their own aging process and mortality (Martens et al., 2004). Little is known, however, about how individuals’ beliefs about aging may moderate the impact of mortality salience on their attitudes toward aging. Some people tend to perceive aging-related changes as relatively fixed (i.e., essentialist belief), whereas others perceive them as relatively malleable (nonessentialist belief). Students are identified as gifted and talented based on their abilities, including both academic and creative strengths. This study examined whether teachers foster creativity in their classroom, their perceptions of creativity, and how they incorporate creativity in their classroom. Using a mixed methods convergent parallel design, teachers at a K-8 school in the southeastern United States responded to questions about how they define creativity, how they incorporate creativity into the classroom, and their teaching practices, using the 45-item Creative Fostering Teaching Behaviour Index (CFTIndex). The study found that teachers implement practices in their classrooms that promote creativity, though there are …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
School psychologists face increasing professional demands due to rising caseloads, paperwork requirements, and staffing shortages, which contribute to elevated levels of occupational stress. Although prior research has examined job-related stress within the profession, little attention has been given to how these stressors may impact practitioners’ personal and home lives. The purpose of this study was to examine how occupational stress experienced by school psychologists relates to stress experienced in their home lives. A total of 176 practicing school psychologists from across the United States completed an anonymous online survey, which included the School Psychologist Distress Inventory (SPDI) and a newly …

Mechanochemical Investigation Of The Solid-State Reduction Of Metal Oxide Species, Trevor Webster
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Redox reactions are commonly performed in aqueous solutions. Mechanochemistry offers an alternative route to conduct these reactions in the absence of a solvent. The current research project investigates the feasibility of performing solid-state redox reactions using mechanochemistry as a means to initiate. Utilizing a Wig-L-Bug, sodium metavanadate and vanadium(V) oxide are milled with various inorganic and organic reducing agents. Zn, Mg, Na2SO3, ascorbic acid, and benzoic acid were selected due to the agents’ high reduction potential and ability to reduce vanadium(V) species in acidic or basic solutions. The use of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning …
