To change the world is a growing desire among many of today’s student populations, portrayed increasingly across the spectrum of media, social trends and career pursuits. While the demand grows among students for community-oriented and socially-responsible opportunities, the offerings in educational institutions must respond to these emerging requests with new and innovative academic programs. This text emphasizes the role of the developing discipline of service-learning in channeling these energies and providing students with deep and meaningful academic experiences. This project focuses on the Hispanic community in LaGrange, KY. It is a community-based research project, which includes participants in as many steps of the project as possible. The Hypothesis was that the skills and knowledge-bases of the community can be used to alleviate the issues they face. An Asset-based survey was used to acquire a quantitative analysis of the skills that exist in Hispanic population of LaGrange. The asset-based survey asked participants to answer anonymous questions about their job experience, skills, and passions. The World Health Organization (WHO) implemented the Millennium Declaration in 2000 to establish global health goals to be achieved by 2015. Two of these Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) are directly related to maternal, neonatal and child health. Healthcare during the prenatal period can help achieve the WHO MDG’s for maternal health and child mortality. Evidence has shown that women in Kenya have limited access to prenatal care. This study focused on the prenatal care and postnatal outcome trends of the women in Kasigau, Kenya.
